sEptEmBER 6 & 7, 2014

During the 1950’s the Beach Barons Car Club was formed by a bunch of local fellows involved in flat head Fords, small block Chevys and a few Oldsmo-bile powered hot rods. The club flourished in its first years as a group of enthusiastic young men and women getting together with one common inter-est: Their automobiles. Guys with names like Duey Ames, Bill Morse, Al Degenhart, Monte Baker, and Jim Howerton were actively participating in the everyday chore of keeping these rides alive. The hangout was Ferguson’s Richfield gas station in Long Beach near the intersection of 8th Street and Pacific Highway. The meetings were held in the old Peninsula Court House. Several U.S. Air Force and Coast Guard members were instrumental in forming the original club and when the government pulled the Air Force out of the area and the envi-

ronmentalists started pulling horsepower from the Detroit engines, the Beach Baron Car Club slid into the annals of history. In 1983 the Ocean Park Chamber of Commerce was asking members of the community for ideas that would encourage visitors. Max Morehouse and Bob Langendofer, two local Lone Wolf car buffs came up with the idea of a car show. The Rod Run to the End of the World was born. A total of 68 cus-tom cars showed up for that first show on Labor Day weekend and everyone felt it was a success. The following year, 120 cars were in attendance and Bob and Max were helped by several of the ex-Beach Barons members. Someone suggested reforming the old car club using the Beach Baron name. By this time about 20 car buffs had come out of hiding and the Beach Barons Car Club was formed and incorporated as a non-profit group for the betterment of the whole community.

Ode to My CarIt’s no secret that America loves its automobiles. A rite of passage of the modern age is acquiring that 2.5” X 3” square of laminated plastic that is the ticket to the privileged world of the open road. I’m no different. That coveted driver’s license, however, is only part of the equation. The real goal was the attainment of one’s own means of transportation. I had my license for two years before I managed to save enough to have my own wheels. My first car was a non-descript one; a silver grey 1983 Chevy Celebrity 2-Door. I rarely see its likeness on the roads anymore, but what it afforded me, and what a car embodies was what “it” is all about: Freedom. “It” is, of course, the possession of a car. What I didn’t fully realize is the long string of cars that came before it had also shaped my love and respect of that icon of the modern world and its success as well as its excesses. I put 40,000 miles on that little car in just under 3 years of ownership, and did a lot of growing up too. For that reason, whenever I do catch a glimpse of a Celebrity, I’m immediately transported to that time of my life, the tenuous bridge between child and adult, when I was never more free than when I had a tank of gas, a few dollars to my name, and little in the way of responsibilities. The very first car that I can vaguely recall was a 1957 MGA. It belonged to my Dad. I can remember looking down from the upstairs window of our house, watching my father return home in the evenings from work, the open car affording me an overhead view of him. I must have been about 3 years old. Not very long after that, the arrival of a baby brother and natural progression along life’s timeline necessitated a green 1970 Plymouth Satellite wagon. I can still feel the impressions that the clear vinyl, patterned seat covers left on my bare legs in the summertime when I wore shorts. I also enjoyed the privilege of lying in the back watching the telephone poles, wires and trees fly past the windows framed against the sky as we traveled to and from our destina-tions. Ahh - the ‘70’s. My parents split up in ’73 or so. My newly single Mom acquired a few memorable cars, they were brief in du-ration. Most of those cars met tragic fates, but luckily no human casualties: A 1970 red Impala convertible, a light blue ‘70 Chevy Malibu, a black ‘70 SS Chevelle. The pace at which they came and went were definitely representative of Mom’s chaotic lifestyle in the years subsequent to my parents’ divorce. There were several other cars next in line, each with something to contribute to my psyche: Dad’s 1949 Ford pickup with an “oogah” horn, a ’62 Dodge, the letters on the emblem were removed and rearranged to say other things such as “O God” or “Dog”, a 1973 Ford Pinto (gotta love a hatchback in the era of drive-in

