    UNIT: Caught in the Net

    LESSON: Internet addiction

    TIME: 50 min.

    LESSON AIMS:

    to give students practice in reading both for gist and for details;

    to develop students ability to use language in real life situations;

    to encourage students to freely express their opinions concerning the Internet addictionand its consequences;

    to make students aware of the potential dangers of spending too much time online and

    how they can be protected;

    to stir students imagination and curiosity.

    OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

    exchange opinions on the topic, argue their point of view and support their position

    with examples;

    acquire some basic communicative control over the topic discussed as well as the

    confidence to become more proficient in the future;

    use the new vocabulary in new contexts;

    use their knowledge of the English language to read and comprehend an article.

    SKILLS: reading, listening, speaking, writing

    MATERIALS: textbook, worksheets, pictures.

    STAGES:

    Activity 1: Warm-up (10 min)

    The teacher checks up homework and makes error corrections, if necessary. The teacher gets into

    the topic by asking the students to define the word addiction. The students are invited to give

    examples of various kind of addiction. The teacher writes on the board the word addiction andmakes a spidergram, containing the students answers.

    Activity 2 : Pre-Reading (10 min)

    The teacher separates the class into two groups and asks the students to guess and then make a listof the signs / symptoms of the Internet addiction. Each group produces a list and then the teacher reads

    it aloud and compares the two sets of answers.

    The students are invited to read the title of the article from the textbook and guess what is it

    about. Ss are then asked if they believe that the Internet addiction really exists.

    Activity 3: While-Reading (10 min)

    The students read silently the text. After reading, the teacher helps out with the new vocabulary.

    The students answer the questions regarding the text in small groups and then the teacher goes throughthe answers with the whole class.

    Activity 4: Post-Reading (10 min)

    Students are given a worksheet, consisting of a test. They take the test and at the end they will

    find out how much they are addicted to the Internet. Discussions on the topic take place.

    Activity 5: Follow-up (15 min)

    In groups, the students make up a list of ways of breaking the Internet addiction. The answers are

    confronted with the whole class. The teacher and the students draw up the conclusions on the topic

    discussed.

    The teacher assigns homework.

    HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT : Make a poster about the Internet and its advantages versus itsdisadvantages.

    10 - 19 points: You are an average on-line user. You may surf the Web a bit too long at times, but you have

    control over your usage.

    20 -39 points: You are experiencing occasional or frequent problems because of the Internet. You should

    consider their full impact on your life.

    40 - 50 points: Your Internet usage is causing significant problems in your life. You should evaluate the

    impact of the Internet on your life and address the problems directly caused by your Internet usage.
