Shasta Commandery #17Knights Templar

This month marks the anniversary of the martyrdom of Jacques de Molay the last Grand Master of the ancient Poor Fellow Soldiers of Christ and the Temple of Solomon, or the Knights Templar. On March 17th in 1314, the King of France, Philip the Fair, in collusion with his cousin Pope Clement, had DeMolay burned at the stake. De Molay’s offence was to remain true to his beliefs. The origins of the Masonic Knights Templar are obscure. Organized Masonic Templary, it seems, dates from the mid-dle of the 18th century, perhaps a little earlier. There is no true evidence connecting the Knights Templar of the 12 and 13 hundreds with the modern Knight Templar of today ex-cept for the emulation by us of the moral and civil practices of those who came before us. Although some today continue to find the origins of Freemasonry among the remnants of the medieval Tem-plars, there is no provable connection between the two. Freemasonry’s connection to the crusader knights is moral and commemorative rather than historical. We seek to per-petuate the principal values reflected in medieval Templar ideals: integrity, courage, obedience, and devotion to the Christian religion. The way that I describe the difference is that Jacques DeMolay was a Knight Templar, I am a Knights Templar or a Knight that is Templar. While Masonic Templary has taken various forms since the mid 18th century, today’s Commandery Orders repre-sent a new direction of Masonic thought and experience, in that they no longer refer to Ancient Craft Masonry, but to ideals and practices of chivalry and Christianity. The first Commandery Order, the Illustrious Order of the Red Cross, presents the story of the Jewish Prince, Zerubbabel, and his efforts to secure permission of the Persian King Darius to re-build the second temple at Jerusalem. The next Order, Knight of Malta, is a complete departure from Masonry in that it is based on the Old Testament and is the first Christian order. Here, the candidate represents a knightly warrior of the Crusades prior to his departure for the Holy Land. The last Order is that of Knight Templar, the crowning glory of the York Rite system. Again, in this totally Christian order, the candidate represents a knightly postulant who de-sires to unite with a Commandery of Knights Templar during the era of the Crusades. After several trials to test his faith, courage, and humility, he achieves his goal. Many Masons believe that the Order of the Temple is the most beautiful, profound, and moving ceremony in Freemasonry. The fourth, and last, of the York Rite Bodies of Masonry, Commanderies of Knights Templar serve as the crowning

glory in completing the Christian Path towards Masonic Light. As a consequence, while not all Masons will become Knight Templars, every Christian Mason should; to complete his Masonic journey. On Wednesday, March 15 the DeMolay Legion of Honor members in this areawill meet at LuLu’s to break bread. All Masons are invited to join us. Contact David Sokol 378 5512 for more information. Shasta York Rite meets the first Mon-day of each month at 6:00 in the Redding Masonic Family Center.

We will be serving potatoes O’Brian, biscuits and gravy, sausage patties, pan-cakes, scrambled eggs, fruit cup, orange juice and coffee. Hello from Fort Crook #250! Well, the SNOW has finally receded in this part of Eastern Shasta County.

At the Stated Meeting for February Brother Aaron Chrighton gave his 1st Degree Proficiency. Brother Aaron, being a long haul trucker, has some challenging work to get with his coaches to learn the work. Brother Bob Davis and Rob Davis have been coaching Brother Aaron and did a great job. Kudos to all for a fine proficiency. Brother Aaron will keep us informed as to when he will be back in town as his work schedule allows so we can schedule his 2nd De-gree. It will be on a Saturday afternoon. Stay tuned for the date. Second Degree practices have been scheduled for Tuesday nights at 6:30. Please Officers and any other Brother, plan on attending. We elected our Temple Association directors for the staggered terms. As they have done such a great job in the past, it was an easy job to reelect the same slate with the exception of SW Mark Stalcup as he and the Master are au-tomatically on the board. Brother George Whitfiel, SD, waselected to fill the vacancy. Our Annual Picnic will be held in August, date to be set as soon as we can secure the location at the Intermountain Fair Grounds in McArthur. Brother Walt Libal, JS, thanked the Secretary and Mas-ter for the phone call on his birthday and said it is a nice thing to have the Lodge think of its members and call them on this occasion. This practice was initiated by our Secre-tary Bob Boyce and the Master joined in to make the calls. The Members present for the Stated Meeting all went next door to Mayers Hospital and visited with Worshipful Ray Williams PM who is recovering and gaining his strength back so he can move to the Oregon Masonic Home. Wor-shipful Davis Henrichsen PM is living there now and when I spoke with him he says it is a great place and sends his greetings to all of the brothers at Fort Crook. When these two Brothers get together in Oregon, California Masons may not be welcome in Oregon ever again…… Our best thoughts and prayers go out to Brother Bill Campbell who is undergoing treatment for Cancer and has been traveling to New York for some of the treatments he is receiving. “ Biker Bill” still rides his bicycle 10 miles each day to keep his strength and spirits up. God speed Brother. That is all for this month. I hope to see more sideliners as the weather improves.

