The term antibacterial refers to a substance that inhibits the growth of microorganisms. Antibacterial powder coatings incorporate advanced silver ion technology which is proven to actively reduce the growth of harmful bacteria on the surface of the coating.

Antibacterial powder coatings have been tested to ISO 22196:2011, showing efficacy against MRSA and E.coli by up to 99.99%.

The silver ion technology in antibacterial coatings reduces bacterial growth by up to 99.99%, providing permanent protection for the lifetime of the product.

Silver is a substance widely used since antiquity for its antibacterial activity. Today it is used in many industries, including detergents, cosmetics, textiles, vending machines, powder coatings.

The antibacterial silver active is added into powder coatings during manufacture, making it a permanent feature. Silver ion technology is incredibly durable and long lasting, as long as the coating is there, the active silver will still be there. Persistence tests have shown that the antibacterial activity of powder coatings does not decay with time.Valspar can confirm with a special instrument the presence of the silver additive in the surface applied with antibacterial powder coating.

Valspar antibacterial powder coatings are ideal for products where point of contact is at risk of cross-contamination from bacteria, including:

· Healthcare products· Architectural ironmongery· Handrails· Leisure equipment

• Health products• Architectural ironmongery• Handrails• Leisure equipment.

It's possible to detect the presence of the antibacterial additive by means of a specific revealing agent and a laser detector. The antibacterial isn’t a replacement for cleaning. The surfaces will still need to be cleaned.
