When God Doesn't Show Up
If Only…
EveryoneHas an "if only"
What do you thinkWould be different now
If you could changeYour "If Only"?
Mr. Destiny"If only I had hit that ball…"
Easter Story includesIf Onlys
ResurrectionNot of Jesus, though
2 People with an "if only"Just like you and me
Now a man named Lazarus was sick
He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha
They're tight…
This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the
same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped
his feet with her hair
So the sisters sent word to Jesus,
"Lord, the one you love is sick”
Expectation?
When he heard this, Jesus said, "This sickness will not
end in death…
…No, it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it”
…will not end in death …it is for God's glory
Jesus knows the outcomePhysically and Spiritually
If Jesus knows the outcome
What does that say aboutTrusting God?
Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus
Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus
Yet when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days
Messengers: He said it won't end in deathSomething about God's glory
He didn't come with us
"I love you so muchI'm not gonna lift a finger!"
Have you been there?
You call out and God is nowhere to be found?
So…Jesus says the sicknesswill not end in death
So…Jesus says the sicknesswill not end in death
And Lazarus…dies
And Mary and MarthaAre beyond hurt…
Grieving, Let-downFeeling abandoned by Jesus
We have a right to expectThat God will love usGod is love
We have no right to dictateHow his love must be shown
Disillusionment:
Presuming upon God actions Consistent with
Our expectations of love
Then he said to his disciples, "Let us go back to Judea"
"But Rabbi," they said, "a short while ago the Jews tried to stone you, and yet you are going back there?"
Key word, anyone?
"But Rabbi," they said, "a short while ago the Jews tried to stone you, and yet you are going back there?"
Jesus is in controlIt's not happeningUntil he's ready for it
That's why we trust him
Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours of
daylight? A man who walks by day will not stumble, for he
sees by this world's light…
It is when he walks by night that he stumbles, for he has
no light"
Jesus has the timetableThe light stays litUntil Jesus says different
After he had said this, he went on to tell them,
"Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going
there to wake him up”
His disciples replied, "Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better"
Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.
So then he told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead, and
for your sake I am glad I was not there,
so that you may believe. But let us go to him"
God redeemsEven that which he
Did not cause
…that God's son might be glorified…
…so that you may believe…
God is glorified when we believe
"Lord, help me seebeyond the what I can see
with my eyes
To the One I can trust with my heart"
“For your sake I’m glad I was not there…”
Lazarus experienced deathYet Jesus will redeem it for his glory and the disciples' blessing
“Lord, how can you use my situation for your glory
and others’ benefit?”
They tried to kill you, Jesus!
Thomas ain't doubting
Then Thomas (called Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples,
"Let us also go, that we may die with him”
On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days…
…When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to
meet him, but Mary stayed at home
"Lord," Martha said to Jesus, "if you had been here, my brother would not have died"
Is she right?
Is she right?
Does it change anything?
We all have "If Onlys"
"If onlys" change nothing
Cause blame and bitterness andCreate barriers to living now
“If onlys”:- Tied to the past, focused backward- Regret and guilt- Or accusation and anger - Live in the unreality of what might
have been
“Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, "if you had been here,
my brother would not have died”
But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask"
"Even nows" change everything
Because they are full of faithLooking forward, not backward
"Even nows" - Look to the Future- Kill blame and shame- Include acceptance/forgiveness- Are God-centered- Involve faith
“Even nows”=room to grow- “What can I learn from it?” - “What can I do differently in the
future?”- “How can my experiences help others?”
Am I willing to give up My "If Onlys"
For God’s "Even now"?
But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask"
Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again"
Martha answered, "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day"
“I believe in the right stuff”
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will
live, even though he dies;
…and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"
"Don't believe the right stuffBelieve in the right Person"
Our faith isn't dead doctrineAnd ritualistic religionIt's living faith in a risen King
Don't believe in a truthAnd miss The Truth
"Yes, Lord," she told him, "I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world"
Martha moves from believingA religious teaching
To real faith Jesus
The point at which faith Becomes real is When it is founded
On Jesus alone
Mary shows up and says…
"Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died”
Jesus…came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance
"Take away the stone," he said.
"But, Lord,"said Martha, the sister of the dead man,
"by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days"
Then Jesus said,
"Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would seethe glory of God?"
So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said…
"Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me"
When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice,
"Lazarus, come out!"
The dead man came out,his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face
Jesus said to them,
"Take off the grave clothesand let him go"
- John 11
"If only's" become"Even now"
Why did you…?Becomes I can trust you
We don't tell JesusWhat he should've done
When he knows
What he's yet to doEven now
"If onlys" are periods That can define us
"Even nows" are commas That can set us free
Jesus is aliveAnd he's not done
With you yet
What could he doIn your life
If you let go of the past And trusted him for today?
Pray
