Case Studies

Client: Westfarmers – Curragh

Project location: Blackwater

Project: Levy Batter Soil Amelioration, Stabilisation and Re-vegetation

Area: Originally 25 Hectares with a final area of 28 Hectares

Overview:

The Client contacted Perfect Earth to review the method of re-vegetation to levy batter erosion management and re-

vegetation. The site originally consisted of 25 hectares of batters

with a 1V:3H batter.

The Managing Director of Perfect Earth was flown to the site for an inspection which revealed the following installation from a previous sub-contractor. Hydromulch was applied to the surface then overlaid with Jute

mesh. During the installation of Jute mesh, it was clearly visible

that every footstep taken on the batter had broken the

Hydromulch skin. Every break had caused a weak point which

developed into a major rill, sometimes up to 600mm deep.

Soil amelioration was conducted by Perfect Earth which included soil nutrient analysis, supply of ameliorants and incorporation.

The Opportunity:

Perfect Earth provided the Client with two options for stabilising and re-vegetation;

1. Continue with the same installation methods of Hydromulching, applying Jute mesh, keying in and pinning which Perfect Earth did not recommend.

2. Supplying and applying a bonded fibre Hydromulch (HydroBlanket Plustm) at 5 Tonne per hectare, this is including extruded basalt fibre with a guarantee of successful erosion containment and re-vegetation.

The Client chose the second option which included the saving of $1.83 per m2 over 280,000 m2.

The Outcome:

The satisfied Client has advised Perfect Earth that all Hydromulching conducted will be the same method from here

on.

TOTAL SAVINGS TO THE CLIENT: $512,400

Case Studies – Continued

Client: Moreton Bay Regional Council

Project location: Brendale

Project: Detention Basin Soil Amelioration, Re-vegetation and Irrigation

Area: 6 Hectares

Overview:

The Client had previously opted for installation of tube stock in their commercial detention basin subdivisions. The Client was looking for an alternative to vegetate the detention basins due to the cost of tube stock and the limited diversity of available tube stock at the time.

Perfect Earth was engaged to provide a solution. The Opportunity:

Perfect Earth provided the client with a cost analysis which included the option of native seeding by Hydromulch. The options were as follows:

1. Analysis of the soil nutrients and moisture holding capabilities

2. Amelioration including fully composted organic matter, ameliorants and micro nutrients

3. Native seed recommendations suitable for the low lands as well as the batters

4. Hydromulching (HydroBlanket Plustm) at 5 Tonne per hectare, modified to suit the possibility of constant

inundation thereby gluing the seeds to the soil

5. Installation of above ground irrigation – charged by the water truck

6. 3 years of ongoing maintenance The Outcome:

The site suffered some setbacks as the neighbouring property did not contain storm water therefore large quantities of sediment covered the site. The Client was relieved that tube stock was not installed as a second planting of tube stock would have been required.

Some additional areas required further Hydromulch as the sediment was over 200mm deep. The Client has achieved signoff in the second year with successful native vegetation coverage.

TOTAL SAVINGS TO THE CLIENT BASED ON 2 INSTALLATIONS OF

TUBE STOCK: $368,400

Page | 14

Case Studies – Continued

Client: Non disclosed

Project location: Gold Coast

Project: Offset Detention Basin Native Re-vegetation

Area: 50 Hectares

Overview:

The Client required re-vegetation of a 50 hectare water storage area as an offset to the residential development. Subject to rainfall, the site is at groundwater level with the high possibility of becoming submerged in the wet season. The site was unstable with swamp dozers becoming bogged regularly during the earth works phase.

The Opportunity:

Perfect Earth provided the client with a cost projection which included the option of native seeding by direct seeding. The options were as follows:

1. Success/risk analysis based on the likelihood of inundation

2. Native seed selection suitable to the site and conditions including species suitable for wet and dry seasons

3. Safe installation protocols based on knowledge of swampy site conditions

4. Seed installation - GPS tracking and daily calibration check sheets to provide the client QA information The Outcome:

Post-seeding, the site was inundated by many major rain events. Some of the site remains underwater today.

The client was relieved that tube stock was not installed due to the overall costs and limited success if tube stock were initially installed. As water recedes from the site, wetland species are germinating with an outstanding success rate.

Water is now filtered and the soil is stable. The client is satisfied with the result.

TOTAL SAVINGS TO THE CLIENT BASED ON TUBE STOCK INSTALLATION COMPARED TO

SEEDING: $1,300,000

Case Studies – Continued

Client: Non disclosed

Project location: Caboolture – Bruce Highway

Project: Main Roads Upgrade

Area: 27 Hectares

Overview:

Perfect Earth had quoted for the soil amelioration and re-vegetation for this project however were unsuccessful due to the price. The client called the Managing Director of Perfect Earth to request a site visit 3 months later. The site visit identified issues as follows:

Poor establishment of vegetation

Large quantity of weed species

Yellowing of foliage on established vegetation The Opportunity:

Perfect Earth undertook a vegetation assessment based on photographic logs and measurable parameters. After supplying this to the Client, the Client requested recommendations and a quotation to repair the poorly established areas. The recommendations included the following:

Soil nutrient analysis followed by soil amelioration recommendations

Hydromulching including additional seed as concern was raised by Perfect Earth as to the low Mother Crop

quantities not providing soil stabilisation

Establishment including watering, weeding and slashing

The Outcome:

The Client undertook Perfect Earth’s recommendations and engaged Perfect Earth. Perfect Earth provided a guarantee of vegetation performance.

The site is now stable with a minimum of 90% coverage.

TOTAL POTENTIAL SAVINGS TO THE CLIENT IF PERFECT EARTH HAD INITIALLY

UNDERTAKEN THE PROJECT: $1,485,000
