SUCCESS!

TRACKING FILE DOWNLOADS

Problem

Javascript does not get executed.

Approach

Building our own request for utm.gif, the smallest picture in the world, and manually adding the parameters.

Where can you do this?

BitstreamServlet.java (JSP), BitstreamReader.java (XMLUI) or in SolrLogger.java.

Caveat

Passing an IP requires you to “mask” your usage as mobile usage, by changing UA- to MO- in your GA ID

GOOGLE ANALYTICS LIMITATIONS

You don’t have the data on local servers

Customization required for integration in the DSpace user interface

No aggregations by collection or community

Measuring web usage is not an exact science just yet

Having multiple data points is not a luxury

Some implementation details are unknown

Bot filtering
