Pays it Forward
Moving Toward our vision
paul Kruegerpresident and CeO
The theme of this year’s national Make-a-wish Conference in october was “One Mission, One Vision, One Voice”. The conference was held at disneyland and also marked the 100,000th disney wish! our staff and board members were among 1,300 members of the Make-a-wish family from the 62 u.s. chapters, national team and 46 countries in attendance. as you might imagine, the week was full of amazing wish stories and inspiration surrounding our important mission of granting the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.
nationally, 14,799 wishes were granted across the country this past fiscal year. That number includes 59 wishes to kids across south dakota. we granted nine more wishes than the previous year, which we are pleased about. However, here and across the country, we know we are missing kids.
why is that? some families believe we only help kids who have a terminal diagnosis. nationally, 70 percent of kids we serve beat their illnesses and sadly, 30 percent do pass away. others believe that if their child gets a wish, another child will not. Fortunately, we have generous supporters, like you, to help each and every child who qualifies receive a wish. we believe each and every child between the ages of 2½ and 18 who meets our criteria should receive their one heartfelt wish.
as a staff and board, we are focusing much of our efforts on reaching more kids—educating the medical community and parents about who we serve, how kids are referred and the many positive benefits of a wish. as members of the Make-a-wish family, we ask you to do the same. Educate yourself about the Make-a-wish process and then help us make sure we aren’t missing any kids across the state. our website, southdakota.wish.org, thoroughly explains the process and the impact of a wish. or you can simply read this newsletter and be inspired by the kids we serve!

Wish Perspective
1
10 Years Later! By lyDia SanDThere are few times throughout my 24 years that i’ve been able to fully comprehend how certain moments in my life would define me. Ten years ago this november is one of those moments. on november 2, 2005 my Make-a-wish was granted and the impact this experience had on my life is still profound today.
My wish experience started when wish granter volunteers arrived at my house and asked me to think about what i wanted my wish to be. i didn’t hesitate when i replied, “to meet Jennifer garner,” the star of the then hit television show “alias” The wish granters told me there were no guarantees with a celebrity wish, but i couldn’t be convinced otherwise. Thankfully, through the awesome powers of Make-a-wish and my wish sponsor, J&L Harley-davidson, my wish came true!
The morning my family and i left we were escorted to the airport via limo and i was greeted by 30 Harley bike lovers, who endured the chilly morning to wish me off. when i arrived in Los angeles, the royal treatment continued and i felt like a star myself. The next morning we arrived on the set of “alias,” and before i knew it i was on set sitting next to the director and watching the actors of my favorite show film a scene. on “alias,” Jennifer garner played sydney Bristow, a character who never backed down from a challenge. she is where i often found strength during the days i struggled with having cystic fibrosis (CF).
after several takes, the director called for a break and before i knew it, i heard Jennifer garner call out, “is Lydia here?” she waltzed right over to me with a huge smile on her face, immediately giving me a hug as she introduced herself to me and my parents. i was absolutely stunned. i sat and listened to Jen with tears of joy in my eyes knowing
that somehow, the wish i asked for in my living room many months before had come true.
in one day i toured the sets, met the cast and crew, watched filming and even spent time with just Jen to talk. The whole day was an absolute whirlwind, but details of my trip are still clear in my mind to this day. However, two major things have stuck with me the most. First, that day was the only experience of my life that i didn’t remember my disease. i didn’t remember taking my pills or doing my treatments—pure happiness and excitement completely consumed me instead. second, the gratitude i felt for Make-a-wish as a fourteen-year-old continues to this day.
i realize that i am fortunate to be able to celebrate the ten year anniversary of my wish being granted—not all those who Make-a-wish has touched are here with us today. To Make-a-wish and its supporters, i cannot say thank you enough. You gave me a very special gift: for a couple of days i didn’t feel sick or different, i just got to be happy. The feeling i got when first meeting Jen is something i still remember vividly, and this experience still serves as one of the best moments of my life. again, thank you for making wishes like mine come true every day for those who deserve it most.
About Lydia: after graduating from Washington High School in Sioux Falls in 2009, lydia went to Bethel university in St. paul, Minn., and graduated in 2013 with a degree in political science and international relations. Currently, she’s working full-time as the program manager at Children’s Scholarship Fund in Omaha and going to school part-time working toward a master’s degree in public administration from the university of nebraska Omaha.

About you: i’m a realtor with ace realty and my husband darrin, works for BnsF. we have two wonderful children, donavon is in the 9th grade and shealay is in the 5th grade. My family is very involved in our community and school activities. we love to travel, camp, hunt, fish, play and watch sports and anything else we can do together. My passion is my family and how i can guide them to be who they are. i encourage and teach them how to give of themselves. My motto for life is “Pay it forward in any way you can, from the simplest to the most difficult task, find a way to make it count.“
your connection to Make-A-wish? i started out helping with the south dakota state dart Tournament. Then i was encouraged to get involved even more as a wish granter.
what made you want to start volunteering for Make-A-wish? i started out not really knowing what Make-a-wish was or what it had to offer. once i started to learn what this great organization was all about i was hooked. i like to volunteer anywhere and any way that i can, because it’s just a great feeling.
how long have you been a volunteer? i think it’s been about nine years i’ve been involved with helping as a volunteer and wish granter.
why do you volunteer for Make-A-wish? i have been so impacted by the people i have come in contact with. i have learned to be a better volunteer and person in all the activities i’ve been involved with. i do enjoy seeing their eyes light up when we talk about their wish.
what is the best part of being involved with Make-A-wish? Meeting the children and their families is so rewarding. Being able to help make wishes come true and all those happy smiles.
tell us about a memorable wish experience: i walk away from each family meeting with so many experiences and memorable stories. i have a story for every wish child that is heartwarming. i remember the first time i went to meet a wish child that was non-communicative and i kept asking myself, How will i know what their wish is if they can’t talk to me? well let me tell you that all changed when i got there. it’s not what they say verbally that counts, it’s everything around them that you pick up on. There was so much said and offered in the family with so few words.
if you could encourage someone who is thinking about volunteering for Make-A-wish, what would you tell them? i encourage friends all the time to get involved. whatever talent you have or don’t think you have will be found by volunteering for Make-a-wish. There are so many ways to help out not only by volunteering at an event or wish granting. Maybe it’s getting your company involved in the different programs that are offered. Maybe attending an event, bringing friends to events, there are so many possibilities. it’s such a rewarding feeling making wishes come true.
what would your one true wish be? My one true wish is to be a good leader in all that i do.

Make-a-wish south dakota received a special gift July 20 when wish Kid rebekah spader, 9, of sioux Falls presented a check for $19,000 at the Make-a-wish golf Tournament. spader, who received a wish in 2010 for a rainbow Play system, has a bucket list and one of her goals is to help make another child’s wish come true. The final amount given was well over $20,000.
after presenting the check, spader had the chance to meet Kinsley, 3, and her family from Miller, the family whose wish she will be helping to make come true. Kinsley’s wish to go to walt disney world will take place over Christmas, a year after Kinsley was diagnosed with cancer.
“it was an emotional evening, but very meaningful for everyone there,” Paul Krueger, president and CEo said. “rebekah and her family define strength and their desire to help another child and family is a testament to their love and concern for others.”
The funds were raised from a concert by Christian artists rachelle Hope and geoff Moore July 11 at the o’gorman Performing arts Center. More than 700 people attended.
