1 LEATHER INTERIOR FOR HOSPITALITY
Highly frequented areas such as hotels and restaurants, seaports
and airports, railway stations, theater and opera halls, cinemas,
museums, conference halls and office equipment must be com-
fortable, yet very robust. The leather interior made by BOX-

1.1 XTREME
XTREME is a hard-wearing leather which can be used on
countless occasions. It features higher values as far as tech-
nical properties, feel, elegance and its natural visual appea-
rance are concerned.
XTREME CHARACTERISTICS AND APPLICATION
XTREME features itself through a higher resistance against
soil, water and insolation. Due to its material thickness of
1.3 – 1.4mm and the strong natural fiber, this special leather
boasts a longer service life. Thanks to its higher abrasion
resistance values resulting in low maintenance, XTREME is
an upholstery leather that is suitable for numerous appli-
cations. XTREME’s emotional quality comes from the ex-
clusive touch of natural leather combined with a smashing
feel, elegance and vibrancy; a feeling only found in natural
products.
To offer architects and designers even more design options,
all 40 collection colors can additionally be supplied in vario-
us structural embossments.

Nearly all exclusive BOXMARK Emotions structural em-
bossments are available in the colors of the Royal leather
collection and offer thousands of options for design diver-
sity. The embossments and color effects allow the designer
and manufacturer to impart outstanding visual accents to
every product and to create maximum individuality. Unique
effects on the embossed surface are obtained by additonal
processing of the surface using special dyes and gloss tech-
niques (catalogue on request).

1.3 KING
King is a special tailor-made leather which can be produ-
ced according to design and project specifications. It can
also be flame retardant-treated according to international
standards.
King is a semi aniline leather, available in a thickness of 1.2
to 2.5 mm and in any desired color and structure from a
quantity of 50 hides and up.
KING is offered in single colors or in a wide variety of effects
such as spot, fat, hand-wiped or antique leather.
It is up to you to decide appearance, grain pattern, color
and technical requirements.
This leather is especially suitable for the upholstery of clear,
cubic furniture and objects.

3.2 EUROPEAN STANDARD EN 1021 – 1 + 2 : 2006
This standard is valid throughout the EU and examines a fabric‘s reaction to a burning cigarette and to a butane flame
(simulated match). It replaces a number of national tests, including DIN 54342 : 1/2 in Germany and BS 5852 : 1990
in the UK.
EN 1021 : Part 1
In Part 1 of the test a lighted cigarette is placed in the test rig and left to smolder along its entire length. After 60
minutes, no smoldering or ignition of the fabric should be observed.
EN 1021 : Part 2
Here a 35mm butane flame is used to simulate a burning match and is applied for 15 seconds, again in the angle
between the test rig base and back. After the flame is removed, no burning of the fabric should occur after 2 minutes
have elapsed.

3.3 GERMAN STANDARD
DIN 4102 Part 1 - Kleinbrenner (B2)
All materials used in buildings in Germany must meet the B2 requirement which is determined using a small flame
test. The fabric specimen is suspended vertically and a 20mm high flame applied for 15 seconds to both the surface
and the edge of the fabric. Reference lines are marked on the specimen, which achieves B2 classification if the tip of
the flame does not reach the reference marks within 20 seconds on any sample. 5 samples are tested with filter paper
placed below each one to assess the production of flaming droplets.
DIN 4102 Parts 15/16 - Brandschacht (B1)
Referred to as the „Brandschacht test“, this - the main test method used in Germany - measures the reaction to fire
and is considered to be the highest flammability standard in the country for upholstery fabrics. The term Brandschacht,
literally „fire shaft“, refers to the testing apparatus itself which consists of a square-shaped vertical housing equipped
with a gas burner. Four fabric samples are held vertically in a supporting frame and subjected to flames for 10 minutes.
At the same time a constant, uniform flow of air is blown into the Brandschacht from below. In evaluating the test,
smoke gas temperature and the mean residual length of the sample are taken into account (residual length is the part
of the specimen which has escaped burning). In order to be classified as B1, the tested fabric must show: 1. A mean
residual length of not less than150mm, with no specimen completely burnt away 2. A mean smoke gas temperature
of less than 200°C

3.4 ITALIAN STANDARD UNI 9175:1987 + A1:1994
Principle:
The combustion of upholstered furniture is evaluated with or without a flame and/or glow. This gives an indication of
the reaction of furniture to fire when exposed to a small ignition source.
Test method:
The leather is first washed and dried and then a test assembly containing the leather to be tested is made. The burner
is placed along the joint of the seat and back of the test chair. A flame is applied to it 3 times, initially for 20s, then
80s and finally for140s. Combustion, flaming and glowing are observed.
The tested material is categorized as class 1IM to 3IM

3.5 RUSSIAN STANDARD
FEDERAL LAW 123-FZ DD. 27 JULY 2008 “TECHNICAL REGULATIONS FOR FIRE SAFETY REQUIREMENTS”.
Fire safety requirements for application of leather materials are set up for the following parameters:
Flammability according to GOST R 50810-95, Flame spread index according to VNPB-03 annex 2
Smoke toxicity according to GOST 12.1.044-89 p.4.20, Smoke density according to GOST 12.1.044-89 p.4.18

.It is hardly flammable according to GOST R 50810-95,
slowly propagates flame according to VNPB-03 annex 2,
has smoke toxicity T2 according to GOST 12.1.044-89 p.4.20
and smoke density D3 according to GOST 12.1.044-89 p.4.18.

