The Virtual Loaner Program (VLP) - Remote Resources
The Virtual Loaner Program:
– VLP is an On-Demand self-service web-based, cross-platform, NO cost, worldwide, remote platform access offering targeted to SMB business partners delivered through PartnerWorld.
– VLP's user environment provides easy to use, on demand, secure, multi-tier, repeated use support for business partner development, functional test, and demo.
– Helps partners enjoy complete control while developing solutions
© 2007 IBM Corporation
VLP Usage Model Conceptually a "Virtual Loaner" System consists of:
– Multiple short login sessions as needed instead of month-long engagements– a user-friendly remote system that "remembers" the user’s state from session to session
• User returns days, weeks, or months later, can get same type of system, same environment, including all files and work in progress.
What can VLP be used for:– Development, Testing, Debug, Porting, Product Demonstration, Evaluation of IBM HW and
or SW (including some early program OS and SW), Limited Sizing (see how your product performs differently with varying amounts of CPU and RAM).
What VLP can NOT be used for:– BenchMarks, activities that require adding HW (other than CPU, RAM, DISK) or require
access to the HMC or other VLP infrastructure, commercial production use, resale of service, or any purpose for which user receives a fee, Internet distributed computing (seti@home, folding@home), running of internet servers such as game servers, peer-to-peer file sharing, denial of service attacks, sending unsolicited emails, cracking utilities, or any of the prohibited activities listed in the agreement rules attachment.
© 2007 IBM Corporation
VLP Usage Model (continued) Single Sign-On
– Users access system through web portal and VPN backbone– Users login and describe / select the desired system configuration
Selectable Access to Multiple Hardware & OS Configurations – Logical partition or system boots from stored system image– User can customize the system image, save and restore
Free access to IBM Software Access Catalog from AIX and Linux partitions – i5/OS middleware contained on /stage/middleware/i5OS directory
Full Access to User’s Own Data / Build Environment
– Secure access to User’s own filesystems or code repository through SSH or VPN– Also provide persistent storage in the hosted environment for long-term (project-term)
storage of User files and virtual server images– Systems are "scrubbed" of any User data before being returned to idle state
Dedicated (full root access, QSECOFR) Systems– Root access/QSECOFR = full admin control: change OS level, install software, etc...

Security Considerations
Security is paramount for system with stored User data VLP provides a “commercially reasonable efforts” guarantee of secure
environment– IES-certified remote access environment
• Supplemented with firewalls
– Virtual Servers on private network behind firewall – no direct access / public IP address
– Access through Virtual Private Network / SSH gateway
• Protect User’s IP in transit
– Single-use passwords / credentials
• Users only have access when they have an active reservation
– Scrubbing of systems between Users – provisioning with “clean” OS
– Infrastructure systems monitoring
– Periodic vulnerability testing

Virtual Loaner Program User Benefits
Reduced Developer and Integrator costs, by providing high-function hardware access without the associated costs of on-site physical servers — floor space, power, cooling, network, sysadmin headcount, etc.
Access to a broad range of hardware systems, including larger and better-configured systems than most Developer and Integrators have available on-site.
Flexibility to work with multiple system configurations, operating systems (OSes), and OS levels, without requiring multiple physical servers.
Data security through use of current technologies such as VPN and AES encryption.

Points to keep in mind regarding the program
Our sizing guide program is NOT limited to a single environment, single application, single partition, single time-frame or single system.
It DOES consider virtualization including Dynamic LPAR overhead, virtual I/O and resource allocation and reallocation and processor on demand.
Its interfaces to other tools allowing automated input of current usage data and passing recommendations to order entry and build systems including LPAR setup.