theaters), until finally, my Dad was able to buy his first brand new car. I remember very well that it was right around his birthday in 1975, August. That car would be the one to have the most profound influence on me for its time served (150,000 miles in 9 years) and the age that I was. It was a 1975 Plymouth Valiant in light green with a white vinyl top, and dark green vinyl bench seats. All five of us could easily travel (Dad, Mom, Brother and Grandma as well as myself) within in its boxy structure. The Valiant took us to Mexico and back, and over most of the back roads in Oregon. It wasn’t exactly a paradigm of vehicular engineering, there were many issues with it, but that allowed my father the opportunity to teach us kids the ins and outs of repair and maintenance. My 16th birthday was spent assisting my father in grind-ing valves in order to pass the DMV inspection and renew its plates. I learned to change a tire, check oil, and a myriad of other fairly routine maintenance tasks, along with a whole slew of pretty colorful words as we sweated it out. I think it’s fair to say that my Dad and I bonded a little bit in and around that old green Plymouth. I can still almost see his briefcase occupying the back seat for his daily commute, something that was relegated to the house for our family drives to the Columbia River Gorge, the Willamette Valley, or any combination of back roads. Dad would also relay stories of the vehicles that he had owned during his youth. His first, a 1941 Chevrolet Coupe which he purchased using money earned picking berries, and how his own father and he had worked together maintaining and repairing it. A 1973 Mercury Comet was added to the family when my father remarried. That was my step mom’s grocery getter until it was replaced by a 1980 Mercury Mon-arch; two cars couldn’t be more different if they tried. Interwoven within the human relationship, if you look to the past century, has become a tapestry of makes and models pertaining to the automobile. As they say it’s not about the destination, it’s the jour-ney, and so is the car not so much about what you’re driving as who you’re riding with. While it may be cooler to wax poetic about the 1968 Chevelle SS, I can get a little starry-eyed over that Valiant just as easily. I’m so glad my father loved driving. We traveled many miles and saw many wonderful sights, but along the way, we shared stories, recited poems, laughed, and yes we argued. How long can a family of five strong-willed people stay cooped up without having a disagreement here or there, anyway? Most of all we spent time together, built memories that endure and arrive within my thought process many times when I am on a familiar

stretch of road, or see a car like the ones we used to have. When I attend the Rod Run as a spectator - while ogling the beautiful cars and enjoying the sound of the horsepower display, I am also traveling down a memory lane courtesy of those cars, even the (now very cool) ones my Dad owned before I was born and spoke about both fondly and not so fondly. Sure, I might even see a 1975 Plymouth Valiant out there one day, and hope to peek in the window at the backseat where I once rode, privy to a view of the Western United States roadside glories, but also my family’s conversations and comfort-ing presence. Cars represent all of these things; the freedom, the ability to look cool by proxy, to get a job done, to get to a job...but most of all, the memories and the connection to our family and friends created within their reinforced structures. Enjoy the memories, and experience the moment as you build more.I now drive a 2010 Ford Flex, it’s been a terrific car, already rolling up on a century in the miles depart-ment. It carries my kids, friends, and myself safely and comfortably, and already has four years worth of great memories contained within its existence.

Too early to wax nostalgic on these, but one day....

We have produced premium Hubs for the following companies: Chicago Rawhide (SKF), the Timken Company and Federal Mogul. Moving from the Flint, MI area in 1998 we built a state of the art facility in Gaylord, MI, and gained our ISO 9001/2000 certified in 2003. Kasper Ind is currently ISO 9001/2008 certified. We started Wheel Bearings, Inc in 2005 to bring our product directly into the marketplace.

All of our suppliers are carefully selected which allows us to use only quality components to assemble each unit. Every hub assembly that we produce is tested before it leaves our facility to ensure the highest quality possible. Our entire line is either made at our facility or is the OEM unit. We do not import from overseas just to fill in our line like many other companies. If you really want to make your customer happy, sell them a premium hub unit from WBI.

-Premium Hub Units.-Manufactured & Assembled by an ISO 9001/2008 Company.-Manufactured using only the highest Quality components.
