The world’s first smart phone was born in Tampere in

1996. Nokia’s investments in R&D in Tampere have

proved profitable as indicated by many bright

innovations, such as the Nokia Communicator and the

Nokia camera and gaming phones.

The ability to apply automation and ICT in the

development of machinery and equipment has advanced

the Tampere-based mechanical engineering to be one of

the world’s leading players in the field. The Tampere

region is a world-class mobile machinery competence

cluster, with well-known names such as Kalmar,

Sandvik, John Deere Forestry and Metso.

Bright INVESTments

European Laser Valley has attracted several

companies. Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at

the Tampere University of Technology is the largest

university-based research centre in Europe in the

molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) crystal growth technique.

The maintenance system for the ITER fusion reactor

to be built in France will be delivered from Tampere. The

counterparts are investing millions of euros in the

ROViR, the research environment for remote handling

and virtual technology.

BioMediTech, a joint institute of Tampere University of

Technology and University of Tampere, brings together a

powerful mix of over 250 scientists and multidisciplinary

expertise in life sciences and medical technology.

BioMediTech conducts world-class basic and

translational research in biomedicine and medical

technology. Its research activities cover diverse fields,

including biomaterials, stem cells, cancer, immunology,

biosensors, imaging, and computational methods.

The institute also houses FinMIT, the Academy of

Finland Centre of Excellence in research on

mitochondrial disease and ageing.
