Electrolysis project

Definitions:

Electrode: An electrode is a conductor through which electric current is passed. Found in variable forms, electrodes may be wires, plates, or rods. An electrode may be constructed of metal, such as copper, silver, lead, or zinc. However, an electrode may also be made of a non-metal substance, such as carbon.

anode: is an electrode at which current leaves the cell and oxidation takes place. For example, an anode is the positive electrode in a storage battery.

cathode: is described as a negative electrode. Current enters the cell at the

cathode and reduction takes place. Electrons are repelled from the cathode. Electrolyte:

Products , using carbon rods, in the electrolysis of:

• Molten lead (ii) bromide: lead metal at the negative electrode

• Aqueous copper Dilute sulphuric acid : copper at the cathode and chlorine at the anode. Aqueous copper (II) sulphate:

Industrial processes of:Industrial processes of:

. Refining copper by electrolysis with copper electrodes

. Electroplating of metals . Obtaining aluminium from pure aluminium oxide

( in molten cryolite) . Obtaining chlorine, hydrogen and sodium

hydroxide from aqueous sodium chloride.
