6 What’s Up For Kids May/June 2013
1. Regularly, update the family calendar with appointments, special occasions, sports and school activities.
2. Handle paperwork, email and postal mail ASAP. Discard junk, etc. Pay bills 1-2 times a month or auto pay to save time. Designate location for mail to be placed and dealt with daily.
3. Spend a few minutes each evening planning the next day's activities; appoint-ments, errands, sports, classes, etc.
4. Create a computer printed grocery list. Post it for all to see. Have family mem-bers circle items as needed. Shop weekly to save time, energy and money! Leave the kids at home when possible when shopping, to shop faster and save money!
5. Turn overwhelming household projects into smaller tasks. Start with purging of a drawer or two. Get into the habit of donating unwanted items to charities. Weekly ,for one hour, each person uses a grocery bag to place unwanted items for donation or discard. When a new item comes in…one goes out!
6. Help everyone to become responsible family members. Teach all to sort laun-dry, set & clear the table, help cook when possible, tend to the animals, vacuum a room, and take out the trash and recycle.
7. Placing counter-top items into a basket or container makes for simple clean up of an area. Use plastic shoeboxes baskets and recyclable containers for sorting items in drawers and cabinets.
8. Plan a weekly dinner menu before grocery shopping to prepare for healthier eating, eliminating last minute take out and saving money. Cook several meals one day to prep and freeze for future meals.
9. Make time to relax and enjoy your new and more peaceful life with a movie or game.
10. Have fun!

Courteous & CoolCourteous & CoolCourteous & Cool Bragging Rights
By Kari Doody Nothing is more uncomfortable than having to listen to a parent that brags about their child consistently. We all have those friends and most of us are so patient that we usually sit there and listen as we cringe our teeth. Somehow parents who brag about their children have no idea how annoy-ing it can be. Parents love to talk about their kids and their accomplish-ments but there is a fine line of when a person brags too much. The ques-tion is, how do we politely get out of a conversation with someone who brags too much? Well, here are some options: Find a break in the conversation and try to change the topic. “ That is fantastic Sue, by the way are you going to the school fundraiser next week?” That way you avoid comparing your child, and you verbalize politely that you are ready to talk about something else. Look for a way out. “Hey Sue, I’d love to continue this conversation with you at another time, but I have to go talk to the teacher about tomorrows homework assignment. See you later.” Use humor as a way out. “Wow Sue, sounds like Joey is ready to try out for the major leagues? Lets call the scouts!” A touch of lightheartedness could easily make the bragger realize what they are doing and turn them onto another topic. No matter which approach you take remember to never one up the bragger. This will definitely feed their need to continue bragging. More importantly, remember to always focus on your children as people rather than their lat-est accomplishments. Kari Doody is Founder of the Courteous and Cool Etiquette School. After having three children and sharing stories with other mom’s, she realized that many role models that our children look up to were in the news – and not in a good way. We aren’t born with good manners, they need to be culti-vated at a young age and reinforced throughout young adulthood. Whatev-er level your child is at, she can help them improve their skills and confi-dence – and they can have fun doing it with my age appropriate games and activities. 22 What’s Up For Kids May/June 2013
By Michael Malgeri One of my favorite movies is "The Incredibles," an animated film about a family of superheroes in hiding that's just as entertaining for adults as it is for kids. Mr. Incredible is the strongest man in the world and his wife, Elas-tigirl, is one flexible lady. Together they take on all manner of mayhem while maintaining unparalleled devotion to truth, justice, family and most of all, each other. Last week, I had the pleasure of witnessing the heroics of REAL LIFE su-pers. Together over 65 years, my Mom and Dad have faced their share of mayhem, including the four Malgeri "kids," now nearly all over 50. To make a long story short, last Wednesday at 1am, they made their way to a Palm
Springs emergency room, only to discover my Dad was suffering from congestive heart failure. On Thursday morning he summoned my Mom and me, both of us rushing to his bedside fearing the worst. His yearlong bout with lym-phoma, and the after effects of intense chemo treatments appeared to be taking its toll. I was frightened, I was worried,
and I was dead wrong. You see, two days later, the three of us were working out in the health spa, Dad on the rowing machine, Mom on the recumbent bicycle. The day after that, with me back in Los Angeles, they took in a night at the local casino, shortly after monitoring his blood pressure as instructed by the discharge nurse. I have to say, when it comes to fulfilling marriage vows, my parents have failed miserably. For them there is no "worse" only "better," they will NEVER part and after what I saw last weekend, I'm not certain there will ever be death. They are, "The Indomitables." Editor’s Note: Along with “On Dad’s Watch” Michael has also writtten a series of books he calls “Bedtime Stories about Capitalism,” which teaches kids about honest profit making. A Mom on a Mission
While attending a business event in March, I was intro-duced to Melissa Lanz, Founder of The Fresh 20! She was on stage sharing her story and I was so impressed and inspired while listening that I immediately pulled out my iPad and looked up her site to see what it was all about. Melissa started her company in April 2010 with $2500 and the belief that she could carve out a better life. She was earning good money in a corporate job but feeling dissatisfied with her career and the amount of time away from what really mattered to her, her family. She had the consistent paycheck but not the sense of fulfillment. The Fresh 20 started out of a need she had for herself, to improve her family food culture and reduce the amount of processed food. She was tired of wasting money on takeout and farmers market finds that turned into science projects by the end of the week because she didn’t have a plan.
