Classroom Goal• I want to create a positive, hands-on

Common Core California Standards• 2014-2015 is Leitch’s first year of full implementation• Provides a coherent, rigorous, relevant curriculum to

prepare students for college and career• Rigor = deeper understanding not increased work or

difficulty• CCCS is the depth of understanding, brought about

through more project-based learning and an increased focus on communication and collaboration.

How can you help your child become a better reader?

What is Math Expressions?

• Math Expressions is a comprehensive Kindergarten – Grade 5 mathematics curriculum that offers new ways to teach and learn mathematics. It combines the most powerful elements of standards-based instruction with the best of traditional approaches.

• Math Expressions uses objects, drawings, conceptual language, and real-world situations to help students build mathematical ideals that make sense to them.

Components of Math Expressions

• Quick Practice: 5-min activity intended on activating prior-knowledge at the beginning of the lesson

• Daily Routines: 10 daily minute routines which focus on place value and are led by Student Leaders

• Drawn Models: Moves students from physical manipulatives (concrete) to conceptual drawings (abstract) which helps children explain their thinking and helps teachers gain insight to students’ understanding

• Language Development: Students are encouraged to write their own problems and describe their problem-solving strategies in writing through journal prompts

• Student Leaders: Encourages participation & helps with children gain independence

• Math Talk: As children communicate about math, they gain insights into their thinking and others. They reflect on their learning and organize and consolidate their thinking about math.

• Library: Thursdays 8:30-9:00 am. Students may check out 2 books per week Books due Wednesdays

• Computers: On Wednesdays Ms. Comendant will teach computers in the computer lab.

• Our P.E. Days will be on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Homework Policy

• 40-120 minutes of homework per week (10-30 minutes a day).

• Passed out Fridays and returned Fridays• 4 night period• Students completed independently• Designed for average child• Check over your child’s packet and initial each page

before turning it in• I check for initials and completion ONLY
