TEMPLE HIRES MATT RHULE AS FOOTBALL COACH

Matt Rhule, who has 15 seasons of coaching experience on the collegiate and pro-

fessional levels, was named Temple University's 26th head football coach on December

17, 2012. He most recently served as the assistant offensive line coach with the New

York Giants. The State College, Pa., native, a former player at Penn State, has 14 years

of collegiate coaching experience, including six seasons at Temple, and six bowl games-- two with the Owls-- on his resume.

Rhule, 37, joined the Giants last spring. He worked closely with Pat Flaherty, who has been the offensive line coach since 2004.

During his previous tenure at Temple, Rhule's role changed several times. Last spring, he was promoted to co-offensive coordinator after

serving as the assistant offensive coordinator and tight ends coach as well as the recruiting coordinator under Steve Addazio in 2011. Temple's

2012 recruiting class was ranked No. 1 in the Mid-American Conference and helped lay the foundation for the program's transition to the BIG

EAST Conference.

Under Al Golden, Rhule was promoted to offensive coordinator in the spring of 2008. He also coached the TU quarterbacks. He coached

the defensive line in 2006 and served as the quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator during the 2006 and 2007 seasons. For three con-

secutive years, Temple's recruiting class was ranked No. 1 in the MAC [2006, 2007, 2008].

In 2011, the Owls went 9-4 and played in the fourth bowl game in school history, the Gildan New Mexico Bowl, where they crushed

Wyoming, 37-15 – Temple's first postseason victory since the 1979 Garden State Bowl. Rhule mentored two-time first-team All-MAC selec-

tion TE Evan Rodriguez. For the second time in Rhule's tenure, the Owls set the Temple single-season rushing yardage record and rushing touch-

downs records behind the explosive efforts of All-MAC junior running backs Bernard Pierce and Matt Brown.

Rhule arrived in Owl Country after spending four seasons as an assistant coach at Western Carolina, including three as assistant head

coach. Prioir to that, Rhule served as assistant defensive line coach at UCLA in 2001. He assisted in coaching five Bruins that earned All PAC-

10 honors as the team posted a 7-4 record under head coach Bob Toledo.

Rhule played four seasons at linebacker with the Nittany Lions under Joe Paterno. A three-time Penn State Scholar-Athlete, he earned

Academic All-Big Ten honors in 1997. Born January 31, 1975, Rhule received his undergraduate degree in political science before earning his

master's degree in educational psychology from Buffalo in 2003.

He is married to the former Julie Nibert. The couple has an eight-year old son, Bryant, and a newborn, Vivienne.

On April 3, 2013, the former Big East Conference announced that it would be renamed

the American Athletic Conference and would rebrand as such across all platforms, associa-

tions and media at the conclusion of the 2012-13 sports seasons. The announcement was

made by Commissioner Mike Aresco after unanimous approval by the Conference's Board of

Directors.

“We worked with our institutions, sports marketing experts, media partners, and also

solicited opinions and reactions from collegiate sports fans to create a compelling list of

names,” said Aresco. “Versions that included the word 'American' led every list. American

Athletic Conference represents a strong, durable and aspirational name for our reinvented

Conference.

“We engaged our fans through social media and focus groups in multiple cities, and

we conducted extensive quantitative research,” Aresco added. “We also received terrific

input from our partners at ESPN and CBS Sports. Our name is a nod to tradition, but at the

same time makes clear our determination to be a Conference with national impact and

appeal. The American Athletic Conference will represent core American values of optimism,

energy, growth and innovation. We have a broad geographical footprint that represents unity

as well as diversity.”

Beginning with the 2014-15 academic year, the American Athletic Conference will consist of the University of Central Florida, the

University of Cincinnati, the University of Connecticut, East Carolina University, the University of Houston, the University of Memphis, Southern

Methodist University, the University of South Florida, Temple University, Tulane University and the University of Tulsa. The U.S. Naval Academy

will become a football-only member in 2015. With 12 football schools in the fold by 2015, it will play a football championship game.

After earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament for a sixth

straight year, the #9-seeded Temple men’s basketball team

defeated #8-seeded NC State, 76-72, to advance to the NCAA

Second Round. Senior Khalif Wyatt scored a game-high 31

points in the win, while senior Jake O’Brien hit 4-of-6 from

behind the arc on his way to scoring 18 points. Also reaching

double figures was senior Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson with 12 points.

The Owls, who played at a familiar site in Dayton, Ohio, took

on the #1-seeded and top-ranked Indiana Hoosiers in the

Second Round. Despite another game-high 31 points from

Wyatt, a trip to the Sweet Sixteen was not to be as Indiana

pulled ahead towards the end of the game for a 58-52 victory.

