Mentors remind students of important deadlines, serve as a trusted college resource and encourage students to reach their full potential. The time commitment is small, only about one hour per month, but the impact can be life changing for students hoping to better their lives.Montgomery County needs mentors for this program. Deadline is November 20. For more information or to apply please visit https://tnachieves.org/mentors/requirements/

What is your full name?Joseph Dewayne Smith

What is your profession?Kitchen and Bath Designer/Professional Firefighter

Where did you go to school and what did you study?American Intercontinental University/ Business Administration A.S. Degree

Why did you choose your current profession? My family has been a part of the cabinet industry in Clarksville for over 40 years, so runs through my veins. I love helping people bring a vision or idea to life. As far as firefighting, when I left the Marine Corps, I needed a career that would let me serve my community and give me the adrenaline rush I was used to in the military.

Where are you from originally?I have lived in Clarksville for 27 of my 32 years, and it will always be a place I call home. The five years away from Clarksville were spent traveling around the world visiting many countries and cultures. I used those opportunities to learn about how other governments and cultures function, in order to bring that knowledge back to Clarksville.

Tell us about your family:I have a lovely wife named Una, and between us we have 5 kids: Heidi 15, Andrew 13, John 11, Annabelle 8, and Wyatt 6. We call ourselves the Smith 7,

because even though we are a blended family, we all love each other to the moon and back. My father is from Clarksville and graduated from CHS. He has been a general superintendent for a commercial contracting business for the last 30 years. My mother moved to Clarksville in middle school and graduated from MCHS. She has been in the cabinet industry for 32 years and started her own business, Jodi's Cabinet Sales, 14 years ago. My family has deep roots in the Clarksville community and I hope my children will want to continue to call Clarksville home when they are ready to start their own families.

What do you like most about Clarksville? I love the fact that Clarksville is a very diverse community and still keeps the small town charm. We are growing and we need the continued efforts of forward thinking people to make sure our lifelong residents still love the city they were raised in, while new residents feel welcomed and comfortable in their communities. Clarksville is a place where everyone can feel at home.

If you could have any other profession what would it be?Well, if I could have any profession, I would have to say being my main profession. As a firefighter for the city, I get the chance to serve my community every third day. It is an adrenaline rush when we go on emergency calls, from fighting fires to medical calls. I love helping people and saving lives. I try to personally wish each patient to “get well soon” before they leave my care. If I lose that passion for my patient, then it will be time for me to move on to a new profession.

What is your favorite meal?I am a simple man, so my favorite meal would have to be a nice steak and baked potato.

What’s your favorite movie or TV show?My favorite movie is definitely Tombstone. It is a classic in my eyes. I even named my youngest son Wyatt.

Who is your role model? My role models would be my mother and father, they both have extremely high work ethic and drive to better themselves. Those traits have been instilled in me, and I could not thank them enough for that.

What has been the toughest challenge you’ve had to overcome in your life?I have had some pretty low moments in life, as many of us have. I am a believer that if you have not failed, you will never succeed. Failure can make us strive for success. I have been through several difficult times, from war to divorce. I used each event as a learning lesson.

How would you like your life to look 10 years from now?In 10 years, I will be 10 years from retirement, and will be looking forward to having any debts paid off completely by then. I set goals and try to break them.

When and to where was your last vacation? My last vacation was with my wife back in March. We went to Hawaii for a week. We had a great time swimming with the Dolphins and turtles. And, not to mention just relaxing on the beach.

What is your favorite pastime or hobby? My favorite hobby is fishing, although I rarely get the chance to anymore. I am a firm believer that if I work hard now, I can play hard when I retire.

If you could leave one message to the Clarksville community what would it be?My message to the Clarksville Community would be to stay engaged in your community. We cannot let the what goes on in the rest of the country have an affect our amazing community, by causing division or tension. If we all stay engaged, we can all help keep our communities moving forward and continue to make Clarksville stand out in positive ways. And remember to “Shop Local!”
