You will find important safetyinformation in this supplement andin the owner’s manual. Thisinformation alerts you to potentialhazards that could hurt you or others. Please read it carefully.
Your Civic GX operates andperforms like a gasoline-poweredCivic. However, there are a fewdifferences you should be aware of.In addition to reading the CivicSedan owner’s manual, please readthis supplement carefully tounderstand the operation and uniquefeatures of your Civic GX.
Your Civic GX runs on compressednatural gas (CNG), a highlypressurized version of the sameclean-burning natural gas used inmany homes.

This indicator will also come on ifthere is a problem in the fuel system. If this happens, have the vehiclechecked by an authorized HondaCivic GX dealer as soon as possible.Drive moderately until the dealer hasinspected the problem. Avoid full-throttle acceleration and driving athigh speed.
This indicator comes on for a fewseconds when you turn the ignitionswitch to the ON (II) position. If itcomes on at any other time, itindicates one of the engine’semissions control systems may havea problem. For complete information, refer to the Civic Sedan owner’smanual.

If you smell natural gas or hear ahissing sound, except when refueling, the fuel system may have a leak.Follow the instructions under
on pageof this supplement.
This indicator comes on for a fewseconds when you turn the ignitionswitch to the ON (II) position. It alsocomes on as a reminder that youmust refuel soon. The approximatedriving distance remaining when thisindicator comes on is:
City driving 20--25 milesHighway driving 25--30 miles
If this indicator starts blinking andthe fuel level reading goes down toempty when the engine is running, itindicates a problem in the fuelsystem. Have the vehicle checked byan authorized Honda Civic GX dealeras soon as possible.
As the temperature of the outside aircools, the temperature inside the
tank begins to drop, and thepressure inside the tank drops too. This means that when the outside airgets very cold [below 25°F ( 4°C)],the pressure of the natural gas insidethe tank goes down, and the fuelgauge may indicate that you haveless fuel than what actually remainsin the tank. Keep this in mind if thelow fuel indicator comes on whileyou are driving in cold weather.

This gauge shows how much fuelyou have. The quantity of fuelremaining in the tank is calculatedbased on the pressure andtemperature of the natural gas in thefuel tank.
The lower ‘‘F’’ mark indicates a fulltank at a fill pressure of 3,000 psi.
The upper ‘‘F’’ mark indicates a fulltank at a fill pressure of 3,600 psi.
Unlike the standard Civic, the seat-back cannot be folded down.
The gauge may show slightly moreor less than the actual amount. Thetank temperature, fill method, andambient conditions may affect thepressure and temperature of thenatural gas.

If you use a fuel that does not meetthese standards, you may feel adecrease in engine power and yourvehicle’s emissions controls may bedamaged.
The main component of compressednatural gas is methane, a highlyflammable, colorless gas. While it isthe same gas that is burned ineveryday home appliances such askitchen stoves and water heaters, the CNG in your vehicle is storedunder high pressure (maximum3,600 psi/24,800 kPa).
Your Civic GX is designed to operateon compressed natural gas (CNG).The natural gas you use to refuelmust meet NFPA-52 and SAE J1616standards for fuel composition andquality.
The CNG system in your vehicle, including the tank and hoses, hasbeen designed to hold gas at thispressure. It has also been tested forsafety. You should never smell gasor hear a hissing sound unless youare refueling. If you smell gas orhear a hissing sound at any othertime, you need to shut down theCNG system. Follow the instructionson page .12
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)
Fuel
Before Driving6
Compressed natural gas isflammable and highly explosive. You could be killed or seriouslyinjured if leaking natural gas isignited.
If you suspect a leak, have yourvehicle immediately inspectedand repaired by an authorizedHonda Civic GX dealer.
06/08/10 20:16:37 31SNF910 0007
Your vehicle has an identifying‘‘CNG’’ label attached next to therear license plate. Do not removethis label. This label is necessary forinsuring your vehicle. Drivingwithout this label may violate thelaws or regulations in some states.
There are two methods of refueling, fast filling or slow filling.
Fast filling is normally used in fuelstations for natural gas vehicles. Ittakes about 3 to 5 minutes to fill upthe fuel tank.
Slow filling is done with a vehiclerefueling appliance. Refueling takesabout 1 hour per gasoline gallonequivalent.
Always observe all safetyrecommendations and operatinginstructions on the refuelingequipment.
When refueling, you should use afuel fill nozzle that complies withANSI/AGA NGV-1-1994 standards.Nozzles are designed according totheir maximum fill pressure: P24 for2,400 psi (pounds per square inch),P30 for 3,000 psi, and P36 for 3,600psi.
Your vehicle’s maximum fill pressureis 3,600 psi (24,800 kPa), so youshould refuel with a P36 nozzle.Using a P30 nozzle will fill the tankto the second (3,000 psi) fill mark onthe fuel gauge. Using a P24 nozzlewill not fill the tank completely.
During a fast fill, the natural gas iswarmed by the refueling process. This causes the pressure in the tankto rise and reduces the amount offuel you can put in.
The label shown below is attached tothe fuel receptacle lid.

