Marine industry, including offshore industry, is one of the most internationalised and global business branches in the Finnish economy. The Finnish marine industry bounds together a strong network of middle and small size companies, universities and research institutes, enabling holistic approach to customer needs and even disruptive technology development.

One example of the innovative nature of Finnish marine industry is autonomous maritime eco-system programme, launched in September 2016. The aim is to provide world’s first unmanned maritime products, services and vivid ecosystem by 2025 – including testing of autonomous vessels in harsh conditions. Finnish industry – both marine technology and ICT companies – and the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation, Tekes, have joined their forces for this challenging target. The program is an excellent development and test platform for new technology that will find its applications in the offshore industry.

In the offshore sector Finnish companies have already been involved since the early days of the North Sea economic development. Nowadays our offshore companies are in the vanguard of developing solutions to the extreme conditions

of the Arctic Oceans. In terms of the natural environment, the Arctic region is one of the purest and best preserved in the world. This is very significant from Finland’s perspective, and we seek to lead the way in the sustainable development of the region.

Year 2017 will be the centennial of Finland’s independence, as Finland became an independent state on 6 December 1917. One hundred year later we will take over the two-year chairmanships of the Arctic Council and Arctic Economic Council. The proposed themes of the programme for Finland’s chairmanship of the Arctic Council include addressing the climate change in the Arctic, wellbeing in arctic communities, and meteorological cooperation. These both chairmanships give a great opportunity for our industry, especially the Arctic marine and offshore industry, to present itself and its Arctic know-how to experts taking part into different events in Finland during the chairmanships.

Finnish Offshore Industry Report 2016-2017

Examples of offshore business areas where Finnish know-how is recognized globally

Overview of the Finnish offshore industry

Finnish offshore industry – Nordic competence on a global scale

The Finnish offshore industry is an essential part of the Finnish marine industry. The key success element of Finnish companies is smart maritime technology in which we provide world-class solutions. The base of maritime competence in Finland is very strong: Finnish companies operate globally, yet guarantee high Nordic quality standards, timely deliveries, and support from the vast network, which is the key for success also for the Finnish offshore industry. There are more than 900 marine industry companies in Finland and they can agilely join forces to provide high-end solutions and large projects while retaining competitive pricing. Finnish marine industry is excellent in building complex products and solutions: it is appreciated around the world for state-of-the-art Arctic competence and concept development for different kinds of vessels. Finnish companies are forerunners for instance in environmentally friendly solutions, such as LNG, energy efficient design and solutions for oil spill recovery to complex offshore support vessels, not forgetting comfort accommodation facilities. Offshore production solutions with enhanced safety are important, as safety is of ever-increasing importance in offshore operations. Improved safety

and efficiency of the operations go hand in hand. Unmanned operations and automation are crucial for the future of this business segment. Finland has strong capabilities for this type of research, and these capabilities are also utilised in the offshore industry. Finnish marine industries have put particular emphasis on Arctic issues. Operations in the harsh and demanding arctic conditions demand specific knowledge and expertise. Continuous development ensures that the Finnish marine industry can offer top class products with safe and environmentally sound solutions for the global offshore market. With Finland helming the Arctic Council in 2017-2019, we look forward to strengthening and utilizing our Arctic expertise even further. Our vision is that the Finnish industry will deliver value-adding, sustainable technology to extreme offshore conditions utilising global supply chain networks.
