IBM System x Rack-mount Servers Proposal
Executive Summary
Our Understanding of Your Goals
Your company’s profit and growth are driven by its ability to innovate and grow—and to respond on demand to market conditions quickly, decisively and dynamically.
The pervasive computing trend that allows information anywhere anytime provides access to information to millions of users and devices (cell phones and web-enabled PDAs included). These new services require continuous uptime and demand more from support systems. Your server infrastructure requires new capabilities for communicating and managing even larger amounts of information in a more dynamic and cost-effective manner.
In addition, the adoption of on demand technologies for business-to-consumer, business-to-business, and intra-business applications is accelerating. This places higher demands on technology platforms. More significantly, your business is increasingly turning to industry-standard technologies for this new on demand foundation.
As IT solutions become more complex, infrastructure and maintenance costs rise but IT budgets are not growing at the same rate (many are flat or declining). Therefore, you need innovative technology to help keep costs to a minimum with solutions that are preconfigured, easy to install and maintain, scalable and affordable.
Our Approach to Meeting Your Goals
IBM® System x® helps you take back control and reduce complexity by simplifying systems management for industry-standard computing environments. System x servers provide innovative technology features that deliver time-saving, cost-savings benefits. With outstanding value for money, the System x servers are the best of IBM engineering delivered in an industry-standard platform.
IBM continues to build X-Architecture® into systems and set the bar for Intel® processor-based servers across the industry. The guiding principles include:
Designing System x servers with a goal of providing uninterrupted (OnForever™) computing
Bringing down enterprise computing cost
Becoming a leader in establishing industry-wide collaboration
Making servers easier to deploy and use

IBM System x Rack-mount Servers Proposal
OnForever Computing
When IBM designs a System x server, the goal is always to get as close as possible to a platform that maintains continuous operation. Building highly available servers takes more than just using reliable components or redundant disk drives, fans, and power supplies. Naturally, those things are done; however, it is important to address both causes of downtime—scheduled and unscheduled outages—to truly improve operational efficiency.
Bringing Down Enterprise Computing Cost
Many companies around the world enjoy the reliability, scalability, and operational features of IBM enterprise server platforms. Clients have told IBM they want capabilities in System x servers that are similar to those seen in larger systems, but at a price comparable with other industry-standard servers.
IBM’s strategy for meeting this requirement is to leverage proven investments in advanced server technologies and skills. This strategy allows greater capability for Intel processor-based servers without having to reinvent technologies and methods. By using the proven capabilities of other server families, IBM shortens development cycles, reduces development costs, and increases interoperability for your complex IT environments.
Driving Industry Standards
Bringing advanced enterprise technology to System x systems is one challenge that IBM can deliver easily; however, the System x systems must continue to be “industry standard.” If each server vendor uses similar components (many made by IBM) and the same operating systems, you have greater flexibility in technology management.
To help continue this trend, IBM is working with industry leaders and standards organizations to drive new technologies in standards-based ways. Innovative capabilities in System x servers provide initiatives that allow IBM to uniquely address your application requirements first, then take it a step further. IBM works with industry consortiums and standards organizations to have the leadership technologies developed included in standards specifications and confirm that development directions coincide with future standards.
Finally, IBM makes these technologies available to the industry in accordance with those standards. This open technology approach has fueled the growth of industry-standard computing since its inception. The leadership role of System x systems is evident in the industry’s adoption of the Common Diagnostic Model, PCI-X and InfiniBand I/O, and in Active PCI licensing to other companies.
On the software front, IBM not only supports Microsoft® Windows® operating systems on System x servers, but also Novell NetWare and Linux®. IBM now supports or has Linux-based offerings for System i®, System p®, System x, and System z® servers to further demonstrate the commitment to Linux.