When I asked her how she defines SUCCESS, Melissa responded “For me, happiness is the ultimate measure of success. It’s never the money; it’s the flexibility and freedom to make choices for myself and my family that really provide a sense of accomplishment. I never think about the money. I think about what I can do with the money. Success is the ability to take my children on an extended learning va-cation, travel for more than a long weekend, and give back to worthy causes.“
Here’s how it works… thefresh20.com is a meal planning site – and so much more. The weekly meal plans include you purchasing 20 fresh, local and organic (when possible) ingredients. Nothing is processed or frozen, making sure everything is preservative free. They give you a step by step guide to prep the entire week’s meals, about an hour at the begin-ning of the week to make it easier on busy school and work nights. Each complete meal takes less then 30 minutes to prepare and features a simple recipe the whole family can create together! For as little as $5 per month, you have access to simple, easy, fresh, healthy meal plans for your family!! Melissa has an empowering, inspirational story - one of
great success founded on her own needs. She is the
cover story on our other magazine, Today’s Innovative
Woman (www.TodaysInnovativeWoman.com) Her new
cookbook has made it’s debut! Learn more about
Melissa, her new cookbook and her company at

Cookin’ Corner Arugula and Ricotta Bruschetta
By Phoebe Schilla Last night we had a wonderful batch of spicy Arugula from our tiny garden that was ready to be picked. It’s my husband’s garden spot—not mine. (I do the cooking and he Pete is the gardener and bartender. Pretty nice, huh?) He keeps us well stocked with fresh herbs and tender greens. I love having fresh herbs and greens available. Not only is it more economical and fresher than anything you can find at the grocery store, it’s a great way to get the kids involved with gardening, tasting and eating. Although arugu-la is fantastic in salads, I love using it in sandwiches and as a topping for bruschetta and even pizza. I seasoned the ricotta with a smidge of grated garlic and scented it with lemon zest. The lemon-y, creamy ricotta was a great foil for the spicy arugula. This is a great way to start a meal or to have as a snack. You could pair this with a variety of wines, ranging from a very dry sauvignon blanc to a rich chardonnay. Arugula and Ricotta Bruschetta A handful of arugula, washed and trimmed 1-2 Tbsp. Olive Oil 2 tsp Champagne or White wine vinegar Salt and pepper to taste 1/3 cup of whole milk ricotta (I like Calabro) 1 tsp. of lemon zest ½ small clove of garlic, grated 2 tsp. lemon juice (optional, if you want a more tangy flavor) Salt and pepper to taste Grilled or toasted bread slices Combine the ricotta, garlic, lemon zest, and juice if you are using. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Set aside. Toss the Arugula with the olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper to taste. To assemble: Put a dollop of ricotta centered on your bread and top with the Arugula. Enjoy—It’s simple and delicious. Editor’s Note: Chef Phoebe loved cooking from an early age growing up outside of Portland, Maine. Her mother and aunt were accomplished self-taught cooks who welcomed curious Phoebe into their kitchens. From tapping her own maple syrup from trees in the yard to baking homemade bread, Phoebe learned at an early age about the delicious benefits of whole, natural, seasonal foods. Phoebe lives in San Francisco with her husband and their daughter. In her spare time she enjoys read-ing cookbooks, traveling, studying yoga practices and, of course, learning about all the latest culinary happenings from around the globe. Family Friendly Travel London—A City Full of HIstory
We recently enjoyed a family vacation to the beautiful city of London. I have to say that the history, tradi-tions and culture are amazing and great for a family that enjoys a trip rich in history and adventure. Buck-ingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Big Ben, and the Tower Bridge are just some of the many sites to see. Since hosting the Olympics, and having the Queens Jubilee, the city is perfectly poised to receive visitors from around the world. There are many tours availa-ble to get your bearings initially. We enjoyed the Big Red Bus tour that gave us a general overview of the
city. They also have many other public transportation options with “the tube,” buses and for a fun experience - the black taxicabs, which seat up to five people. There are affordable family packages to this city with activities and tours included in one price. We can also custom make a tour designed just for your family in mind. A short train ride away is England’s very own LEGO-LAND and Warner Brothers Harry Potter theme park (similar to the park in Universal Studies Orlando). London a city filled with history and tradition, something we can all benefit from these days. To plan your London holiday, please call me at Travel-store! Note from the Publisher: I enjoyed a trip to London with my daughter back in Octo-ber and it was fabulous! We only had 2 days but the Big Red Bus took us to all the important sights around town. Our favorites were the London Tower and the Crown Jewels, the London Eye and we sent to a service at Westminster Abbey! Incredible, memorable trip! Photos are of me and my oldest daughter!
