WorkBoat Maintenance & Repair 2015 3
WELCOME
Welcome to WorkBoat Maintenance & Repair Conference and Expo, the new event developed specifically for the operations teams responsible
for vessel maintenance and repair.
The cyclical nature of the commercial marine industry can create a boon for some while causing challenges for others. WorkBoat strives to create events that connect you with the information, supplies and support your needs in good times and in bad. That’s why you’ll find a wide variety of conference sessions and networking events intertwined with the expo hall.
On Tuesday there is a full slate of conference sessions covering three major tracks of Structure & Hull, Power & Propulsion and Regulatory Sessions. The day will wrap with an opening reception and a two hour sneak peek of the Expo floor.
Wednesday & Thursday will leave you lots of time to meet with the nearly 200 exhibitors that will be on hand for you, stocked with leading solutions for maintenance issues and innovations. Check out the Exhibitor List on page 12 and a map of the floor on page 28.
In true to WorkBoat form, we’ve left room for some fun with exciting and informative special events. On each of these days the morning will start with a networking breakfast focused on Workforce Development and the challenges and opportunities that face our aging industry. The Expo days will also feature a Keynote Luncheon; Captain Nick Sloane, salvage master for the wreck removal of cruise ship Costa Concordia will speak on Wednesday and Legendary Coach and Football Analyst Terry Bowden on Thursday. Enjoy lunch with your colleagues and peers from around the gulf. There will be plenty of time for listening to the speakers and networking around the table.
All three days will wrap up with a networking Happy Hour for all exhibitors and attendees so you can get those last few conversations in before you head home or head out on the town.
There is a lot packed into these three days, I hope you find that this event will be exactly what your operations team needed. I always welcome your feedback; please contact me if there was something missing from the show. I hope you’ll join us again April 12-14, 2016.
Kind Regards,

TUESDAY CONFERENCE PROGRAM
STRUCTURE & HULL SESSIONS
9:45-10:30 Training New WeldersShipyard welding is a lot more challenging than other industrial welding and requires continued innovation. Join in the discussion as professionals from welding schools and shipyards share how to train new welders to reduce time and money spent on welding procedures while increasing productivity and quality.
10:45-11:30 Physical Asset Management Strategy
An industry study discovered that 84% of equipment failures were caused by the way that equipment was designed, installed, operated and maintained — human induced defects. Only 12% of defects were due to wear and tear and 4% of defects were specifically due to age, according to the study Preventive, predictive and precision maintenance each has an impact on maintenance costs per operating hour, availability for operations and reliability. Many vessel operators could drive down costs, improve availability, safety and customer satisfaction if they would employ proactive reliability tools in defining their physical asset management strategy. This session provides some insight into using a set of tools in a cost effective way to achieve better equipment performance and lower total costs.
1:00-1:45 Quality Paint Applications Through the Use of Standards
This presentation will focus on how specifying industry standards for surface preparation, coating application and quality control inspection vastly improves the quality of the application while
minimizing the risk of premature coating failure. These consensus-based industry standards support the vessel owner’s goal of obtaining and, in many cases, exceeding the expected service life of the protective coating. The discussion will walk the audience through a paint project explaining what consensus-based standards should be specified and test practices followed at specific hold points during surface preparation, coating application and coating cure to assure the completion of a quality paint project.
2:00-2:45 Understanding Corrosion
In the arena of marine corrosion there are evolving standards that professionals need to stay abreast of. This session will help attendees understand the various types of corrosion, identify the causes of corrosion failures, choose the right materials for uses in marine environments, as well as select and use the proper protection methods against marine corrosion.
3:00-3:45 Human Capital Management: Recruitment, Hiring and Retention in Today’s Marine and Offshore Environment
Hiring and employment in the Marine industry is ever-evolving and certainly has its challenges in the current economic environment. Due to certain regulations changes, technical shortage and generation gaps some skills sets are at the highest demands ever. Still some organizations are forced to change their personnel strategies from a fixed cost to a variable and avoid over hiring and the burden of large payroll and overhead costs. We will discuss what companies are doing to overcome these challenges along with retention efforts and best practices to minimize costs while maintaining quality in the industry.
The best engineers, builders, and fixers all share a common belief: something good – and even something great – can always be better. This series brings that search for better solutions to the area of structure & hull maintenance. Learn strategies to optimize the quality of your welding, paint application, corrosion prevention, and more. Because there’s always room to improve.
8 WorkBoat Maintenance & Repair 2015
POWER & PROPULSION SESSIONS
9:45-10:30 Improving Your Bottom Line through Condition Monitoring
Millions of dollars are invested every year into vessel maintenance programs with the goal of preventing costly and sometimes catastrophic downtime. Condition monitoring by vibration analysis and, most recently, online monitoring systems, popular in the oil and gas industry, has proven to be a vital component of successful and cost efficient maintenance programs. This presentation will provide an introduction to condition monitoring, vibration analysis and online monitoring systems, and showcase the attractive benefits that come along with these technologies. Case studies, methods, modeling, trending, and application will be discussed to provide a real-world look at condition monitoring in action.
