CPR APPOINTMENTKathryn McQuade has been named Execu-tive Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer of Canadian Pacific Railway Limited. She joined CP as Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Of-ficer in 2007. Prior to that she had held the position of Executive Vice-President - Planning and Chief Information Officer at Norfolk Southern Corp.CP Press Release September 4, 2008
CN THIRD QUARTER RESULTS EXCEED EXPECTA-TIONSCN reported its third quarter operating results October 21 announcing a gain in revenues of 12% to $2,257 million, a 10% operating income gain to $844 million, and a 14% net income gain to$552 million (all figures in Canadian funds). The company’s operating ratio rose by six-tenths of one point to to 62.6%.
The results for the third quarters of 2008 and 2007 were affected by by deferred income tax adjustments. The company said it managed to offset most of the 60% rise in diesel prices year over year during the quarter with higher fuel surcharges, improved pricing and stronger commodity volumes, but also by aggressively trim-ming whatever fat it could find in its own operations.
E. Hunter Harrison, President & Chief Executive Officer said, “I am extremely pleased with our results. Operational execution during the quarter was outstand-ing, with notable gains in network fluidity, productivity and asset utilization, while we enjoyed good revenue growth across most commodity groups.”
CP THIRD QUARTER RESULTSCanadian Pacific reported net income of $173 million for the third quarter, down from $219 million in 2007 while total rev-enues rose seven per cent to $1.26 billion from $1.19 billion a year ago. Operating expenses were $962 million for the quarter, up from $866 million a year earlier, with the price of fuel the single largest driver contributing to the increase in expenses. The company said freight revenues rose 8% in the third quarter on continued pric-ing strength, inclusive of fuel recoveries. Industrial and consumer products revenues were up 24%, with automotive and inter-modal revenues increasing 16 and 11 per cent respectively. For the first nine months of 2008, total revenues were up 3% to $3.6 billion, in-come decreased 7% to $453 million from $488 million a year earlier and operating expenses were up 8% to $2.9 million.

Précis of presentation by Canadian Pacific Railway duo Paul Kerry, Area Manager Business Development, and Domenic Bonaldo Project Manager, Engineering Services, at the Toronto Railway Club luncheon meeting at Fontana Gardens in Concord, October 30, 2008.
Building CP’s Rail Access to Toyota’s New Woodstock Assembly Plant.
Using a Powerpoint presentation Paul Kerry and Domenic Bonaldo showed the planning, approval and construction phases of CP’s five kilometre rail access line into Toyota’s new assembly plant near Woodstock.
In his introduction, Paul said that CP Real Estate acquired 70 acres of land for the rail line and started work on the environmental assessment in late 2005.
“The sensitivity of the conservation lands and the Thames River presented the big-gest challenges,” he said. It was CP’s com-mitment to the conservation authority to minimize the disruption of the conservation area. The approval process went very well and in early 2007, CP had all the approvals in place to start construction.
To cross the Pittock Reservoir, Paul said that

Aerial view of the CP Galt subdivision, City of Woodstock, showing the Toyota plant location, the Thames River and the Pittock Reservoir which the rail line had to cross.
Two 42 meter long steel girders were assembled at the sight and posi-tioned by cranes on the concrete piers. Domenic pointed out that this was the fourth bridge built at this location in the past 100 years.
CP was able to use an old rail corridor that had been the CP mainline until the 1960s when the mainline was relocated to accom-modate the Pittock Reservoir.
“Using this corridor,” he said was a key feature of the CP route design to lessen our environmental impact.”
At this point Domenic took over to show highlights of the construction phase.
One of those highlights Domenic pointed out, was the fact that more than 10,000 square meters of fish habitat were created in the reservoir. “The compensation ratio was pretty close to 2:1 ratio, welcome news for the DFO biologists,” he said.
The rail line access project was completed in September 2008 and trains started mov-ing over the new line in late October.