Fraternally,Jim Crockett, Master

Greetings Nobles, Well, it has been a wet and wild month since we last wrote! Hopefully everyone and their families escaped all of the storms in good shape. Our President Smith was sure glad his house is on a hill as he looked out is dining room window to his new lake front property! Fortunately, the lake went back to being a river, so he is much happier now!The date for the POT’s visit to our area has been finalized and will be on Sunday July 30th at the Fort Crook Masonic Hall IN Fall River Mills. Further details will be announced at a later date. Don’t forget that Sunday March 5th will be our first World Famous Gin Fizz Breakfasts for 2017. Come and en-joy all you can eat beer batter pancakes, Adin Supply Sau-sage and eggs. All this for only $10 for adults and $6 for children under 12. Our next breakfasts will be on April 2nd, April 23rd and Mother’s Day May 14th. Come out and help us to support our Shrine Hospital.

From the Senior WardenFrom the Junior Warden

Reading #254Redding, California

A great February has been; we started off the month with a bang with guest chefs for

stated meal and an excellent presentation of education from Worshipful Jordan Yelinek from Prometheus lodge in San Francisco. And then the very next week we kept the ball rolling with an outstanding 2nd degree for brother Sayre Borden. Brother Frank Bacon, grandfather of our Senior Deacon Aaron Eaton, should be a very happy and proud brother. The staircase lec-ture that night was given by our Senior Deacon Aaron Eaton who blew everybody away by how good he did it, it was in true story form, with great coaching from Worshipful Randy and tips from Past Masters like Gordon Baugh. It was truly a very special night by all. February 18 we had our family night history lesson. We discussed Reading #254, and the ties it has with local lodges around our area. In March for the stated meeting we will have another guest speaker and musical entertainment so please all attend and make your reservations with our Junior Warden Worship-ful Mike Sanders, as always all the brothers are invited to our practices to prepare for upcoming degrees and we welcome all to participate in those degrees. With a proficiency having been done in the 1st degree our brother Chris Wikeen will be receiving his 2nd degree on March 8 at 7:30. February 26 we had a sports day watching the Daytona 500. To all the Masonic families have a great month of March and I wish you well.

Uriah McBroome, WM

Brethren, Brother Sayre Borden received his 2nd Degree of Masonry on 2/8/2017. It was a great degree and fellowship was shared by all in attendance. The Worshipful Master has challenged Brother Borden to complete his 2nd Degree Proficiency in time to have his 3rd Degree on 5/10/2017. Chris Wikeen did his 1st De-gree Proficiency in open Lodge on 2/15/2017. He is to receive his 2nd Degree on 3/8/2017 with the degree to begin at 7:30 pm. All Master Masons are cordially invited to come and enjoy Brother Wikeen being passed to the Degree of Fellowcraft. Although our Brethren as they advance through their de-grees have candidate coaches who mentor them, it is always rewarding when a Master Mason shares his experiences with an advancing candidate. I thought this would be an opportune time to revisit the three precious jewels of a Fellowcraft: the attentive ear, the instructive tongue and the faithful breast. The symbolisms of Freemasonry are many and the interpretations of these sym-bols by our Brethren are, likewise, many. When considering the presentation of our rituals, it takes an attentive ear for who the ritual is being provided, that is, the candidate. Although all that are present at a ritual probably walk away with some new understanding of it meaning or presentation. The instructive

tongues at least at the time of the presentation of the ritual, are the officers presenting the ritual. Without the hundreds of hours of practice both inside and outside of the lodge, the ritual would not be as meaningful as it is. And as we are taught, the secrets of Masonry are lodged in the repository of faithful breasts, our sideliners. They can not only vouch for the candi-date that he received his degree/s but also attest that the se-crets of the degree are safely lodged in the faithful breast of the candidate and the others in attendance. With the above in mind, Brethren, dust off your precious Fellowcraft jewels and join us to celebrate Chris Wikeen receiv-ing his Fellowcraft degree on 3/8/2017. Reading Lodge has always been considered “The Friendli-est Lodge in California.” Over the next few months I challenge our Brethren to improve our Lodge=s image in this regard. Part of being friendly, I would suggest, is being interactive with our Brothers. In the 1st Degree, we are taught that we are lead to the door by a friend who we later learn to be a Brother. When I think of a brother, I think of my sibling, my brother, who I have known for a very long time. I have been there for his good times and his bad. I have promoted his welfare and rejoiced in his successes. I am asking that the Brethren help us in getting to better know each other. I will begin this quest with the follow history of one of our brothers: He was in the service, met his wife in Italy, has worked many years in the private and public sector, and is currently working on a movie script. Who is this brother in our Lodge? For those of you who know the an-swer, I ask that you keep it safely lodged in your faithful breast until our April Stated Meeting. For those of you who would like to help our Brothers get to know each other a little better, please email me with your story.