1:00-1:45 Vibration Monitoring
This presentation will complement the Condition Monitoring session by exploring in greater detail how vibration monitoring can help lower your costs per maintenance hour and help prevent equipment failure. We’ll look at systems in general; specific products on the market; and how vessel operators are implementing the practice with success.
2:00-2:45Using Technology to Lower Maintenance Costs and Decrease Downtime and Costly Repairs
Join as P. Jaime Tetrault from Caterpillar details how technology products and connected services can help marine customers to lower operation and maintenance costs, increase productivity, avoid downtime and costly repairs, adhere to increasing regulatory requirements, and work more safely and sustainably.
3:30-3:45Human Capital Management: Recruitment, Hiring and Retention in Today’s Marine and Offshore Environment
TUESDAY CONFERENCE PROGRAM
The technology that powers America’s commercial fleets is changing faster than ever – presenting a unique challenge to the crews in charge of maintaining vessel motors and fuel systems. Join WorkBoat and the leaders in fuel and propulsion technology as we discuss the most effective ways to prevent equipment failure and maintain a reliable, high-powered, high-tech fleet.
WorkBoat Maintenance & Repair 2015 9
REGULATORY SESSIONS
9:45-10:30New EPA Tier 4 Regulations
With EPA emissions standards continuing to evolve and become more stringent, depending on the size and power of the engine, it is imperative that everyone who works to maintain and repair a vessel understands how the new standards will apply. With Tier 3 coming online this year, the industry will need to prepare for Tier 4 standards in the next two or three years. Join industry professionals as they explain the requirements and what to expect.
10:45-11:30 Ensuring Compliance in Spare Part Procurement
Spare part procurement sounds easy — you need a part and you order it. However, because we live in a global marketplace, you need to consider a number of factors before you place that order. If you don’t go directly to the manufacturer, are you sure the part is the proper one? Can you trust the quality? Will the part arrive on time? Does it meet regulations? Attend this session to learn how to ensure that your spare part procurement methods mean that your parts function properly and that they will be delivered in a timely fashion. 1:00-1:45 SubChapter M and its Impact on MaintenanceSubchapter M is almost, finally here. In September 2014, the Coast Guard posted its regulatory agenda for the release of the towing vessel inspection final rule. However, the industry still awaits its final release. The rule is a chance to elevate safety in the inland barge industry through the rule’s key component — requiring a Towing Safety Management System. The proposed TSMS requirements say, “Procedures must be in place to ensure safety
of property, the environment and personnel.” But what procedures must be in place and how will those who maintain the vessels meet these requirements? This session will answer those questions.
2:00-2:45 Lubricant RegulationsThere are many industry terms or names for EAL’s on the market today. Unfortunately these names are confusing to the consumer. Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants, Environmentally Friendly Lubricant and Environmentally Considerate Lubricants are all acceptable names. The key factor is the standards set by the EPA not the generic name. No matter what the name of the lubricant we are all trying to meet the same standards. The EPA has chosen Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants “EAL’s” as the term for the Vessel General Permit. There are pros and cons for each base oil technology. There are also maintenance related issues which are affected by the EPA VGP record keeping requirements in Section 4.2 of the Permit. This session will address some of the findings to ensure the proper materials are being used.
3:30-3:45 Human Capital Management: Recruitment, Hiring and Retention in Today’s Marine and Offshore EnvironmentHiring and employment in the Marine industry is ever-evolving and certainly has its challenges in the current economic environment.
If there’s anything you can count on changing as quickly – and as disruptively – as technology, it’s government regulation. EPA Tier 4, Coast Guard SubChapter M, and other new industry rules mandate fundamental changes in vessel equipment and operations. Fortunately, there’s time to plan and prepare. These sessions were designed to bring you up to speed on the regulations you need to work with, and how to do so in a way that keeps your business moving full steam ahead.

Duramax® DuraBlue® is a dimensionally
stable composite greaseless bushing
that you can trust to stay on the job.
Don’t chance using inferior bushings
that are dimensionally unstable.
Other bushings have a wide range of
thermal expansion and contraction
rate. This can affect the interference
needed to hold bushings in place, and
at times can cause steering issues.
Duramax® technology never steers
you wrong. Run with confidence.
DuraBlue® experiences no water
swell, is dimensionally stable,
and always on the job.
DuraBlue® Composite Rudder Bushing:
n Is greaseless, self-lubricating, and pollution-free
n Has low thermal expansion and contraction
n Gives exceptionally long wear life n Delivers ultra-low friction value of 0.04 n Has extremely high load capacity
DuraBlue® Composite is used for rudder stocks,
pintles, steering gear bushings and available in
sheets for thrust washers and wear pads.
Extensive inventory available for quick shipment.
Bushings available in diameters: 1'- 42" (2.5 - 107cm)
