Wi-Fi in

After visiting Japan over 6 times

I got lost in

Hiroshima

My phone couldn’t call...

And I couldn’t withdraw money from

an ATM

All because the “free wi-fi” labels in cafes and in apps weren’t clearly explained.

All because the “free wi-fi” labels in cafes and in apps weren’t clearly explained. So I figured it out.

The TOP 5 METHODS for Wi-Fi in Japan

Japan Connected-Free Wi-fi

An app you need to have downloaded and ready. Do it

before you leave.

At the airport (Haneda/Narita) find the Japan wi-fi kiosk

(the tourist information center can tell you where it is)

It will have you scan your passport so have that ready

It will then spit out a little receipt that has a long password valid for 14 days exact (down to the hour)

Once you login with this password, your device saves it. Keep this receipt just in case you switch

devices or need to re-enter it at any time.

You can use this wi-fi in lots of train stations (but not all) and

many other spots as well. If you see a wi-fi sticker in a cafe wall

just try it and see if it works.

It will kick you out after 2 hours of continuous use. It can be slow if a lot of people are using it. And it is

unsecured.

Their website boasts 144,000 covered hotspots. You can

download an offline map which

is a very useful feature.

Travel Japan a wi-fi app

handy to have just in case

It will require you to install a "profile". This is what helps connect your phone to the

network.

This one boasts a network of 200,000 hotspots around Japan

It has also been slow for me before but there is no max limit of

time

Allows connecting to any of the following network names: Wi2,

Wi2_club, Wi2_free, wifi_square, UQ_Wi-Fi,

Wi2premium, & Wi2premium_club

Both Japan Connected-Free Wi-fi and Travel Japan work well. Keep

both ready.

Wi2 300Not free but cheap; purchase

small amounts of wi-fi, new option

They offer a 6-hour pass, 1-day pass, 3-day pass, and 1-week pass

for competitive rates.

Their website is here. And it would connect to the network:

Wi2_premium

StarbucksWhere we can always count on a

hot cappuccino and free wi-fi.

In theory, you can log-in with a social networking account but this

doesn’t always work.

I recommend option 2, registering your e-mail.

Do it now and no issues later.

Option 1: Logging in with social networking accounts

You can access the hotspot using your Facebook, Google or Twitter

account login.

Connect to at_STARBUCKS_Wi2, launch a browser, log-in with your social account. Connect up to 1 hour. Want more time? Log-in

again.

Option 2: Register via email

For those who don’t have social media accounts (or want peace of

mind) e-mail pre-registration is required.

You will need an Internet connection to be able to complete

the registration process. (that’s why you do it ahead)

To register: http://starbucks.wi2.co.jp Enter

your email address and a password of your choice.

Check your inbox. Click the link to confirm in the

registration email that should be in your inbox

This email is valid for 24 hours. Be sure to confirm the email ASAP so you don't have to start over again.

When you log in with a pre-registered email:

Connect to “at_STARBUCKS_Wi2”, open a browser and type in your

log-in ID (your email) and password.

Many devices can be used with the same log-in but not

simultaneously.

McDonaldsSo as of summer 2016,

McDonald's finally has free wi-fi in Japan.

Connect to the network: 00_MCD-FREE-WIFI

Agree to the terms & conditions

Open a web browser in Safari/Chrome/Your choice

You can register with social media accounts/SNS

Or you can register with an email address

However, that email (just like Starbuck's) needs to be registered

*For iPhone users, their website states that after you connect to the network and click agree, the

browser will pop up automatically.

We hope these tips HELP YOU on your next trip TO JAPAN!

See you!
