My Dear Friends in Christ,

This Sunday marks the end of the Christmas Season: our Gospel focuses on the beginning of what is often

called Christ’s public life. The Baptism of Christ in the Jordan by John the Baptist is the subject of much

preaching and art. Why, so many asked, would Jesus consent to be baptized by a mere human such as John?

The answers, like those to the most meaningful questions in life, are multiple: by His Baptism, Jesus made the

water holy; Jesus showed us that we too must be baptized; this was another example of Jesus making Himself

lowly for our sake. There could be more answers as well.

What we do know, however, in all of this, is that the Baptism of Jesus was the jumping off point for his new

ministry: the ministry to which He was called by His heavenly Father. In our baptisms too, we are irrevocably

called into something new. Let us live this new life – new baptized life – together!

With prayers,

Contribution Envelopes are available

An Update About Father Christopher Dietrich, OFM Cap.

After many faithful years of ministry at Sacred Heart, our Capuchin Fraternity now seeks to support Father Christopher during his senior years. This year, Fr. Chris will celebrate 65 years as a Capuchin Friar. Now at the age of 86, Fr. Chris has been dealing with declining health over the past several years. Due to increasing memory and vision issues, we have been encouraging Fr. Chris to attend Mass with the other senior Friars at Saint Clare Friary. Our utmost concern as brothers is to care for each other: because of this, we are seeking to help Fr. Chris remain as safe and cared for as possible. Although you may not see Fr. Chris often, know that he is receiving the care he needs at this time in his life. Please remember Fr. Chris in your prayers; and be assured that he remembers the parish often in his!

Health Care Workshop Series

Sacred Heart Parish will be initiating a monthly workshop series on important topics in the healthcare field starting on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at 1:00 pm in the school cafeteria. The first workshop will be on Advance Directives: Understanding what they are and why they are so important. During the workshop, the presenters will address such topics as: the different types of advance directives (Health Care Proxy, Do Not Resuscitate Orders, Living Will and Medical Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment); the role and responsibilities of the Health Care Proxy under NYS Law; the pros and cons of various treatment options such as CPR, artificial nutrition and pain relief; and what you should do with your advance directive(s) once completed.

Advance directive forms as well as other pertinent information will be available to all in attendance. After the workshop, the presenters will assist anyone who wants to initiate or complete an advance directive form.

Please give yourself and your loved ones a priceless gift this year – complete an advance directive!

February 10, 2019

Advance Directives: Understanding what They Are and Why They are Important

Health Care Proxies, Living Wills, Do Not Resuscitate Orders and Medical Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (MOLST) will be discussed in addition

to various life-sustaining treatment measures such as CPR, artificial nutrition, ventilators, hospitalization and antibiotics

March 3, 2019: Pain and Pain Management: Finding Relief

The different types of pain - physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual – will be addressed as well as different ways to treat pain using both pharma-cological and non-pharmacological measures (medicines and therapies)

April 7, 2019: Palliative Care vs Hospice Care: Understanding the Difference

Palliative care and hospice care share the same primary focus - patient

All workshops will be held in the school cafeteria at 1:00 pm

Refreshments will be served Please call the Parish Office to Register for the February Workshop.
