...Your.Daily.Fix.................Hold onto your Hats.by Paul MacNeil Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) - one of the fastest growing sports in North America - will be making its debut in Shaunavon with Rumble in the Cage 47 this weekend. The event will take place at the Crescent Point Wickenheiser Centre on Saturday, May 25. Tickets to the event are still available at several Southwest locations. They can also be purchased at the door on Saturday. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the show scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. Rumble in the Cage is being organized through a partnership between the Rock
Creek Golf Club and Lethbridge promoter Lee Mein. MMA is a full contact combat sport that allows the use of both striking and grap-pling techniques, both standing and on the ground, from a variety of other combat sports. The name most familiar to the average sports fan is the Ultimate Fighting Cham-pionship (UFC). It is the largest mixed martial arts promotion company in the world, which hosts most of the top-ranked fighters in the sport and produces events worldwide. Saturday’s fight card will be headlined by former local resident Tyler Illerbrun.

Tyler, who will fight Derek Daku of Estevan in the main event, is undefeated in three appearances as an MMA fighter. Daku also has an impressive record, with four wins in five fights. In what promis-es to be a very entertaining and competi-tive battle, the fighters will compete in the heavyweight division. The competitors for Rumble in the Cage 47 come from a variety of locations ranging from Estevan, Medicine Hat, Sas-katoon, Regina, Brandon, Edmonton, Cal-gary and Lethbridge. Mein has trained a number of fight-ers who have gone on to compete in the UFC. His most recent prodigy is his son Jordan (Young Gun) Mein, who has al-
ready fought twice in the UFC (1-1) in-cluding a win at UFC 158 featuring the return to the ring of Canadian superstar George St. Pierre in March. Jordan will be in Shaunavon to help coach a number of the fighters competing in Saturday’s event. He will also be making a guest appear-ance and signing autographs during at the event’s official weigh in on Friday at the CPWC. The show will also feature an after-event party on Saturday, although there are lim-ited number of tickets available for the cabaret.

A boy was having a lot of difficulty in French class. To encourage him, his teacher said, “You’ll know you’re really beginning to get it when you start dreaming in French.”The boy ran into class all excited one day,
saying, “Teacher, teacher! I had a dream last night and everyone was talking in French!” “Great!” said the teacher; “what were they saying?” “I don’t know,” the boy replied; “I

rElay For lIFE sEt For tonIGHtby Paul MacNeil After months of planning and hard work, organizers are now set for the 2013 Southwest Relay for Life, an inspiration-al event that raises money for important cancer programs. “It’s been non-stop planning since Feb-ruary,” said Joan McNaughton, who is co-chairing this year’s relay with Yvonne Neufeld. “It’s been a tremendous amount of work, but it will be worth it in the end. It should be a fantastic night.” Relay For Life is an inspirational, 12-hour overnight fundraising event that has been described as more than an event - it’s an experience, a celebration of survival, as well as an opportunity to honour those
who have lost their life to cancer. The Relay will take place at the Eastend Rink Complex and Maple Avenue. This year’s celebration at Eastend will kick off today (Friday, May 24) with sur-vivor, volunteer and team registrations from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with a chili supper scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. (Non relay participants can also en-joy the supper for a $5 fee.) The opening ceremonies are scheduled to start at 6:45 p.m. with the Victory Lap of area cancer survivors set for 7 p.m. Teams will be-gin their overnight trek around the track starting at about 7:30 p.m. Organizers have also lined-up plenty of food, entertainment and other activities throughout the night to add a little extra
fun to the festivities. Members of the general public - even if they aren’t on a team - are invited to come out and watch and take part in all cere-monies. The relay will take another emotion-al turn at dusk (about 10 p.m.), when the spectacular Luminary ceremony takes place. At that moment, hundreds of can-dles will be lit in honour of, or in memory of, loved ones who have had cancer. Resi-dents can buy a luminary online or in per-son at the event until 9:30 p.m. that night. The relay will continue throughout the night with the closing ceremonies and the Final Lap set to take place at 7 a.m.
