Scripture Corner:
FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
First Reading: Acts 6:1‑7 During the early growth of the Church, the apostles real-ized that they needed more disciples in order to carry out effectively the ministry of the Church. The community selected seven men, one of whom was Stephen. Second Reading: 1 Peter 2:4‑9 Citing many uses of the word “stone” in the sayings of Jesus and in the Old Testament, Peter urges the Chris-tians to be “living stones...an edifice of spirit.” Gospel: John 14:1‑12 In this beautiful passage from the words of Jesus at the Last Supper, Jesus promises that he is preparing a place for the apostles. He tells them, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me.” When Philip asks Jesus to show them the Father, Jesus answers, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Fa-ther.”

The first act of the apostles after the Ascension of Jesus was to find a re-placement for Judas, as read in the Acts of the Apostles chapter 1, verses 15-26. Why was this so important? Remember that the number twelve was a very im-portant number to the chosen people, twelve was the number of the tribes of Israel. If the new Israel was to come from the disciples of Jesus, a twelfth apostle was needed. One hundred twenty people were gathered for prayer in the upper room when Peter spoke to them about the one criterion for the new apostle. He must be a disciple of Jesus from the very beginning so that he could be a true witness to the teachings of Jesus and His Resurrection. Two men qualified in this way so it was necessary to determine which had the heart to be a true witness. Knowing that only God can be a true judge of the heart, they cast lots to determine the will of God. Matthias was chosen. Beyond this, the information about St. Matthias is con-flicting. According to tradition, he is considered to have made a memorable statement regarding vices of the flesh. "We must combat the flesh, taking what advantages we can without giving it blameworthy delights. Regarding the soul, we should develop it through intelligence and faith." He advocated taking advantage of the correct tendencies of the flesh while avoiding making any con-cessions to what is evil. St. Matthias counseled towards a balanced attitude toward life, in direct opposition to the unbalanced craving of money which belonged to Judas. Various legends exist about his death, including both stoning and beheading. Images of St. Matthias portray him holding an ax at times which reflects the beheading story. St. Matthias is considered to be the patron saint of carpenters and tailors. His Feast Day is celebrated on May 14, changed to this date in the 1969 reform of the Calendar of Saints, so that his feast would be celebrated closer to the Feast of the Ascension.
Happy Mother’s Day! Fr. Duff, Fr. Vincent, Fr. Aloysius, Deacon George, and the staff of St. Marys would like to wish all our parish mothers a Blessed, Happy, Mother’s Day!
Happy Mother’s
Day
From the Desk of Fr. Duff
Mother’s Day
Most loves have mixed with them some base metal but the love of a good Mother is just pure gold. All of us have a kind of built-in selfishness. We are willing to serve but we expect to be paid. Like St. Peter himself, we ask, “What is in it for me?” Nobody can explain a mother’s willingness to sacrifice except to say that she loves. A mother is self sacrifice with a smudge on her cheek. She is wisdom with a wisp of straggling hair. She is sanctity behind an apron. She is an angel with a broom in her hand and a judge with a gavel needed to restore order in the court. What a marvelous dignity and disposition God has endowed her with. Is it any wonder that by God’s design she is the frail bridge that swings between time and eternity as the mystery of life renews itself, as a tiny traveler safe in her womb makes his way to Earth and matures in age and grace. To God, a child is a blessing, a blessing of untold value that He en-trusts to a mother. But the mad world today tells us that, well, more than two blessings is a curse. How many of us would not be here if that is what our mothers thought of us. Mother gives her blood to make us, her milk to nourish us, her sweat to rear us, her tears to keep us good and close to God. She risks her life to bear us and spends her life bearing with us. As we grow up, she grows old. As we grow stronger, she grows weaker. As we become more and more involved in our own life’s work, she is more and more alone. Yet, not alone, but always with us in everything we do. She shares our every triumph and success, she suffers in our least set back and defeat, she understands when no one else would take the time. The love of a good mother is in obvious contrast to the selfishness of today’s world. In a world whose chief god is self pleasure, it is both a paradox and an inspiration to witness a mother’s self-sacrificing love. The world dances around self-pleasure, like the people once danced around the golden calf, but thank God we have mothers who show us that happiness is in giving, that there is real joy in sacrificing for those we love as a mother does. Blessed Mother’s Day.
Thank you for all you do,
Fr. Duff

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.
In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks
on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
