JOY TO THE WORLD...

I call it Joy, which is here a technical term and must be sharply distinguished both from Happiness and Pleasure. Joy (in my sense) has indeed one characteristic, and one only, in common with them; the fact that anyone who has experienced it will want it again... I doubt whether anyone who has tasted it would ever, if both were in his power, exchange it for all the pleasures in the world. But then Joy is never in our power and Pleasure often is.”

C.S. Lewis, Surprised by Joy: The Shape of My Early Life

THE ___________________________OF JOY VS. THE _________________ OF HAPPINESS

“I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people.” Luke 2:10

#gosharethejoyAll month long, we’ll be remembering our source of JOY as we await Jesus’ birth. We’re encouraging you to think of ways you can share the joy in your home, your workplace, your neighborhood, and out in the world! Right here at Hosanna! you can share your joy by using your camera phone to snap a photo at a photo booth in the atrium! Consider posting your photo online with #gosharethejoy. Let’s go share the joy!

SERMONNOTES

JOY TO THE WORLDWEEK 1 PRACTICING JOY

JOY TO THE WORLDThe angels declared it: “Behold! We bring you good news of great JOY, which will be to all people.” The birth of Jesus set an eternal party in motion. This Christmas at Hosanna!, we’ll remember that the birth of Jesus is our source of deep and sustaining joy, no matter life’s circumstances. Together, we’ll join the angels singing: “Joy to the world, the Lord has come!”

THIS WEEK’S QUESTIONS FOR FURTHER REFLECTION1. What experiences or images bring

you a touch of joy?

2. Why don’t most things in life satisfy our longing for true joy?

3. How are joy and happiness the same? How are they different?

4. Why can it be said that only Jesus brings true joy? What is this joy based on?

5. How will you practice joy this Advent season? How will you share it?