Kemp Letts, SW

Hellooooo Everyone! I would like to address just one subject this month, and it has to do with Food & Fairness. An unlikely combination you say?, well here it is in a nutshell. When your Junior Warden says RESERVATIONS RE-QUESTED for a meal, that’s just what he means. Plain English Brothers & Sisters and guests. Thirty-nine of you RSVP’d for the February dinner by the cutoff date of 1/26 and I subsequently asked my substitute Kitchen Chairman (Wor. Tom Kurth) to buy steaks for 40 and I told him that about 5% usually fail to RSVP, so he should add a few more steaks to the forty. He and his helpers fixed 50 steaks; but SIXTY-TWO OF YOU SHOWED UP! That’s where the FAIRNESS comes in Brothers. It’s not FAIR for your Lodge to turn away even 1 (one) Brother or Sis-ter. But as food costs continue to rise, we will be forced to do exactly that if we don’t have enough food. The alternative will be to fix a substantial overage each month, and charge two dif-ferent prices for the dinner. A Reserved dinner being the less expensive of the two. I have tried to make this very simple. You may call my home number (226-9366) and talk to me or Sally to reserve, or you can call my cell number 262-2177 and leave a voice message, or you can email our new special email address for Reservations at

Our meeting of Feb. 14 was appropriate for Valentines Day. We brought in a new

member by affiliation and elected our Associate Conduc-tress with our newly affiliated sister, “JJ” Jensen. These are very positive steps for our membership. Our very gracious DGM, Jean Haynes, honored us with a visit and coached in the maneuvers of balloting. It cer-tainly helps to have her assistance. The next meeting is March 14, celebrating St. Pat-rick’s Day. A corned beef & cabbage dinner @ 6:00 PM is planned. $8.00 donation requested. Green is the color of choice. Carolyn Harrison, WM

Calling All Quilters (and want-to-be quilters): “JJ” Jen-sen has offered to begin a quilting group for Eastern Star sisters, open to members of all chapters. She has been quilting for 40+ years, has previously owned a quilt shop and teaches quilting for a living, but is willing to donate her services teaching beginning quilting and offering more ad-vanced projects for all levels of quilters. If there is enough interest, the group will meet in Redding on a schedule yet to be determined. Please contact her at: [email protected] to express your interest or ask any questions. Guaran-teed to be FUN!!!

Sisters & Brothers: Well our hope for an early Spring seems to have gone by the wayside but after all the

years of drought, guess wecan’t complain! Congratulations to all of the Lodge Brothers that were able to attend the 1st Degree on February 18th. Job well done. Thank you ladies for the food prepared for us. Keep your calendars open for March 17th as we will host the St. Patty’s Day dinner starting at 5 PM. Call myself or the Master to sign up to help set up, cook, clean up, or just come for a great meal of corned beef, cabbage, pota-toes, carrots, salad and dessert all for $10.00. Coffee, fla-vored waters, and soft drinks will be provided. Ten Brothers have not yet paid their 2017 dues. Please contact me at your earliest convenience. (938-1886). Annemarie and JR continue to keep the building clean and sharp. Thanks to you both for all of your efforts. Thanks to the Worshipful Master and his coordinating, the downstairs dining room got a face lift - the entire room was stripped and refinished last month. It appears that Brother Dan Parkin, PM is planning to leave the area. We are in the process of planning a going away dinner. Pleaseplan to attend and wish our Brother the best after his many years of service to our Lodge.

Fraternally & Sincerely,Your Secretary, John Murphy

Northern Lights March greeting to you: “Top of the morning to you and have you kissed the blarney stone yet.” Our March 3rd meeting will be “Wearing of the Green”. We will be serving desserts afterwards. On March 17th we are celebrating Brothers Night. There will be a dinner at 6:00pm. The theme this year is “Hawaiian”. Please RSVP to Sister Dina Wideman at 778-3603 so that our “famous” cook know how many to prepare for. Worthy Matron Carolyn is looking for a volunteer to make contact with our members. Please remember that one of our service projects for this year is collecting canned goods for local food banks. If each member attending a meeting would bring 1 or 2 cans of food we would soon have a good donation. We would sincerely like to thank all who helped with our dinner for the “Veterans K-9 Connection”. Special thanks go to the members of Welcome Redding and Molino Star Chapters and to the members of Redding Assembly, Rainbow for Girls for assisting with serving and cleanup. If it hadn’t been for Brother Loyal and Sis-ter Carolyn Taylor we would still be doing the dishes. Thanks also to the many people who donated money

over and above the cost of a ticket and to those who purchased tickets so that some of our Veterans could at-tend. We are very pleased to report that we were able to donate $1500.00 to the “Veterans K-9 Connection”. We want to wish a Happy Birthday to all of you who were born in the month of March and a Happy Anniver-sary to all our couples who were married in March.
