HISTORY

The first YMCA was organized in London,England on June 6, 1844.

George Williams was only 20 years old and 11other youth responded the call of Jesus Christ todo something for young people in difficultconditions.

Seek better ways of building Christian faithand character among all people.

Sir George Williams: The Genius Behind YMCA

Sir George Williamswas born on October 11,1821, the youngest ofeight children. Hedescribed himself as a"careless, thoughtless,godless, swearing youngfellow," but while stayingin the town ofBridgewater and learningto become a draper hebecame a devoutChristian.

Williams became a crusader for

improved working conditions such as

shorter hours (a standard working day

was 15 or so hours), and as he became a

successful businessman, he gave away

approximately two-thirds of his income.

People back then suffered differentproblems that pushed Sir George Williams tomake an action:

• Unhealthy social conditions aroused at largecities at the end of the Industrial Revolution.

• Difficult living condition.

• Struggles caused by the values challengedsociety.

• Religion and Faith revivalism.

Contribution:

• Physical education geared towards the totaldevelopment of individuals

• In 1891, the YMCA (Dr. James Naismith)

invented BASKETBALL.

• In l895, YMCA Physical Director William

Morgan invented VOLLEYBALL.

• A Training School for Physical Education Directors& Secretaries of YMCAs

In YMCA, there are three words that we valuemost:

•In 1899, the YMCA was introduced in the Philippinesthrough the first contingent of American troops.

•In 1907, the “YMCA of Manila” was established as theinitial civilian YMCA in the Philippines.

•In 1910, definite steps were made to establish anAssociation for Filipinos. In November 10, 1911, thename “The YMCA of the Philippine Islands” wasadopted and became an official movement of thecountry.

•It has continued to be of service to thedevelopment of young people and ofcommunities as a partner of the government innation-building.

•It has established itself into a highly centralizedassociation that has transformed into a viablefederation of autonomous local YMCAs at workin almost 25 key provinces and cities in thePhilippines

•It has 250,000 members and participants,1,500 volunteer leaders, and 36 professionalstaff
