From Our Pastor
Dear Family,
During the days between Ascension and Pen-tecost, we invited you to join together in prayer forthe coming of the Holy Spirit, just as the disciplesprayed in the Upper Room, so many centuries ago.
We asked you to look to Mary, the Mother ofthe Church, as your model of prayer, just as thedisciples did so many centuries ago.
During those days, members of our parish
family logged in 4,736 minutes of prayer—just
nine minutes short of 79 hours. That is a lot of
prayer, and I am sure that the Holy Spirit will
manifest his power among us in new ways
during the days and weeks which are ahead.
Our parish provided written ideas for how todirect your prayer times during those days. At theheart of these reflections were three importantquestions:• Is Jesus asking you to become an Upper Room
disciple?• What is Jesus asking you to do in order to
become an Upper Room disciple?• How willing are you to answer this invitation
from Jesus?
Even if you were not able to take time forprayer prior to Pentecost, those three questions stilllie at the heart of having a personal relationshipwith the Son of God.
In my reflections throughout the summer, Ihope to come back to Christ’s invitation to disciple-ship over and over again.
May Mary, the First of all disciples, and theMother of all beloved disciples, pray with us and forus so that we may come to understand and toaccept her Son’s will for our lives. God bless you.
Father Tom Kalita
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be forever Amen.

Food DriveJune 2-3, 2018
On the weekend in which we revere in a special way theMost Sacred Body and Blood of Jesus, let us show respectfor the human dimension of his love, that is, in our brothersand sisters living in poverty situations. Let us celebrate theFeast of Corpus Christi by feeding the Body of Christ! Twoopportunities are listed below.
We will collect the food items listed for the food pantriesof several inner-city Washington, D.C., parishes: SaintThomas More, Saint Francis Xavier, Holy Name, and SaintLuke. The families of these communities would not be ableto survive without our donations to their food pantries, especially since school-aged children do not receivesubsidized meals during the summer break. The most-needed items are:
• Canned Tuna or Chicken• Dry, Unsweetened Cereal• Canned Vegetables• Hearty Soups• Canned Fruit• Peanut Butter and Jelly (in plastic containers)• Baked Beans (canned)• Rice (bagged or boxed)• Pasta• Pasta Sauce (in plastic containers)
We will also collect for the inner-city Parish of SaintVeronica, in Philadelphia, where our Youth Group willperform a week of service in July. For this effort, we arecollecting gift cards to Target in $25- or $50-values so thatfood can be purchased locally for the needy families livingwithin the boundaries of Saint Veronica’s Parish.
Please bring your food donations to the Main Church andplace them in front of the wood carvings in the colonnadeaisles. Marked boxes will be placed in those areas so youmay deposit your gift card donations.
Thank you in advance for your continuous care andconcern for those who are financially challenged.

National Arthritis Awareness
Although commonly regarded as a single disease, arthritis is actually defined by more than 100 different clinicaldiagnoses. Arthritis can have a huge impact on how weexperience our world. It is a very common disease in olderwomen. The most common forms of arthritis will bediscussed in the next few bulletins.
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. It issometimes referred to as “degenerative joint disease” or“wear-and-tear” arthritis. Osteoarthritis most frequently affectsthe hands, hips, and knees causing cartilage, the cushioningmaterial between bones, and bones within a joint to breakdown. Changes usually develop slowly before worseningover time. The condition can cause pain, stiffness, andswelling and can result in disability.
One suggested treatment is to participate in joint-friendlyphysical activities that are low impact and place less stresson the body while reducing injury risk.
