Scaling Greater Heights‘Diya’s Sheltered Workshop enhances training and employment opportunities for the differently abled’Our PeopleDiya’s workshop expanded operations and shifted to a larger premise in September 2009. The gift of a Maruti Van for transportation helped increase the total number of trainees to 30. A well-designed curriculum to impart different skills enhanced all round progress. The trainees painted terracotta diyas, made paper bags and lampshades, decorated greeting cards, and packed chocolates in boxes. Outdoor activities included picnics, games and painting competitions. At Diya, our trainees are on a journey to discover their abilities and involve in activities that bring joy, confidence and fulfillment into their lives.

Our ProductsNew lip smacking chocolate flavors, designer candles and diyas, colorful greeting cards, eco-friendly paper products and exquisite packaging options rolled out of our workshop last year. These were in great demand by corporate houses and individuals as they celebrated festivals, birthdays, and weddings. Bulk orders ensured employment opportunities for our trainees.

Our PatronsFunds for the Workshop were raised through Diya’s staff, sponsors and participants at the World 10-K, a Christmas musical by the Cecilian Choir, donations from Opus restaurants and individual supporters. Investments were made in facilities and programs that helped enhance the training of 30 mentally challenged adults.

At the Workshop, our trainees learn new skills, grow in an environment of love, care, and acceptance, and earn monthly stipends.

AS THEY SCALE GREATER HEIGHTS, SO DOES DIYA.

Diya Foundation provides vocational training and sheltered employment to differently abled adults in Bangalore.

Twenty six year old Manjula was born with Down’s Syndrome and spent most

of her childhood confined at home. However, ten years ago, destiny determined to terminate the stagnation in her life. Manjula became one of the first few differently abled trainees to join Diya Foundation’s Vocational Training program. Life at Diya introduced her to a new world of opportunities – a world where she made new friends, discovered and developed inherent skills, and learnt a trade.

Manjula’s training program began in the Paper Product Unit. Under diligent supervision and care by Diya’s staff, she learnt to recycle newspaper,

make pens, bags, bowls and other products. She has always been a keen and enthusiastic learner.

Today, Manjula works with minimal supervision and often helps in training others like her at Diya. She accompanies Diya’s staff on outdoor trips to display and market products made at the workshop. When customers buy her products, it fills her with a sense of pride and fulfilment. Moreover, a monthly stipend offers her financial security.

At Diya, Manjula is thrilled that life has opened a new vista for her. The new journey she has embarked on helps her discover herself and scale

greater heights – a journey that also fuels Diya Foundation to greater heights.

Last year, Diya excitedly welcomed Mrs. Mary Thomas, a Counsellor and

Social Worker, into its family. Mary, who considers social work not as a mere “job” but as an “integral part of one’s life,” was actively involved with the welfare and rehabilitation of differently abled people for 25 years. During this period, she also initiated a rehabilitation program for Spinal Cord injured persons in Bangalore.

At Diya, Mary Thomas has been actively involved in spending quality time with our mentally challenged trainees. They love to receive words of encouragement from her and run to her for help when hurt or in trouble. She monitors their progress in work, recreational activities and needs for a balanced and healthy diet. Mary instills

hope and confidence into their lives. She visits their homes to counsel and guide family members. Her untiring efforts have ensured that the trainees become beneficiaries of the

Government’s Social Security Schemes and medical welfare programs. Both staff and trainees at Diya have benefited immensely from her expertise in guidance and counseling.

Her dream is to see Diya establish itself in a permanent premise, become self sufficient through its vocational activities, and thereby impact a larger number of differently abled people.

With her effective agenda for change and progress and an unwavering spirit of service, Mary Thomas is a

valuable asset to Diya. She has become a powerful catalyst in the transformational journey of Diya towards greater heights.

Anirvan Ghosh: The unquenchable flameThe testimony of Suparna Banerjee, Anirvan’s delighted sister.

