Sweethearts of Grace Lutheran

Russ & Kathy Jenks are the longest married sweethearts at Grace Lutheran. They

have been married seventyone years! When asked what their secret was they re-

plied with two pieces of advice. Kathy recalled the advice the minister gave them

when they were married, “Never go to bed angry with one another.” Russ’ words of

wisdom are “Always give your wife her way.” Overall Kathy said “Love one an-

other.” It doesn’t get any simpler than that. It has worked for Russ & Kathy for

seventyone years.

Lenten Soup Lunch

Come and join us for a warm

bowl of soup, the best in town.

Soup meals will begin on Ash Wed.

March 6, and continue through April

10. The Fellowship Committee will host the

first meal (11:30 am) but cannot commit to

hosting every week so your help is desperately

needed. Please prayerfully consider being a

meal coordinator for one week. This can be an indi-

vidual, a group, or a family. The responsibilities in-

clude making sure that the signup sheet is filled in for

supplies, soup, and kitchen workers for the assigned

week. This person/group/family will oversee the en-

tire meal, including setup and cleanup of the meal.

Signup sheets are posted in the Gathering Area.

Please prayerfully consider providing the needed sup-

plies, soup, or joining the kitchen crew. Soup chefs, if

you sign up for meatless soup, please be sure to bring

a soup without meat. Thank you.

Lunch will start being served at 11:30. If this

time is too early for your schedule, please come as

soon as possible before noon. This will allow time for

the kitchen crew to clean up before the start of the

church service. Kitchen workers should plan on stay-

ing until the cleanup is completed so that all helpers

can attend the church service.

After Ash Wednesday, lunch will start at

11:30 and will be served only if someone

signs up to be the meal coordinator for the

day. Please give some thought to leading the efforts for just

one day. You can count on all volunteers to help as needed.

2019 First Communion All Children Welcome

Any baptized child showing desire to receive Jesus in Holy Communion is welcome to come to First Commun-

ion preparation! Please speak with Pastor Mark or Patti Gaedtke, Director of Children’s Ministries, if you have

questions about your child’s readiness for Holy Communion.

Which children/youth?

Fifth grade is recognized as a natural time for preparing for Holy Communion. Children begin thinking

about sin and death at this age and are able to understand concepts and actions taught in this preparation.

Younger children showing desire to receive Communion are welcome to come to this preparation! God’s

grace and children are indefinable mysteries. Anyone baptized is welcome at the Lord’s Table. All we ask is

to have this preparatory conversation before their First Communion.

Older children and youth or adults, who have not received this preparatory teaching, are urged to come!

God’s grace is too amazing to miss. Please contact Pastor Ziemer or Patti Gaedtke if you think this may not

fit you or if you have questions.

Must parents come along?

It is crucial for parents to attend with all children and youth up to 16yearsold. Godparents and grandparents

may also attend and/or substitute when parents have work conflicts. Incorporating forgiveness and rituals of

forgiveness is a key part of this preparatory conversation.

Thank you to one and all!

Once again we have been blessed with a successful

Cookie Walk, Lefse, and Craft Sale. It takes many

helping hands to make this event take place and

God has looked favorably on us. We had a net in-

come of about $3800 which is wonderful. Dis-

bursements went as follows: $2300 Reiff Hall reno-

vation, $1000 Debt reduction, $200 lefse plugs for

griddles, and enough for four new card tables for

the church. Again, everyone who helped in the vari-

ous and many ways, thank you so much! May you

all have a blessed 2019. See you come December

(14

Event & Fundraiser Form

Please remember to fill out this form before you plan

your event and/or fundraiser. This is important for

many reasons; the top three are:

1. Conflicts with other activities/events

2. Lead personmust have one for every event

3. Space or room availability for your event

If there should be a conflict, preference will be given

to the group/committee/person that filled out the

form and reserved the room/area.

Four P’s that Mislead us

Personal appearance

Performance

Popularity

Possessions

These four “P’s” do not just mislead us, they destroy us. The more we are taken in by any

one of them, the more vain, judgmental, and shallow we become.

