FEB-MAR 2018

After two years of searching Scripture and getting the input from the congregation, the Servant Leader Board has approved four Core Values to help shape decisions and disciples at Wesley Chapel. During the process, one of the first core values that emerged was to be a Godly Church. When I first came to Wesley Chapel, I asked you to pray that I would be a Godly Pastor. I promised to pray for you to be a Godly Church. One of the purposes of a core value is to distinguish us from the rest of the world. As we began to examine Scripture and wrestle with how to narrow down an excellent group of about 15 core values to only four, we discovered that Godly was not our best choice. The Pharisees of Jesus day claimed to be Godly. We asked ourselves, how can we distinguish ourselves from the Pharisees? We quickly replaced Godly with the core value of “Christ-like.” Value #1: As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are to follow Jesus to become like Jesus. The Apostle Paul writes, “Follow me as I follow Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). When we look at the life of Christ in the gospels, we discover that Jesus is loving, compassionate, service-oriented, and forgiving. The Apostle John wrote that

Proverbs 22:17

“A merry heart does good like medicine”

Jesus “was full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). Many of these characteristics of Christ were on the list of possible Core Values but by choosing to Christ-like, we are also choosing to develop the character of Christ in us. Value #2: Even though to be Christ-like is to be loving, we decided that being loving is the most important quality of Christ and so loving became a separate core value. In every survey that we did over the past two years, loving was at the top of the list. Jesus quoted Deuteronomy when he was asked what might be the greatest commandment. He said, “Love the LORD your God with all your heart, your soul, your mind, and your strength. Love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:30-31). One of the ways we love God is through passionate worship. One of the ways we love people is by serving as Jesus served (John 13:15). Since Jesus said loving is the most important commandment, we wanted to include it as a core value of Wesley Chapel. Value #3: The Bible points us to faith and life in Jesus. When Jesus gave us the mission to make disciples in Matthew 28:19-20, he also told us to teach what he taught. Paul tells Timothy that Scripture is God-breathed, is useful for teaching and correcting, and contains everything necessary for salvation (2 Timothy 3:14-17). As the people of Wesley Chapel, the Bible is our primary source for intentional faith development. The message during worship should always be based on the Bible. Biblical is the core value that shapes our faith, our beliefs, and our practices. Value #4: The core value of community is built upon relationships. Community begins with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in community together as one God in three persons. God creates humans and proposes a covenant by saying, “I will be your God and you will be my people” (Exodus 6:7). This covenant relationship is extended to all people through Jesus Christ. As disciples of Jesus we form a church community and are in fellowship with one another that is often referred to by Paul as “the Body of Christ” (1 Corinthians 12:27). As Christians we are then to be salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16) as we love our neighbors and share the gospel of Jesus Christ with people in our community. In the February sermon series, we will look more closely at each core value and how the Holy Spirit is transforming us to take on the character of Christ.

Serving Opportunity If you are looking for a place to serve here at Wesley Chapel, we would like to invite you to join our communion team! Communion is offered the first Sunday of each month, and teams can rotate while choosing the time at which they prefer to serve. If you prefer a more "behind the scenes" opportunity, you can assist with preparation, set up and/or clean up. If you are interested, you can email Dawn Boling at [email protected].

Ash Wednesday Everyone is invited to our prayer room (Room 216) on Ash Wednesday, February 14 any time between 6:00 and 8:00 pm. Either Pastor Tony Alstott or Peter Williams will be available for the imposition of ashes by making the sign of the cross on either your forehead or hand. Wesley Wednesday events will continue as planned without interruption. Those who are taking classes at 6:30 pm may arrive before or after class. Those who are not taking a class on Wednesday may most easily access the prayer room by entering the building from the office entrance and proceeding to Room 216. Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent. We enter into a time of repentance and sacrifice as we look forward to celebration of the crucifixion and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Maundy Thursday Everyone is invited to attend our Maundy Thursday worship service on Thursday, March 29 at 7:00 pm in the Wesley Center. Maundy Thursday is a service that remembers the night before Jesus was crucified. Maundy is from the Latin word that is translated “mandate” or “command” in English. Jesus commanded the disciples to break bread and drink from the fruit of the vine in remembrance of him. On the night before Jesus died he had the Last Supper in the Upper Room. Other events that will be remembered from that night are Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane and his arrest. The message will be “Jesus in Us” based on Jesus’ prayer in John 17 which is also consistent with the 2018 theme of “Christ in You” based on Colossians 1:27. The Traditional Praise Team will lead music.

Good Friday Everyone is invited to attend our Good Friday worship service on Friday, March 30 at 7:00 pm in the Wesley Center. Good Friday is the day we remember Jesus’ death on the cross of Calvary. The message will be from Paul’s explanation to the Colossians about the meaning of the crucifixion entitled, “Hope in the Lamb” from Colossians 1:19-20. The modern worship team will lead music. Easter Sunday Sunrise Service Everyone is invited to attend our Sunrise Service on Easter Sunday, April 1, at 7:00 am in the Chapel. Peter Williams will give the message. The Traditional Worship Team will provide music. Access to the chapel is easiest by following the signs “Office Entrance” and entering the office entrance on the north side of the building.

Wesley Chapel, Thank you for your generous contribution to Team Stocksdale. It was wonderful being with you last month, and we thank you for your wonderful and gracious hospitality. We appreciate the opportunity to share with your church family about our call to Botswana. Thank you for opening your doors to us. Blessings, Corey and Abby

Wesley Chapel, We hope and pray that you are all doing well. Life has been very busy and crazy for us and we wanted give you all an update. We did not make our goal to leave by January, but have seen God’s blessings and patience as He is teaching us and strengthening us for the field. We have faced some trials and have had to figure out how to do life here in the states when our hearts are in Peru. Through these trials and valleys, we have found new strength and faith in God and His promises. He called our family to the mission field even before we were a family and we know we will be leaving April 25 to head to language school in Costa Rica. Our marriage and our family have been strengthened by these past few months and we are excited to raise the last of our funds and get out there where we have been called to go. We have a stronger grip now and look forward to telling you soon that God provided the funds for us to leave. May God bless all of you with an abundance of joy, peace, and love. The Lopps

Easter Worship On April 1, at 8:30 am (traditional) and 9:45 and 11:00 am (modern) worship we will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Easter message will be “Hope of Eternal Life” which will complete the theme of March, “Hope” based on Colossians 1:27 “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Because of the expected large numbers in attendance, we are asking people who normally attend the 11:00 am service to consider attending the 9:45 am service. Your act of hospitality will allow us to have room for the 11:00 am crowd. The theme of 2018 is “Christ in you” taken from Colossians 1:27. The second half of the verse says, “The hope of glory.” In March, Pastor Tony will explore the topic of hope and how it is viewed in different parts of Scripture. April Sermon Series Jesus is fully God and fully human. In April we will explore Jesus as fully God. “Divinity of Jesus” series will begin on Sunday, April 8.
