NOVEMBER 11, 2016 CLUB CHARTERED 1924 NO. 5169 DISTRICT 7280
We started the meeting with a prayer by Charlie Deer, and the Pledge of Allegiance.
Speaking to a full room, Lea Birnbacher, the Rotary Youth Exchange student being hosted by our club, spoke about Spain, her
family and what it’s like to live in the United States.
Spain is a beautiful country with coasts and beaches on three sides. Four different languages are spoken there, including Spanish and Catalan, which is spoken where Lea lives in Barcelona.
Lea’s family in Spain includes her mother, father, sister, brother and dog.
In the U.S., 16 year-old Lea is staying with Krista and Reid Moon, and attending the Seneca Valley
High School as a senior.
After Lea spoke, Rev. Moon also discussed the Youth Exchange program. He called Lea a “gift” who Krista and he have been enjoying as part of their family. He thanked the Rotary club for its Youth Exchange program.
Beth Marshall introduced Lea and thanked our club for being supportive of Rotary Youth Exchange. She asked members to consider being host families and help us locate future host families. Contact Beth or Jeff Simmons if you would like more information.

Tom Grant talked about the District Workshop held in Franklin last Saturday. Five from our club attended. We received a number of awards for achievements made by our club during Tom’s year as president. Many of these awards were handed out by Past District Governor Lee Weber. Some of the highlights for our club included 100% member participation in Rotary Foundation giving; the 3rd highest End Polio Now giving; Bringing Youth into Rotary; and we got one of the 3 top awards from PDG Lee Weber.
Tom also said ShelterBox is shipping emergency survival materials into Iraq near Mosul as the fight against ISIS draws near that city. Find out more here.
He also said ShelterBox is setting up a ‘Hero’ program in which clubs commit to a certain levels of donations for several consecutive years.
Lea volunteered to help with the ShelterBox display at the Pancake Breakfast.
We need to all sell our Steelers Raffle Tickets! Turn your money and ticket stubs to Jim Moser.
This Friday, students from Duquesne University will visit to speak about their efforts to provide clean water to a community in Africa. The representatives of Pure Thirst will describe their visit this past summer to Tanzania where the project is taking place.
