TRU HCA Certificate Program

27 week program (745 hours) with 4 months theory and 3 months practicums

Designed to prepare the graduate to function, under supervision, as a Health Care Assistant.

On-campus Admissions:  September to March January to July (break March 16 – 20)

March to October (break July 19 – Aug 9)

Offered at the TRU Williams Lake Campus on alternating years

TRU HCA Certificate Program

Graduates receive a Health Care Assistant Certificate from an accredited institution upon program completion

Eligible to be registered with BC Care Aide Registry to work as a HCA

What you learn in the HCA program…..

….learn to provide hands on care to older adults using a

person centered approach

….learn to practice ethically in a responsible and accountable

manner using caring and respectful communication skills.

….learn think critically and creatively to meet the varying needs

of people you care for and to work effectively as a team

member.

….learn to assist the older adult in meeting his/her basic

physical, emotional, environmental and social needs.

….learn to provide practical assistance to help maintain the

client's maximum independence within the limits of his/her

ability.

TRU HCA Curriculum

HCA program follows the BC HCA Provincial Curriculum

Full-time program with a required 90% attendance

Expect approximately 1-2 hours of homework per night

9 separate courses Passing grade is 70%

Course work consists of quizzes, exams, written and oral assignments

Course Schedule: (times may vary) Mainly Monday to Friday

Classroom lectures: 8, 8:30, 9 am –2:30, 3, 3:30 pm - 5/6 hours/day

TRU HCA Curriculum

Practice Skills:

Personal care skills (bedmaking, bedbath, etc.) are demonstrated, practiced and tested in the Nursing Lab

Skills practiced and tested in facility with instructor-led groups

Skills are graded in the nursing lab and clinical setting as pass/complete (COM grade) or unsuccessful/fail (NCG grade- No Credit Given)

Clinical Practice:

Residential Care, Home Support & Assisted Living

Residential care facilities: Shifts will be a combination of day shifts 7am – 3 pm and evening shifts 2 — 10 pm

Home Support/Assisted Living: Times vary between 6 AM to 10 PM (some split

shifts, no more than 8 hours/day) Students responsible for your own

transportation during this experience.

HCA Program Fees

TRU FEES PROGRAM FEES

Tuition (approximately) $3,500.00 - $4000.00

Additional TRU Fees: Ancillary Fee, Athletic and Recreation Fee, the Comprehensive University Enhancement Fee, Building Fund Fee, & applicable Lab/Studio Fees.

HCA Admission Requirements

Educational Requirements BC Grade 11 - minimum (Grade 12 preferred)

Satisfactory completion of English Assessment - Accuplacer Test at (Grade XI level) Required results: Comprehension – 65 Sentence Skill – 60 Write Placer – 4

Strongly Recommended: Volunteering or experience working with the elderly

HCA Application Process Submit your application online through the ApplyBC website

or use the TRU Applciation form at http://www.tru.ca/admissions/apply.html

Pay the $27.03 application feeNote: If you do not pay the application fee online, you must send payment to

TRU Admissions (include your ApplyBC application # with payment). Your application is not processed until the application fee

is received.

Submit official high school transcripts.

Provide official transcripts for any Post-Secondary Institutions previously or currently attended.

Admission Process

Students accepted to the program will receive a Seat Offer Letter

You are required to pay a $500.00 Commitment Fee

Payment must be made by the date indicated on the letter to secure your seat.

Payment is held as deposit towards tuition fees, the balance for any outstanding tuition is due and payable prior to the start of class.

A BC Ministry of Justice Criminal Record Check - please be advised that a criminal record may limit practicum placement and prevent program completion
