An Epic Immigration Journey
The United States is a country of immigrants, and except for
Native Americans, all our ancestors stepped foot into this country
as an immigrant, a stranger in a new and vast land. Many had
little but the shirt on their back and a strange language to learn.
One such inspiring story is from Carlos, which is provided below.
Carlos’ Story: My parents and three siblings arrived in Miami, Florida from Buenos Aires in March 1962. The
entire immigration process lasted seven years: multiple forms, medical exams, several interviews at the U.S.
Embassy, criminal background checks and, most important, work contracts for my parents and a sponsor in
the US to assume financial liabilities for first five years. Our journey from Buenos Aires to Rochester, NY,
where our sponsors lived, lasted one week.
Our sponsors insisted we integrate into American life and learn English rapidly as none of our
neighbors spoke Spanish. I was enrolled in public high school the following Monday morning in all English
classes where I did not understand anything. It was a frustrating and humiliating experience, for I went from
being a good student to a failing student for lack of language skills. Thankfully, this only lasted a few months.
I learned to persevere as my parents shepherded us into a wonderful, new world that changed us forever.
I quickly obtained evening work by shoveling snow from our neighbors’ driveways in the winter and
mowing their yards in the summer. Thus, I was able purchase my own new clothes and school supplies to
start my new life in America.
I recall my parents leaving for work early in the morning, so I helped my two younger siblings get
ready for school. Each family member, in their own way, sacrificed and persevered to adopt to our new
home. I walked to and from school daily and made friends with smiles, listening and practicing my new
language skills with courage and determination.
After graduation, I worked assorted jobs, saved money and enrolled at Community College. I later
transferred to a Catholic College nearby, so I could commute and live at home. Throughout my college years,
I worked full time in the evenings to pay for my tuition and books.
As an immigrant family, America opened its doors and hearts and gave us a dream opportunity for a
better life. With our hard work with an unbridled determination to forge ahead despite language and
financial limitations we succeeded.
~Carlos Palasciano,
Emmaus Liturgy Coordinator
May the Emmaus community reflect the Gospel of Matthew: “For I was hungry, and you gave me food,
I was thirsty, and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me.” Matthew 25:35