3.6 SWITZERLAND STANDARD SWISS SNV 198898
TEST METHOD:
Determination of flammability according to SN 198’89: The test specimen is hung in a test cabinet. A flame is applied to
the bottom edge of test samples for 3s and 15s. The after flame and afterglow time, damaged length and the rate of
flame spread are observed.
RESULT:
Determination of flammability according to SN 198’89: The test material passes the test if it exhibits the following
characteristics: After flame time maximum 5s - damaged length maximum 150mm.
DETERMINATION OF SMOKE DENSITY FOLLOWING VKF:
Based on the measured light absorption the material is classified:
- „smoke level 1“: strong smoke generation
- „smoke level 2“: medium smoke generation
- „smoke level 3“: low smoke generation

3.7 UNITED KINGDOM: BRITISH STANDARD 5852:IS-5
This defines the actual test method, whereby a specially constructed test rig is designed to simulate a chair as descri-
bed in EN 1021.
Of the eight ignition sources, the most frequently used are Ignition Source
0 (cigarette), Ignition Source 1 (butane flame/simulated match) and Ignition
Source 5 (Crib 5). Heat intensity roughly doubles with each move up the
ignition source scale. The requirements for the cigarette and match tests
are the same as those detailed under EN 1021.
The Ignition Source 5 test is more rigorous due to the increased intensity
of heat which is generated from the wooden crib structure. Alcohol is ad-
ded to the small piece of lint at the bottom of the crib which is then placed
on the test rig and ignited within 2 minutes. For a pass to be recorded, all
flaming should cease within 10 minutes.For special applications, King leather also com-plied with the most severe Crib VII.

3.8 USA STANDARD
TB 117 Section E
TB 117 is a mandatory requirement for components of
upholstered furniture and Section E examines a fabric‘s
resistance to a small flame. Fabric mounted at a 45° angle
is exposed to a 5/8“ (1.6cm) butane flame for 1 second.
A pass is achieved if the fabric does not ignite or if the time
of average flame spread is 3.5 seconds or longer for a 5“
length. Virtually all upholstered fabrics pass this test.

TB 133
This is another test for completed items of furniture intended for use in „high risk“ occupancies - including hospitals,
nursing homes, prisons, hotel public areas, etc. In California, it is a mandatory standard for these kinds of occupancy,
although the requirements are relaxed in areas with sprinklers. The City of Boston has also adopted TB 133, but here
it is specified for all non-domestic properties and provision of sprinkler systems is not taken into account. The test,
which is very stringent with rigorous pass/fail criteria, involves the exposure of a piece of upholstered furniture to an
open flame in a standard room.
NFPA 260
This test method provides a means of accurately measuring how resistant upholstered furniture components are
to cigarette ignition, thus assisting in component selection and composite design that will achieve a high level of
resistance and protect lives and property. Official document scope Six laboratory testing procedures are detailed for
evaluating the performance of upholstered furniture components when exposed to smoldering cigarettes under spe-
cified conditions. These components are cover fabric, interior fabric, welt cords, filling/padding components, decking
materials, and barrier materials. Cigarette resistance classifications are also established for these components.

4 PRODUCT SAFETY
Testing and analysis of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons
(PAH) for current requirements of the GS Mark Certification.
On November 20, 2007, the Committee for Technical Work
Equipment and Consumer Products (AtAv) decided to include
the test for PAH as a mandatory requirement for GS Mark certi-
fication. Until now, PAH tests and analyses were conducted volun-
tarily, independent of GS Mark certification. As of April 1st, 2008,
GS Mark certification of products must comply with the PAH limits
as defined in the table below.

The Blue Angel is a German certification for products and services that have environmen-
tally friendly aspects. After the introduction of Germany’s Blue Angel in 1978 as the first
worldwide environmental label, other European and non-European countries followed this
example and introduced their own national and supra-regional environmental labels.The
common goal of these labels is to inform consumers about environmentally friendly pro-
ducts thereby giving global support to product-related environmental protection.
In 1994, some countries cooperated in developing the Global Eco Labeling Network (GEN)
- a non-profit interest group composed of eco-label organizations throughout the world.
10.3 REACH
Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and restriction of Chemicals (REACH) is a European
Union Regulation from 18 December 2006.
In accordance with the REACH regulation, BOXMARK is able to issue declarations of con-
formity for the majority of its products.
REACH addresses the production and use of chemical substances, and their potential im-
pacts on both human health and the environment. Its 849 pages took seven years to be ad-
opted, and it has been described as the most complex legislation in the Union‘s history and
the most important in 20 years. It is the strictest law so far, regulating chemical substances
and will impact industries throughout the world. REACH entered into force in June 2007,
with step-by-step implementation over the next decade.