The “Four P’s” were the first message at the Youth Quake. Sixteen of our youth and five adults attended in Janu-

ary at the Dells. Tiger McLuen was the speaker. He emphasized that many things in life mislead us. They sound

wonderful. But they leave us empty. There is only one that truly fills our soul. Everything else measures us and

only sees us on the outside. There is only one from whom we authentically and always know that we are

claimed, loved, and valued. *

But all these four “P’s” are in fact exactly what all of us want for ourselves. And we pour everything that we can

into making sure our children and our grandchildren have this. We want them to be good looking, successful,

with many friends and everything they need and more.

Think of all the time, money and presents we lavish on our children and grandchildren and the inheritance we

give them so that they have enough. Think of the time we spend attending their events, watching them perform,

and the money poured into tournaments, travel, and training. Think of the attention devoted to our appearance

because of the haunting fears that we may not be attractive or good looking or properly dressed. Speaking of

haunting, nothing so haunts us as the bullying or teasing received from someone we wanted to like us and, even

worse, when others join in the laughter at our expense.

“Wide and easy is the road that leads to destruction,” we know that. But possessions, popularity, performance,

personal appearance feels so necessary. Plus, it takes lots of work to have any of these. If we are working hard, if

we are very devoted to getting it, isn’t hard work and devotion good?

Read the road sign! The heavy trafficked highway of life has many lanes. There is the performance lane, the

popular lane, the personal appearance lane, and the possession lane. But it is all one great Interstate highway

marked “I” for short “I” and all those I love must be faster, better, shinier than you and everyone else. Other-

wise I have no worth! We are all barreling full speed ahead totally enthralled and focused on nothing but our

own image, success, friends and all we want. Oh, the jealousy and even rage that can surface when others get

ahead of us!

*******************

Now you know why Grace so strongly promotes Quake and Waypost Week, Via de Cristo, Sunday Smorgasbord,

Sunday School, GLOW (Grace Lutheran on Wednesdays), Confirmation, Tuesday studies, First Wednesdays for

all ages, Lent Wednesdays; visits to Greater Galilee, Lekubu, and Guatemala; and Service, Wilderness, and Col-

lege trips.

All of these are about DISCIPLESHIP learning to follow Jesus. We are empty and misled no matter how great

we may appear until and unless we are claimed, loved and valued within. NOT based on our personal appear-

ance, performance, popularity and possessions. BUT based on knowing, trusting, and confident that I am

claimed, loved and valued by the Almighty. AND when this claim, love and worth from and in God comes first,

last, always and deepest.

The above is the key, i.e. being anchored in daily faith practices, in a weekly faithforming community, and in a

life style and lifelong commitment rooted in Jesus. This is the key to a loving, joyfilled life with unshakeable

faith and hope with innerpeace. Storms will come. Every life goal is fleeting and temporary, more than we real-

ize. Age will diminish all we once were. But inside we always know whose we are and that we are forever valued

and loved.

Attend to your personal appearance, for you are beautifully created and valued by God. Perform with joy and

unrestrained, for God is with you and you are gifted and blessed. Let your genuine love for others lead many to

want to be with you but be always loving and forgiving as God is for you. God has claimed you, treasure all you

have as God’s gift as a thankful and generous steward and using it as a blessing for all.

From the Stewardship Committee

Be Imitators of Jesus

God created man and announced His creation to be “very good” (Genesis 1:31), but, because of selfwill and

pride, Adam and Eve sinned, causing man to be separated from God. To bridge that separation, God rescued

us with the greatest gift of all: His very own Son. In Christ, God speaks to us, reaches out to us with for-

giveness, and receives us into fellowship. All we have has been freely given to us, not because of who we are or

what we do, but because of Whose we are. Through faith, we see God’s redemptive grace in Jesus, and we are

motivated to live our lives for Him (Ephesians 2:810).

In Jesus, we see the attributes of God. In Hebrews 1:34 we read, “[The Son] is the radiance of the glory of God

and the exact imprint of His nature, and He upholds the universe by the word of His power. After making

purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior

to angels as the name He has inherited is more excellent than theirs.” God the Father has revealed the light of

His glory in His Son, Jesus. As true man, Jesus lived the life of a perfect steward for the glory of His Heavenly

Father. Just as Jesus put aside his own interests and desires “Not as I will, but as You will” (Matthew

26:39), we are called to be obedient through faith to God’s ways rather than the ways of the world and our own

natures. As God’s stewards, we also receive joy and encouragement in knowing that we are obediently serving

the Lord.

