Student visa

EU citizens and citizens of Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Korea and USA do not need a visa to study in Germany.

Students from other countries will need to apply for a student visa from the respective German mission in their country (or nearest location) before traveling.

Visa processing can take up to 3 months – apply early!A list of missions on the Lancaster Leipzig website.

Visa application overview1. Check the website of your nearest consulate for detailed instructions

1. Book a visa appointment onlineDo not delay - in some countries the appointments need to be booked several months in advance!

1. Prepare the required documents and submit them at the time of appointment

4. You will receive an entry visa (valid 3 months) – upon arrival apply for student residence permit with the local authorities.

Most common documents: offer letter from the University, evidence of sufficient financial means, health insurance, academic and language qualifications, motivation letter

Financial evidence

Students will be expected to demonstrate funds of 10,236 EUR for one year (covering living costs).

Most international students use a blocked account to fund their studies in Germany. The money they transfer to a blocked account cannot be accessed until they enter the country.

Many students choose to use a Fintiba/Xpatrio/Coracle, a private provider who allows you to set up both your health insurance and blocked account from your home country.
