Development and Social Change
Sheng-Chun Yang
Abstract
Taiwan resumed relations with China in 1987 when people were allowed to visit their relatives there. The number of Taiwanese touring the mainland has increased from 0.4377 in 1988 to 3666.14 million in August 2005 since Taiwanese were allowed to come to the mainland for traveling and visiting relatives in 1987.
China tourism, more than any other industry, depends on international relations and cross-straits stability. This industry has been influenced by central government’s reuniform policies and local government’s economic development desires. Tourism is a complex social phenomenon. No doubt, tourism can help local development from the profit. At the same time, the culture and consumption of foreign tourists have to effect the relation of the local economic, social, and cultural structures. It may even cause the political ideology changes. So, this paper analyzes how Taiwanese tourist to effects the local economic, social, cultural structures and cross-straits relations.
Key words: Taiwanese touring the mainland, Economic development, Tourism impact, Cultural exchange.
