Davenport Neighbours,
2017 is a special year, as Canada celebrates its 150th anniversary. While we know there are a
number of areas where we can do better, Canada is one of the best places in the world to
live.
At the federal level, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and our team is occupied with building
relations with President Donald Trump and his administration. There are many who have
expressed concern about the US travel ban. While the US government has given the
Canadian government assurances that Canadian citizens with valid passports and Permanent
Residents (with PR cards) will not be impacted, the US can decide who it allows to cross its
borders. All sovereign nations, including Canada, have this right. Nonetheless, kindly contact
my office is you are having issues or need my help.
Support for the middle class and those who are working hard to join it continue to be the
core focus of our federal government. With the introduction of the Canada Child Benefit, over
$4.5 billion more dollars is being spent on children and families than the former government.
This is a substantial number, and it shows our support for Canadian families. In addition, over
300,000 children have been lifted out of poverty.
The federal government also continues to focus on immigration and refugees with a record
300,000 new immigrants planned for 2017. An extra focus is being made on settlement of
immigrants and refugees, and I am advocating for government to process the 6,000 pre-2012
legacy refugee cases as soon as possible.
In addition to my parliamentary work on immigration, I am also chairing the Women’s Caucus
Sub-Committee to increase women’s participation in the workforce and to find ways to
support more women entering senior levels in our workplaces.
We are engaging youth in Davenport who are eager to identify issues of concern to them
and serious about tackling them.
Finally, I look forward to connecting with you in the coming days and months – a number of
pop up offices and roundtables have been set up. (See back page.)
My team and I are here to serve you. Please do not hesitate to contact my office and/or to
arrange a meeting if there is some way I can be of
service to you and your family.

Canada—U.S. Relations
In mid-February, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with President Donald Trump in Washington, DC. Both leaders reaffirmed the importance and strength of the relationship between Canada and the US Over 80% of Canada’s trade is with the US, and the federal government is working hard to ensure continued collaboration and Canadian economic prosperity with our largest trading partner.
In Washington, Prime Minister Trudeau reiterated that Canada will continue to uphold its values and continue to welcome immigrants and refugees while not compromising security. Canada was built by immigrants and our future success depends on current and future generations of immigrant populations.
Many Davenport residents expressed concern on a Pre-Clearance Legislation C-23, an agreement that was reached between the previous government and former President Barak Obama
in order to increase speed of movement across the Canada-US border for economic and tourism purposes. This Bill would expand the number of pre-clearance locations, and all actions by US officers at Canadian airports would be subject to Canadian law and limitations. The arrangement is 100% reciprocal. Electoral Reform
The new Minister of Democratic Institutions, the Hon. Karina Gould, announced in February that her new mandate letter does not include changing Canada’s electoral system in 2019. The decision not to change our electoral system was based on extensive outreach with Canadians across the country. No clear consensus was found for an alternative system, and it was clear that broad support is needed for a change of this magnitude.
Many Davenport residents were understandably upset about this broken election promise. Know that the decision was not taken lightly. For my statement on this decision, kindly visit the “News” tab on my website.
This is not the end of the discussion on electoral reform. I encourage all of us to continue to speak about how to improve our democracy and to educate those around us about the options. Please consult my website for information on upcoming roundtables on electoral reform.
Note that Bill C-33 has been introduced to repeal most of the undemocratic changes to the Elections Act made by the previous government. Minister Gould also has been asked to focus on increasing the transparency of political fundraisers, and to look into how the government can protect government institutions from cyberattacks.
M-103
Member of Parliament Iqra Khalid introduced a motion that asks the federal government to condemn all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination, including but not limited to Islamophobia. M-103 seeks to have the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage study how the federal government could reduce or eliminate systemic racism and religious discrimination, collect data on hate crimes, and to conduct needs assessments for impacted communities. There is a lot of misinformation around M-103. The motion does not have anything to do with “freedom of speech”. I will be supporting M-103.

Davenport Youth Council
In 2017, two meetings have already been held
with an energetic group of engaged Davenport
youth who comprise the Davenport Youth
Council.
The members of the Davenport Youth Council
discussed and identified the following issues:
youth engagement, youth homelessness, youth
unemployment, access to education for
immigrant and refugee youth, support for local
businesses and aboriginal issues.
Our first initiative is to work on engaging more
youth in the riding. Stay tuned for more
actions!
Canadian Poverty Reduction Strategy
The Government of Canada is committed to developing a Canadian Poverty Reduction Strategy to reduce poverty and improve the economic well-being of all Canadians so that everyone has a fair chance to succeed.
The Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos has launched a public consultation process so that all approaches to reduce poverty across the country are considered. Canadians are invited to participate in the online consultation, which will run until June 2017. For more information please visit https://www.canada.ca/en/

MOCA
Exciting news! On February 8, the Honourable Melanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, announced funding for the new Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto to be located in Davenport! Funding from the Canada Cultural
Spaces Fund will be used to transform a previous industrial space into a new home for contemporary art. Set to open this fall, MOCA will boast three large-scale exhibitions per year, several permanent collections, a variety of spaces for community members to gather, and an array of education opportunities such as workshops, talks, and screenings.
The opening of this space will mark a new era in MOCA’s growth, as well serve as inspiration for an already vibrant and rich arts and culture community in Davenport.

Isto alterou,
antes era só aos 65 anos.
Ela também continua a ajudar a comunidade—e
a praticar português! Ela divirtiu-se no Amor da
Pátria, na Casa dos Açores, no trigésimo primeiro
aniversário da Casa das Beiras, no trigésimo
quarto aniversário da Casa do Alentejo, na
angariação de fundos para o cancro da mama na