On December 16, 1969, my parents were blessed with their firstborn son. They named him ‘Anirvan’ which is the Sanskrit for ‘eternal flame’. True to his name, Ani, as we lovingly call

him, safeguarded that eternal spark despite all odds.

A childhood plagued with high fever and convulsions that eventually affected his brain caused Ani to be a slow learner. The conventional school system did not have the facility or the mindset to accept a person like him. Years of failure, rejection, and silent suffering took a toll on Ani. He suffered a breakdown as a teen. What followed were years of treatment and the search for specialized institutions.

In 2007, we were referred to the Diya Foundation. Meeting the staff here changed the course of Ani’s life. He joined the trainees at Diya and was ready to start life afresh. By 2009, he learnt to work on the laptop and is now employed in Diya’s Data Entry Unit. His monthly stipend fills him with a sense of accomplishment.

In November 2009, Ani took a giant step. While my parents returned home to Dehradun, he joined Diya Foundation’s group home. Under the able supervision of the house parent, he is progressing well, enjoying the stay, food and recreation in the home. Finally, with the unconditional support, love, and guidance of the staff at Diya, we as a family have found hope for Anirvan’s future.

Differently abled people find care and protection in Diya’s first group home for boys

Parents of children with a mental disability share a common fear; who will care

for their children when they can no longer do so? To help assuage this fear and provide hope for the future, Diya opened its first group home in November 2009, in a rented premise, close to the Sheltered Workshop in Cooke Town, Bangalore. This was made

possible by funding for the year from Sir Dorabji Tata Trust. Presently we have two residents under the able care of a House Parent.

The residents plan their day around their regular schedule of training and work at the workshop. After a day’s work, they return home to share in the daily chores and unwind by playing games, watching T.V. or going for short walks. On weekends, family visits are allowed.

We believe that the home will give our trainees the opportunity to

live healthy, safe and enjoyable lives. They will also have access to services and support of the highest quality. While we intend to gradually raise the occupancy of the home to six residents, a permanent home, owned by Diya is the vision we hope to realize.

The trainees at the home as Anirvan’s story tells are more confident, independent, happy and secure. Their families now have peace of mind regarding the future of their children and are happy and satisfied in what is being provided.

Our Mission:Diya Foundation seeks to enrich the quality of life of differently abled adults by training them in vocational skills and empowering them to live fulfilling and productive lives.

Our Vision:Diya Foundation envisions differently abled individuals and their families alive with dignity and pride in the present and hope in the future.

Our HistoryThe idea of a Vocational Training Center for adults with a mental disability conceptualized when Maria Santamaria, a special educator, saw many of her students ready to leave their school program at the age of 18, with little or no preparation to deal with the challenges of the world outside. The desire to provide such individuals a place where they can learn a trade, earn and gain confidence in a nurturing environment led to the setting up of DIYA Foundation as a registered Trust in March 1999. Today, Diya provides training and employment opportunities to 30 intellectually challenged adults assisted by a Staff team of 10, four of whom are physically challenged. Products manufactured at Diya’s vocational units are exclusive and of high quality, on par with the market.

We Believe…Differently abled individuals are trainable, can work and earn and be independent to the extent possible.

Diya’s Future Plans• Enhance work options for the

mentally challenged in the Sheltered Workshop through two new units – Horticulture and Screen Printing.

• Organise fund raising drives towards the Land/Building Fund.

• Engage Diya’s Staff team in personality development, skill enhancement and team building programs.

• Introduce a structured Volunteer management program.

• Upgrade the Diya Foundation website.

Diya’s Needs Diya Foundation needs your support and generosity to enable differently abled people become productive members of society.

• Be a part of our dream and help empower people with challenges.

• The cost of running the Sheltered Workshop is Rs. 12 lakhs per annum.

• The estimated cost of running the Group Home is Rs. 4.5 lakhs per annum.

• Patronize products from the Diya workshop, outsource back-end office work to our Data Entry unit, or be financial partners and savour the joy of seeing Diya’s special people blossom and grow, earn and live life to its fullest.