Temple finished its 2012-13 campaign with a record of 24-

10, and Wyatt was named both the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year

and Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Year. The Owls will return

eight of their 13 players for the 2013-14 season under what will

be head coach Fran Dunphy's eighth season at the helm.

Seniors Alex Tighe of the men's gymnastics team and Katie Briglia ofthe field hockey team were named the PNC Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year.

Tighe, a native of Brookfield, Wisc., (Swiss Turners HS), was named the2013 ECAC Senior Athlete of the Year and helped the Owls capture theconference title and advance to the NCAA Championship. A standoutin his sport, he has won ECAC titles on both the horizontal bars and par-allel bars during his stellar career. In the classroom, the AppliedMathematics & Spanish double major owns a 3.92 cumulative gradepoint average and is a three-year member of Temple's Trustee Ten.

Briglia, a three-time first team all-conference honoree, saved her bestseason for her last, scoring five goals and dishing a team-high 11assists while captaining the Owls as a senior. The Temple standout hasalso been selected to the All-Region team and the A10 Championshipteam twice and earned a spot in the NFCHA Senior All-Star game. Inthe classroom, the Phoenixville, Pa., native (Villa Maria Academy) post-ed a 3.71 cumulative grade point average while earning a place on the

HOnORIng EXCELLEnCETemple University honored its best in athletics, both on and off the field, at its 11th annual Breakfast of Champions on the morning of April24, 2013. In all, over 400 Temple student-athletes were recognized for academic and athletic accomplishments. In addition to individualand team awards presented at the annual event, it was announced that 202 student-athletes were named to the Director's Honor Roll(3.0-3.49 cumulative grade point average) with an additional 81 student-athletes named to the President's Honor Roll (3.50 or above).

In its biggest upset win of the 2012-13 season, the Temple men’s basketball team tookdown #3/3 Syracuse in the Challenge Round game of the Gotham Classic at MadisonSquare Garden on Dec. 22, 2012. Khalif Wyatt scored 33 points while Anthony Lee addeda career-high 21 points to help the Owls hand the Orange their first loss of the season.

SPORT HIgHLIgHTS FROM 2012-13

Senior Chelsea Tupuola was named the Atlantic10 Volleyball Libero of the Year after an outstand-ing season which saw her lead the league with579 digs. Tupuola finished her career with 1,429digs to rank seventh all-time in program history.

Men’s soccer earned a berth in the Atlantic 10 Tournament for a third straight year, goingan impressive 6-1-1 in conference play to finish fifth after tiebreakers. Overall, the Owlswent 10-6-2 for the season, and Jared Martinelli was named the A-10 Rookie of the Year.

The men’s gymnastics team wonits second-straight ECACChampionship and the 30th in pro-gram history. The Owls advancedto the NCAA Tournament for a sec-ond year in a row, placing 12th.Fred Turoff was named the ECACCoach of the Year, while PatrickMcLaughlin was named the ECACAssistant Coach of the Year. AlexTighe earned Senior Athlete of theYear honors from the ECAC.

Senior penalty kicker and punter BrandonMcManus was the recipient of the 2012 CollegeFootball Performance Awards Specialist Trophy.McManus ended his collegiate career asTemple's career leader in scoring (338), puntingaverage (45.4), field goals made (60), and fieldgoals attempted (83). The 2012 first-team All-BIG EAST punter and 2012 second-team All-BIGEAST kicker set the season record for field goalaccuracy (82.4) and set game records at Armyfor extra points made (9) and attempted (9).McManus played in every game of his collegiatecareer.


Freshman golfer Brandon Matthews had a sensationalseason which culminated in being a top alternate forthe 2013 U.S. Open Championship at Merion Golf Club.Matthews, an all-region selection as well as theAtlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, recorded the loweststroke average (72.27) among all A-10 golfers andplaced second at the A-10 Championship.

Junior Stephanie Pasquale was named a 2013 NFCADivision I Third Team All-American after a record-set-ting year. She was tabbed as the Atlantic 10 Player ofthe Year, leading the team and the A-10 with a .465average and hitting .552 in conference play. She set aTemple and A-10 single-season record for RBI with 80.Pasquale’s efforts helped lead the Owls to a 32-26record, setting the mark for most wins in a season.

Field hockey sophomore Amber Youtz wasnamed the 2012 Atlantic 10 Offensive Playerof the Year and was also selected to theLongstreth/NFHCA All-Region Second Team.

