On The Way

The Mass in Slowest Motion: Saints and Conclusions
After interceding for the dead, the priest turns his
attention back to us. Striking his breast, he acknowledges
our need for God’s compassion: To us, also, your serv-
ants, who, though sinners, hope in your abundant mer-
cies… Notice the kind of mercy asked for: not simply
freedom from sin but holiness and sanctity some share
and fellowship with [the] holy Apostles and Martyrs.
Then comes a list of some such apostles and mar-
tyrs. John the Baptist, the cousin and forerunner of Christ,
heads the list. After him follow seven men and seven
women. Some we know directly from Scripture: Stephen,
the deacon and first martyr; Matthias, who took the place
of Judas in the college of the Twelve; and Barnabas,
Paul’s companion in his missionary journeys.
Others we know from the history of the early
Church. Ignatius, the bishop of Antioch, while en route to
martyrdom in Rome wrote a series of letters to churches
that remain important spiritual and theological reading.
Alexander was the fifth Pope. Marcellinus the priest and
Peter the exorcist were beheaded outside of Rome during
the persecution of Diocletian.
Then follows the list of women: Felicity, a Ro-
man mother of seven martyred children who her herself
was martyred; Felicity, a noblewoman martyred in Car-
thage; Agatha of Catania in Sicily who died in prison after
considerable torture and suffering; Lucy, another Sicilian
saint, who was executed in the Diocletian persecution;
Agnes of Rome; Cecilia, also of Rome, the patroness of
musicians; and Anastasia, who was martyred in present
day Serbia.
Notice that our veneration of these saints is di-
rected to sharing their fellowship: admit us, we beseech
you, into their company, not weighing our merits, but
granting us your pardon. It is an appeal for the grace to
imitate them in their sacrifices for Christ.
The priest summarizes these prayers and in-
deed the entire prayer through Christ our Lord. Then re-
ferring to the offering before him on the altar, he says,
Through whom you continue to make all these good
things, O Lord; you sanctify them, fill them with life, bless
them, and bestow them upon us.
Finally, the eucharistic prayer reaches its cul-
mination in the doxology, the concluding verse of praise to
the Father: Through him, and with him, and in him, O
God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all
glory and honor is yours, for ever and ever. As he speaks
(or sings) these words, the priest lifts up the chalice and
paten. This is traditionally known as the “minor eleva-
tion.” Its purpose is not to show the host and chalice to the
people, as with the prior two elevations. Rather, he lifts
the paten and chalice as a way of presenting them that is,
Christ Himself to the Father.
This prayer and gesture encapsulates the
Catholic life. At all times we should seek to give glory and
honor to the Father through, with, and in Christ in the
unity of the Holy Spirit.

First Communions at St. James

Please join us in congratulating the 87 young St. James parishioners who have made, or will be
making, their First Communions over the next few weeks. While we typically celebrate First
Communion in May, due to the Covid19 pandemic, we had to make alternate plans. The first
group of Communicants made their First Communions on Saturday, July 18. Group Two will
make theirs on Saturday, July 25, and the last group will make theirs on Saturday, August 8.
Please pray for these young people at this vital step of their faith formation.
