Getting ready for Year 1Some Early Learning Goals (ELGs) are particularly important because they support a child’s readiness for the Year 1 curriculum.These are the ELGs within the Areas:• Communication & Language • Physical Development • Personal and Social Development • Literacy • Mathematical Development

Literacy - Reading

To attain an ‘Expected’ level the child will:• Read and understand simple

sentences• Use phonic knowledge to decode

regular words and read them • Read some common words• Demonstrate understanding of what

they have read

Support with Reading• Be a role model• Read environmental print• Read & reread favourite books• Support independent reading and

phonics (see guidance on website)• Ask questions about what has been read

– where, who, what, why, how?• Rhyme and alliteration• Volunteer to help children practice

reading

Literacy - Writing

To attain an ‘Expected’ level the child will:• Use their phonic knowledge to write• Write some common words• Write simple sentences which can

be read back• Some words are spelt correctly and

others are phonetically plausible.

Support with Writing

• Encourage children to write for a purpose• Encourage children to use sounds they know

when writing• Be a role model for writing• Encourage all attempts at mark making• Tells stories together - develop imaginative

thinking • Practice spelling common words• Practice handwriting using school script• Volunteer to support us with daily writing

activities

Maths - NumbersTo attain an ‘Expected’ level the child will:• Count reliably 1 to 20, • Order 1-20 • Say 1 more and 1 less• Add and subtract 2 single-digit numbers

(i.e. 8+9)• Count on or back to find the answer• Solve problems, including doubling,

halving and sharing

Support with NumbersLaying the table, shopping, cooking, serving food• How many?• How many more? 1 more, 1 less• We have 6 already – we need 5 more, how can we work that

out?• We had 15 and we used 7 how many are left?• We need double the amount • How many is half each?• How can we share between three?

Track games – i.e. Snakes and Ladders - counting on, counting back

Tallying scores – i.e. number of goals (addition), skittles (subtraction)

Maths – Shape, Space and MeasuresTo attain an ‘Expected’ level the child will use everyday language to talk about:• size • weight• capacity • position • distance • time • Money

Maths – Shape, Space and MeasuresTo attain an ‘Expected’ level the child will:

• Recognise, create and describe patterns

• Use mathematical language to describe shape of object

height, length, distance• Cooking – weight, shape, space, time• Journeys to school – position, direction,

Communication & Language - Speaking

To attain an ‘Expected’ level the child will:• Express himself/herself effectively• aware of listeners’ needs. • Use past, present and future forms • Develop narratives / explanations by

connecting ideas or events

Support with Speaking

• Comment on what you or child is doing

• Offer new vocabulary• Model correct language structures• Ask open questions – Can you tell me about…? How did you know that? I wonder why…

Physical Development – Moving and Handling

To attain an ‘Expected’ level the child will:

• show good control and co-ordination in large and small movements.

• move confidently in a range of ways, safely negotiating space.

• handle equipment and tools effectively, including pencils for writing.

Support with – Moving and Handling

• Letter and number formation • Using scissors• Fine motor skills – playdough, pegs,

tweezers• Large motor – climbing, ball games

Physical Development – Health and Self Care

To attain an ‘Expected’ level the child will:

• know the importance of exercise and a healthy diet

• talk about ways to keep healthy and safe

• manage their own basic hygiene and personal needs successfully, including dressing and going to the toilet independently.

Support with Health and Self CareDaily conversations about: • Sleep routines • Keeping clean - teeth brushing, bathing,

hand washing• Different types of food and why they are

good for you and healthy ways to cook f• Exercise – why we all need to exercise• How to stay safe from harm – people,

places, activities, objects

Understanding the World – People and CommunitiesTo attain an ‘Expected’ level the child will:• Talk about past and present events in their

own lives and in the lives of family members.

• Know that other children don’t always enjoy the same things, and are sensitive to this.

• Talk about similarities and differences between themselves and others, and among families, communities and traditions.

Support with People and Communities• Talk about what is special and unique about your own family

• Talk to your child about differences between your family and others in a positive way

• Share family photos with your child’s class

• Share special food with the class• Come and read a dual language story in class