Men’s basketball senior Khalif Wyattwas named an Associated PressHonorable Mention All-American afteraveraging a conference-leading 20.5points per game. Wyatt was alsonamed the Atlantic 10 Player of theYear, the Philadelphia Big 5 Player ofthe Year and was selected to the NABCAll-District First Team. He tallied 1,576career points to rank 13th on the pro-gram's all-time list, and scored 30 ormore points in seven games in 2012-13.

Temple’s men’s and women’s basketball teams now practicein a brand-new state-of-the-art facility in Pearson-McGonigle Hall,which had its grand opening early in the 2012-13 season. Theproject was just one part of a major renovation project costingaround $58 million.

The men’s basketball practice gym now houses the Donaldand Nancy Resnick Court, while the women’s gym is home to theJoan Ballots Court.

Among the impressive new features of the complex are:• 30,000 square feet for the men's and women's practice facility• 24-hour access to facility• regulation-size basketball courts• coaches' offices• locker rooms with player lounges• recruiting and meeting space• cutting-edge sports medicine equipment• advanced digital technologies• strength and conditioning areas• high-tech video rooms with theater-style seating• an academic study lounge• men's and women's basketball historical display including inter-active features


SERvIng THE COMMUnITYTemple field hockey is active in many programs that helpteach the sport to local students. The Owls were select-ed by USA Field Hockey as a host for both the USFHAFUNdamental Field Hockey program and the You Go Girlprogram. The team also works with the Black Women inSports Foundation to teach field hockey to its after-school program at Martha Washington ElementarySchool. You Go Girl is a USA Field Hockey initiative thatwill introduce field hockey to young women and girls,ages 10-18, in non-traditional or at-risk communitieswith the help of NCAA student-athletes. On May 12, nearly 70 team members of the TempleUniversity Football Family participated in the 2013Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure. The racers,which participated in either a 5K Run, 5K Walk, or 1-mileFun Walk, raised close to $7,000 for their inauguralevent. In addition to 15 members of the team who par-ticipated in the 1-mile Fun Walk, 30 members of theteam worked the race (for the seventh consecutiveyear), assisting with set-up and event management.Pictured at left are team members Evan Regas (left) andSean Boyle. Regas, who lost his mother to breast can-cer in the fall of 2012, served as one of four team cap-tains for the event.

The men's basketball team paid a specialvisit to AstraZeneca Hope Lodge on January17. The Owls served and ate dinner with thecancer patients and their guests staying atthe lodge. The team visit also includedgames and giveaways. The AstraZenecaHope Lodge of the American Cancer Societyoffers lodging at no cost for cancer patientsbeing treated in the Philadelphia area.Patients live with other people goingthrough similar experiences, and are sup-ported by caring staff and volunteers.

In early April, Temple baseball supported childhood cancer withthe Vs. Cancer Foundation, which has the mission of saving kidslives by empowering athletes and communities to fund lifesav-ing childhood cancer efforts. After the game, the entire teamand coaching staff took part in shaving their heads, with friendsand family gathered in support to take part in the postgameactivities. Dear Temple Athletics Family,

On behalf of the Owl Club Executive Board, the Athletics Department and our more than 600 student-athletes who proudly sport the Cherry andWhite uniform, thank you for your support of the Temple Owl Club! I am delighted to present to you the 2012-13 Financial Report. As you readthis publication, I encourage you to take a few moments and consider how memorable the past year has been, especially the positive impactyour generosity has contributed to our academic and athletic prowess.

2012-13 featured undeniable achievements by our student-athletes in the classroom, through significant community service initiatives and atthe highest level of athletic competition. For instance, Owl student-athletes recorded their highest Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in the his-tory of Temple University at a rate of 81 percent. I cannot think of a more compelling reason to support Temple Athletics when I am remindedof how truly committed our student-athletes are to academic success and timely graduation.

In addition, effective July 1, 2013, the American Athletic Conference became the new sports home forTemple, an exciting relationship offering the University unprecedented exposure and opportunities for currentand future generations of Owls. In this all-sports conference, Temple’s competitive schedule received anautomatic and welcome boost, becoming peers with several national powerhouse athletic programs includ-ing Central Florida, Cincinnati, Connecticut and Memphis.

The Owl Club also posted record numbers for the 2012-13 Membership Year, with donations to Athletics’annual fund increasing by 36 percent and reaching an all-time high. As Owl Club President, I assure youTemple Athletics is worthy of your investments of time, enthusiasm and philanthropy. And as friends ofTemple Athletics, we all have the choice to help make our student-athletes’ dreams of championship excel-lence a reality, to ensure they enjoy a more premier college experience abundant with opportunities to growintellectually, athletically and professionally.
