Project description

In 2007, Zentralkokerei Saar GmbH (ZKS), the commonly owned subsidiary of AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke and Saarstahl AG, started an over-all modernization programme of their coke making plant with the aim of optimizing the coke produc-tion and reducing emissions. In the context of this large-scale project, Paul Wurth was contracted for the engineering and turnkey construction of the new stamp charging coke oven batteries B3 and B1, featuring a modern design approach and state-of-the-art pollution-prevention technologies. Since the successful completion of this rebuild, ZKS is now one of the most modern coking plants in the world.

Project timeline

` Greenfield construction of the new coke oven battery n°3 with 50 ovens

` First coke of battery n°3 was pushed in February 2010

` Demolition of coke oven battery n°1

` Construction of new coke oven battery n°1 on the foundations of the old one started in 2010

` First coke of battery n°1 was pushed in October 2012

Cokemaking Plants

The plant is equipped with SOPRECO™, the Single Oven Pressure Control System developed by Paul Wurth to maintain pressure constant inside the oven during distillation time with very low pressure in the collecting main (0 or below 0). This results in a drastical reduction of possible emissions.

The refractory block and the combustion system have been studied and designed making use of the VAP (Virtually Assembly Program) that guarantees:
