From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners, Pope Francis often speaks of his experience within his family and does not fail to “sprinkle” so many of his homilies and speeches with antidotes about his own mother and grandmother. I thought I would share with you a few of the pontiff’s quotes about mothers so appropriate for today’s observance. To be a mother is a great treasure. Mothers, in their

unconditional and sacrificial love for their children, are the antidote to individualism; they are the greatest enemies against war.

Despite all of the symbolic glorification we give to mother-hood, it is still under-valued.

All of us give credit to our mothers for life and many other things, but not always are they listened to or helped in everyday life…Their important contribution to the life of society, their daily sacrifices and their aspirations are not always properly appreciated.

To be a mother is a gift. Through their sacrifices, mothers assist in helping society to overcome its self-centered tendencies, as well as its lack of openness, generosity and concern for others.

Motherhood is more than childbearing; it is a life choice entailing sacrifice, respect for life, and commitment to passing on those human and religious values which are essential for a healthy society.

It is they, mothers, who often give the first roots of the faith, the ones that permeate deepest; without them not only would the faithful be lost, but also a good part of the deepest fire of our faith.

May we always appreciate the gift of our mothers. Today we salute them and offer our prayers for them. May they always know our love and prayers.

A Blessed and Joyful Mother’s Day! With affection, Msgr. Gervasio

Nan panse mwen, mwen ta renmen pataje avek w kek pwent Pontif la rakonte konsenan manman yo ki si apwopriye pou obsevans jodia. Yon manman se yon gwo trezo. Manman yo, nan renmen

Malgre tout siyifikasyon senbolik ke nou bay a la matenite, yo pa bayo vale yo merite.

The Holy Father, Pope Francis, Grants Plenary Indulgence For Our Lady of Fatima Centennial

Pope Francis has granted the opportunity for the faithful to obtain a plenary indulgence* in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Fatima apparitions during the centennial year—November 27, 2016-November 26, 2017. There are three ways to obtain the plenary indulgence: 1. Make a pilgrimage to the Fatima Shrine in Portugal

Pilgrims to the Shrine in Portugal are to participate in a celebration of prayer dedicated to the Virgin and also pray the Our Father, recite the Creed and invoke the Virgin Mary.

2. Pray before any Image of Our Lady of Fatima Those who visit with devotion an image of Our Lady of Fatima solemnly exposed for public veneration in any church, oratory or proper place during the days of the anniversary of the apparitions, the 13th of each month from May to October 2017, and there devoutly participate in some celebration or prayer in honor of the Virgin Mary, must also pray the Our Father, recite the Creed and invoke Our Lady of Fatima.

3. The elderly and infirm To the faithful who, because of age, illness, or other serious cause, are unable to get around, may pray before an image of Our Lady of Fatima and must spiritually unite themselves to the jubilee celebrations on the days of the apparitions, the 13th of each month, between May and October 2017. They must also confidently offer to God through Mary, their prayers, sufferings, or the sacrifices they make in their own lives. The faithful who follow one of these three ways must also fulfill the ordinary conditions:

Go to Confession and Communion Be interiorly detached from sin Pray for the intentions of the Pope (Creed, the Our Father, Hail Mary, & Glory Be)

* "An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints." (Canon 992 and Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1471) A plenary indulgence is a complete remission of temporal punishment due to sins and is limited to one per day.

An image of Our Lady of Fatima will be exposed

at the Altar of Our Lady (SAC) and at the Shrine of Our Lady (OLS)

during the Centennial.

Respect & Care for the Lord’s House

Please use the pew missal holders for our “Breaking Bread” missal/hymnals only. The holder is not intended for bulletins, soiled tissues, gum and/or candy wrappers, etc. Our regard for the Lord’s house should make us attentive to its care and good order. Moreover, consuming gum or candy in church is not only inappropriate but breaks the required Eucharistic fast before Holy Communion. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.

News from Your Parish School No matter where we roam, there is no place like home! How often have we heard these familiar words? We had just such an event on Monday, May 8, when two of our own proud graduates visited the middle school Science classes. Marie Kosco-Vilbois ('72) and Patti Kosco Cossard ('73) shared their world of science with our students. The OLS students received an eye into the world of working research scientists. The children learned how the valuable lessons Marie and Patti learned here at Our Lady of Sorrows School prepared them

for the world of higher education and for their work with medical and environmental scientific research. The comments these two outstanding graduates sent to our Science Coordinator, Ann-Margaret Emde (OLS Graduate and Faculty!)

summarizes their reaction to visiting our classrooms: "Thank you for the invitation. We enjoyed the experience and there were such great questions! You, as educators, have done well as not only do the students embrace the sciences but are well mannered and polite. We are proud of our alma mater! The OLS tradition continues..." One particular audience member was surely beaming during the presentations: John Kosco (parishioner and School Board Member) smiled broadly as he enjoyed listening to his two daughters give back to the school they love—Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School! Thank you John, Marie, and Patti Kosco!

Pictured from top are: Patti Kosco Cossard, a librarian at the University of Maryland who’s involved in a contest to build an environmental residence; medical research scientist Marie Kosco-Vilbois with an interested student; students enjoying learning more about research science; and John Kosco with his daughters.

Eucharistic Adoration

Our faith teaches us that Jesus remains present in his Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, in the Sacrament that is reserved in the tabernacle.

Thursdays Are Days of Solemn Adoration The Blessed Sacrament will be placed upon the altar following the 7 a.m. Mass until Reposition at 6 p.m. All are invited to answer the Lord’s call…He wants us give Him the gift of our time. He wants us to come to Him bringing our needs, anxieties, joys, and thanks. Our Lady of Sorrows Church also is open during our office hours. Why not stop for even a brief moment to rejoice in the Lord’s Presence?

Remember those Less Fortunate A life not lived for others is not a life. St Teresa of Kolkata

We have the opportunity to assist the needy within our own parish through the donations you make to the St. Vincent DePaul Conference. At Saint Anthony Church—Permanent “Poor Boxes” are

found at the doors of the church. At Our Lady of Sorrows Church—A collection is taken up on

the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month. Green donation containers are found at the church doors.

Donations may also be made by placing a gift in the collection basket along with your parish contribution. It should be in a separate envelope that is clearly marked Poor Box. Checks should be made payable to OLS-St Anthony.

Faith in Our Future Lord Jesus Christ, Word of the Father, we turn to you. Watch over our plans. Enliven our service to the Church. Sustain our labors. Guide our steps in search of the best ways to proclaim your Gospel. Our poverty is great. We do not place trust in ourselves but only in you. Encourage us, reassure us, give us your blessing. You, who with the Holy Spirit, live and reign in us and in your Church forever and ever. Amen. ...TO OUR BULLETIN ADVERTISERS! Because of

the generosity and support of those businesses and individuals who purchase advertising space on the back cover of our bulletin, we are able to save money as we provide you with news and information

about your parish and your faith. Take a look at the ads that run every week, and patronize our advertisers—and when you do, please let them know that you are patronizing them because you saw their ads in our bulletin, and thank them personally for supporting our parish community!

Married Couples

If we love each other, God lives in us, and His love has been brought to full expression through us. 1 John 4:12
