You Do The Maths...Embedding
Julia Smith
You show me yours and I’ll
show you mine...
Do you teach maths the
way you were taught?
• Multiply 23 x 36
• Find 26% of £350
• Calculate 2/5 + 3/7
• Find the quick wins...arm yourself with one
or two alternative methods
• It’s not how you learned your maths...
Maybe they don’t learn it
like that...
• At 16 students have seen the calculations
• It’s time to say “you don’t learn it like that”
• “Let’s look at a different way...”
• Find one you can use...
Vocational Embedding
Wheel
• Draw a circle in the middle of the paper
• Divide it into the Units you deliver - Pie Chart
• Add another wheel around the inner wheel like a
tyre
• Highlight what maths is in each unit already - be
specific eg adding cash in the salon; measuring
tyre pressures; weighing feed mix
• Add another wheel around the outside
• Add what extra topic areas you could include
