What Happens During a Hypnotic Trance?

The most basic level of trance is simply closing

the eyes. This is not considered to be a very

deep level of trance at all and has a score of zero.

They aren’t really in a trance at all and aren’t

really responding “involuntarily” to the

suggestions implanted by a stage hypnotist.

All they’re really doing is giving themselves the

excuse to act like a fool in public and do things they would never normally do

otherwise.

The first real level of hypnotic trance is moving

or lowering the hand in response to cues from the therapist guiding the client

through the stages of trance.

According to one susceptibility scale, this

level is preceded by physical signs of drowsiness

– swaying and the like.

However, these can only be seen if the subject is in the right starting position – it’s hard to sway if you’re lying

down on a couch.

The next level is either gauged by the inability to

move one arm or the patient moving his/her

hands apart in response to cues from the therapist.

After these early levels (with scores of 1 or 2) come the

deeper ones where the mind influences the

experiences of the body.

In a medium-deep trance, the subject experiences

hallucinations in response to cues from the therapist – they

can perceive that a fly or a mosquito is in the room near

them, and their brain produces the auditory signals telling them that the insect is

buzzing nearby.

After the hallucination stage comes the level of

trance where age regression is possible, where the brain

accesses memory and relives it.

A hypnotherapist can test if the subject is at the

threshold of the deepest levels of trance when he or she passes the smell test.

A strong-smelling substance is held under the nose, but

if the trance is deep enough, the subject cannot

smell it.

Another threshold test at this level of trance is the

voice hallucination – the subject hears disembodied voices speaking to him or

her.

Again, the similarity between this hallucination

and the experiences of yogis and shamans during

self-induced trance is striking.

In the deepest levels of trance – levels that carry a

score of 11 or 12 – the patient responds to post-

hypnotic suggestions.

This means that their behaviour will be affected when they come out of the

trance.

At the very deepest level of hypnosis of all, the client

experiences amnesia – he or she cannot remember

details of the trance or that they have even entered the

trance state.

This deepest level is the stuff that sci-fi thrillers often

play around with, but this state cannot be reached against your will and a

conscious decision on the part of the client to enter the trance and go deep.

There are a lot of health, wellness and mental

benefits of Hypnosis that is why more and more people are recognizing it as a great

treatment alternative.