Jesus is always to be our preeminent model for our lives as stewards. We have a Savior Who lived the perfect

life in our places. With an attitude of gratitude and joy in what God in Christ has done for us, we read and

adopt the Apostle Paul’s admonition, “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). Through the

working of the Holy Spirit, our goal is to “Put to death, therefore, what is earthly in you” (Colossians 3:5). By

God’s grace, we fix our eyes on Jesus, Who is the “founder and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). To that

end, we should saturate our minds with the truths in God’s Word rather than the teachings of the world.

“Thanks be to God for His inexpressible gift!”

(2 Corinthians 9:15).

February Special OfferingHuman Trafficking

Did the tragedy and experience of Jayme Closs shock you, move you, alarm, you? There is much you can do. Feb-

ruary’s Special Offering will educate what, why and how this is happening right in our state. The offering will go

to Damascus Road to help victims heal, educate all of us to know what to look for and how to respond, and pro-

vide more trainings, materials, and volunteers to do this.

Human Traffickingis the recruitment, harboring, transporting, obtaining or maintaining of a person by

means of: FORCE(rape, beatings, constraint, confinement, torture), FRAUD(false, or deceptive offers), COER-

CION(threats of serious harm; any threat intended to make victim believe that failure to comply would result in

retaliation) for the purpose of a commercial sex act, or in which the person induced to perform such an act is un-

der 18 years of age.

Damascus Road was founded in 2009 and is dedicated to bring awareness through educating, re-

storing and empowering the abused, and advocating for the prevention and abolition of human trafficking. Da-

mascus Road is 100% trained volunteer run, and 100% funded by your generous donations. No one draws a

wage, so 100% of funds donated directly serve our local communities. We assist victims, conduct training, raise

awareness, partner with law enforcement, and perform outreaches.Damascus Road has worked alongside a na-

tional missing children’s organization, other antitrafficking NGO’s, and local law enforcement, resulting in re-

coveries each year.

More About Human Trafficking

To request help or report suspected human trafficking, call theNational Human Trafficking Re-

source Center hotlineat 18883737888. Or text INFO or HELP to: BeFree (233733).

Lisa Steinholz was exposed firsthand to the horror of human trafficking when she and her husband travelled to

the Philippines to adopt their daughter. During this trip, she learned that children in orphanages and on the

streets as young as the toddler she was bringing home can wind up being trafficked. Lisa returned to Wisconsin

a forever changed person. Over the next years, she poured over the internet looking for a way to travel to places

where trafficking was happening. She wanted to learn, to get involved and to make a difference

Beginning in 2009, trips to Cambodia and Nicaragua allowed Lisa to work with advocates that specialized in in-

ternational rescues. She witnessed heartbreaking situations, but was also part of a movement that brought hope

to people being victimize

Through Lisa'a training, travel, and handson work, her knowledge about trafficking led her to understand that it

is literally happening everywhere. What started in her mind as an "international issue" could no longer be

looked at in this way. Lisa aligned with an organization in Las Vegas and traveled there several times to assist

with outreaches. She pursued education and training, and then brought everything she learned over the years

back to Wisconsin. Today, Damascus Road has grown to have nearly a dozen trained volunteers, and serves vic-

tims in our local communities.

Adults in Global Mission (YAGM) is a oneyear international servicelearning and faithformation opportunity

for young adults, ages 21 to 29.

Like other Christian organizations, YAGM puts much emphasis on assisting young adults to use this to hear

God’s call, grow their faith, and learn much about themselves and life. However YAGM is unique in two ways:

1.) It requires no up front money only what you and your congregation can raise (whatever that is), and 2.) It is

church based rooted in the practices of worship and of the global Lutheran Church.

Young adults serve alongside Lutheran companion church bodies and organizations in one of 11 country pro-

grams, being shaped by the witness of our global neighbors in a crosscultural journey of faith. Australia, Serbia,

Cambodia, Jerusalem/West Bank, Madagascar, Mexico, Rwanda, Senegal and Tanzania.

All site placements provide opportunities for young adults to confront issues of wealth and poverty, racial privi-

lege, economic disparity and globalization through the lens of faith. Applications are open now through Feb. 15,

2019; learn more and apply today at https://elca.org/YAGM.
