Joseph, AType Of Jesus

I. Our words about Joseph:

A. CHOICES

B. FLEE

C. SERVE

D. LOVE

E. FORGIVE

F. TYPE

II. Definition of a type:

A. A figure, representation, or symbol of something to come, as an event in the Old Testament foreshadows another in the New Testament.

B. Types generally find their fulfillment in the person and ministry of Christ, but they sometimes relate to God the Father, His people, or some other reality. From the Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary.

C. An excellent example is found in Numbers 21:8-9 where Moses lifted up the snake on a pole and those who looked on it lived. In John 3:14-15 Jesus said, “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.” NIV

III. Joseph as a type of Jesus:

A. Both Jesus and Joseph were loved by their fathers.

John 15:9 and Genesis 37:3

B. Both Jesus and Joseph were rejected by their brothers.

John 7:5 and Genesis 37

C. Joseph’s brothers developed a progressive hatred of Joseph in Genesis 37:4, 5, 8 and 11. The Gospels give the same impression concerning the Jews and Jesus. Matthew 3:10

D. Both Jesus and Joseph were tempted and both did not sin. Hebrews 4:15 and Genesis 39:9. E. Both Joseph and Jesus were unjustly convicted. Joseph was unjustly charged with trying to rape Potiphar's wife.

Genesis 39:1-20 and Luke 23:1-22

F. Both were unjustly sold.

Genesis 37:28 and

Matthew 26:15.

G. Both suffered; Joseph in prison and Jesus on the cross.

Genesis 39 and Luke 23:32-56

H. Joseph lost his garment before he went into the pit and before he went to prison. The soldiers took Jesus’ robe. Genesis 39:13 and John 19:23-24

I. Both delivered men from death. Luke 24 and Genesis 50:19-20

J. Both were later crowned with glory and honor. Genesis 41:39-45 and

Hebrews 2:9