The maximum load for your vehicleis 850 lbs or 385 kg. This figureincludes the total weight of alloccupants, cargo, and accessories.
Determine the combined weightof the driver and passengersthat will be riding in yourvehicle.
Subtract the combined weightof the driver and passengersfrom 850 pounds or 385kilograms.
Steps for Determining Correct LoadLimit
Locate the statement ‘‘thecombined weight of ocupantsand cargo should never exceed850 pounds’’ on your vehicle’splacard. [The pacard is on thedriver’s doorjamb.]
The resulting figure equals theavailable amount of cargo andluggage load capacity. For example, if the amountequals 850 lbs, and there will befive 150 lb. passengers in your
vehicle, the amount of availablecargo and luggage load capacityis 100 lbs.(850 750 (5 150) = 100 lbs.)
Determine the combined weightof luggage and cargo beingloaded on the vehicle. Thatweight may not safely exceedthe available cargo and luggageload capacity calculated in Step4.
In addition, the total weight of thevehicle, all occupants, accessoriesand cargo must not exceed the grossvehicle weight rating (GVWR) or thegross axle weight rating (GAWR).Both are on a label on the driver’sdoorjamb.

In cold weather, turn off allelectrical accessories to reducethe drain on the battery.
Make sure the shift lever is inPark. Press on the brake pedal.
Turn the ignition switch to theSTART (III) position. Do not holdthe switch in the START (III)position for more than 15 secondsat a time. If the engine does notstart right away, pause for at least10 seconds before trying again.
Without touching the acceleratorpedal, turn the ignition switch tothe ON (II) position. You may heara click from the in-tank fuelshutoff valve.
Make sure the malfunctionindicator lamp goes out before youturn the ignition switch to theSTART (III) position.
The fuel tank is located in the trunk, with a partition between the fueltank and the cargo space.
When you store small items in thetrunk, secure them so they will notshift while you are driving. Looseitems can fly over the partition anddamage the fuel tank and fuelsystem components.
Do not carry large, heavy, or pointedobjects in the trunk. They maydamage the fuel tank.
If the outside temperature is below4°F ( 20°C), the engine may be
harder to start or may not start untiltemperatures increase. In this case, use the starting procedure for coldweather at high altitude describednext.

Your vehicle is not designed to tow atrailer; attempting to do so can voidyour warranties.
Also, when driving in very coldweather, make sure that the 12 Vbattery is fully charged either bydriving several miles each day or byusing a 12 V charger to fully chargethe battery.
An engine is harder to start in coldweather. The thinner air found athigh altitude above 5,000 feet (1,600meters) adds to the problem. The unique design of a CNG enginemakes it even more difficult orimpossible to start if temperaturesdrop below 4°F ( 16°C).
If you regularly drive your vehicle invery cold weather [below 4°F( 20°C)], consider having anengine block heater installed. Itshould greatly improve starting invery cold weather.
If the engine fails to start in step 3,push the accelerator pedal to thefloor and hold it there while youtry to start the engine for no morethan 15 seconds. If the enginedoes not start, return to step 3.
Push the accelerator pedal half-way to the floor and hold it therewhile starting the engine. Do nothold the ignition switch in theSTART (III) position for morethan 15 seconds. When the enginestarts, release the acceleratorpedal gradually as the enginespeeds up and smooths out.
Make sure the malfunctionindicator lamp goes out before youturn the ignition switch to theSTART (III) position.
Turn off all electrical accessoriesto reduce the drain on the battery.

However, service at a dealer is notmandatory to keep your warrantiesin effect. Maintenance may be doneby any qualified service facility orperson who is skilled in this type ofautomotive service. Make sure tohave the service facility or personreset the display as previouslydescribed. Keep all receipts as proofof completion, and have the personwho does the work fill out themaintenance record or the Hondaservice history booklet. Check yourwarranty booklet for moreinformation. When the remaining engine oil life is
5 to 1 percent, you will see a‘‘SERVICE OIL LIFE’’ messagealong with the same maintenanceitem code(s), every time you turn theignition switch to the ON (II)position.
