showing the leading position of ZTE in the field of broadband access technology. With the
development of telecommunications, operators are more and more interested in worldwide energy
saving and environmental protection. ‘Energy Saving and Environmental Protection’ will be one of
the key factors of the products evaluation in telecom industry. In order to meet the requirements of
the operators for green network, ZTE keeps promoting and perfecting the green and environmental
protection solution, takes energy saving and environmental protection measures as company
improvement strategy and pays much attention to the construction of green network and the
application of environmental protection & energy saving technology.
ZTE’s broadband universal
access system has been applied
in the capacity of 35 million
lines in more than 64 countries
and regions all over the world,
including Sweden, Italy, Hong
Kong, Argentina, Brazil, India,
Turkey and Indonesia etc,
and ranks Top 3 among global
DSLAM providers. According to
the report of Gartner 2007, the

Software+Network=SOFNET
Formerly the 21st Century Communications World Forum, SOFNET 08 is a renowned high-end
communications industry forum initiated by the International Engineering Consortium (IEC). From
April 28 to May 1, 2008, SOFNET 08 was held in London by British Telecom (BT) with Mr. Matt. Bross
of BT Group acting as forum chair.
As the communications industry pays increasing attention to the development of Value-Added
Services (VASs) software, the topics of SOFNET 08 combine software with the next-generation
network, attracting several hundred high-level representatives of operators, equipment vendors,
and service providers from across the world to the forum. The forum extensively discussed the
development and application of next-generation network technologies and software that deliver new
services to customers. Big-name enterprises and third-party consultancies including BT, Telecom

1. ZTE DSLAM improves carbon footprint http://totaltele.com/View.aspx?ID=9950&t=1Green innovation award confirms market leading power reduction benefits
LONDON, UK, 6 May, 2008 - ZTE, a leading global provider of telecommunications equipment and
network solutions, today reveals that its award winning Broadband Universal Access System could
help operators make a major impact on their carbon footprint as well as save millions of dollars a year
in power costs. ZTE‘s DSLAM ZXDSL 9806 overreaches the European code of conduct on energy
consumption for broadband equipment, offering significant power consumption savings per port.
“Operators are becoming increasingly aware of their responsibility towards the environment,” said
Zhang Xinyu, director, global market, fixed network management team at ZTE. “ZTE’s DSLAM
solution enables broadband providers to radically reduce their carbon footprint and has recently been
recognized as the ‘Best Green Innovation’ at the Convergence World Awards,” he added.

ZTE’s 9806 is a network device offering up to 96 ADSL2+ lines or 64 VDSL2 lines in a 2U rack and is
located near the customers’ location, so connecting multiple DSLs to a high-speed internet line using
multiplexing techniques. This Broadband Universal Access System is perfectly suited for this fiber-to-
the-x (FTTx) network architecture model and enables operators to build a next-generation broadband
network while reusing existing copper cables. This helps preserve operators’ existing investments and
maximize the revenues associated to new broadband services, including video-on-demand, IPTV, and
Internet games.
By equipping its DSLAM solution with a passive optical network (PON) uplink card, ZTE has reduced
the amount of fibre required - when compared to traditional, point-to-point Ethernet architectures -
allowing operators to serve multiple premises using a single optical fibre cable. This means ZTE’
s solution enables broadband operators to significantly limit their power consumption, achieving
substantial cost savings and a reduced carbon footprint.
ZTE’s Broadband Universal Access System
has been awarded the Best Green Innovation
award at Convergence World 2008, announced
last Tuesday April 29th at SOFTNET in London,
as well as the InfoVision award in the Access
Network Technologies and Services category
at the Broadband World Forum 2007 in Berlin,
Germany.

7ZXDSL FSAP 9806 Grabs “Best Green Innovation” Award in Britain
ZTE’s Broadband Universal Access System (ZXDSL 9806) has been awarded the Best Green Innovation award at Convergence World 2008, announced on April 29th at SOFTNET in London, UK, as well as the InfoVision award in the Access Network Technologies and Services category at the Broadband World Forum 2007 in Berlin, Germany.
ZXDSL 9806 is a mini DSLAM from ZTE’s next generation Ethernet (IP)-DSLAM product portfolio that has been designed to offer a solution to build next generation broadband network. The equipment size and users’ capacity perfectly suits for FTTB and FTTC network architecture topologies. ZXDSL 9806 offers to Telecom Carriers and Operators a smooth evolution path reusing copper cables for the last one kilometer. Choosing the right strategy for FTTx deployment is the challenge of Operators,

whether incumbent or alternative, willing to preserve their investment, optimize CapEx and OpEx expenditures while maximizing their revenues with new services. ZXDSL 9806 provides abundant service access means such as ADSL/ADSL2/ADSL2+, SHDSL, VDSL2 with Ethernet as well as with EPON or GPON (uplink/downlink) interface with aggregation network. Furthermore, in the new version (ZXDSL 9806 V.2.0) Voice ove IP (VoIP) subscriber ports are also available.
With the advantages of high integration, abundant service interfaces and flexible networking ability, the ZXDSL 9806 system can meet various requirements and demands:
1. Meeting demands of residential users to have high bit-rate access to Internet via broadband,to can play Internet games and to enjoy video on demand.
2. Meeting demands of commercial users on high QoS (Quality of Service) and new service facilities, such as videoconference, enterprise interconnection, VPN (Virtual Private Network) and voice packet.
3. Meeting the operation & maintenance requirements of broadband network, providing functions such as on-line test, SELT/DELT test and MODEM remote management.
To some extend ZXDSL 9806 can also be used for FTTC architecture. It can be installed in hardened outdoor cabinet or in existing outdoor Copper Distribution Frames and one or several sub-racks can be cascaded to aggregate a larger number of end-users.
Based on some operators’ feedback during lab trials ZTE ZXDSL 9806 has been ranked as the best in class in power consumption and in operation under high temperature environment. Indeed, ZXDSL 9806 overreaches the European code of conduct on energy consumption for broadband equipment from a power consumption stand point offering up to significant power consumption savings per port.
In order to achieve energy-saving objective, it has been focusing on the following sectors in the research lab
1. System Architecture
Choose proper System Kernel Solution, such as DSL chipset, switch and processors according to customer requirements.
9ZXDSL FSAP 9806 Grabs “Best Green Innovation” Award in Britain
Choose from these components depending most of the total amount of energy consumption.
2. Power Optimization
The selection of a rational power solution can improve energy utilization.
3. Power Management Features
Only the necessary components are active. Disable unnecessary functions according to different system states.
Feed the right energy according to working status.
4. Cooling system performances
Through detailed thermal design ZTE is choosing suitable cooling programs, which include controllable fans and natural cooling.
Further on, xPON uplink card allows operators significant savings, like:
1. Optical fiber investment between Telecom’s Central Building and the DSLAM.
2. Civil works of links and fibers like digging and trenching tasks, which usually need big drilling machines and trucks.
3. Energy usage based on the passive technology.
4. Human resource. P2MP architecture is much easier to manage and maintenan than P2P.
ZTE is in line with:
