Everyyear,theInternationalSchoolforAdvancedStudies(SISSA)inTriestewelcomesnewstudents.Thisyear,alongwithintroducingtheDirector,fellowstudents,andscientists,therewillbeseveralawardsgiven(includingtheBassoliPrizeforScienceCommunication)andthelectiomagistralisonchaosbyLaureSaint-Raymond,aFrenchmathematician.

WelcomeDayisaspecialoccasionatSISSAeachyear:itisamomentforgreetingstudentsatthebeginningoftheiracademicpathattheSchoolandwelcomingthemwithstoriessharedbyPhDcandidatesandinstructorsabouttheirexperiences.Itisalsoatimetoawardandrecognizestudents,teachersandstaff(theBassoliprize,dedicatedtothememoryofJournalistandlong-timeinstructorinthe“FrancoPrattico”MasterinScienceCommunicationsprogramatSISSAwillalsobeawarded).Theeventtraditionallyhostsadistinguishedscientistaswell.Thisyear’sdistinguishedguestisLaureSaint-Raymond,theinternationallyrenownedandinfluentialFrenchmathematician,whowillbespeakingabout“Disorder.”ThedaywillbeginwithagreetingbyrecentlyappointedSISSADirector,StefanoRuffo,andremarksbylocalauthorities.ThesewillbefollowedbyapresentationofSISSAforSchools,theprogramwhereSISSAopensitsdoorseachweekforyoungvisitors.“Older”studentsandpostdocswillthentellnewstudentsabouttheirexperiences.SISSAprofessorswillprovideinformationabouteducationalandresearchactivities.Theawardsceremonywillbeginat11.00(BestPhDandMaster’sthesis,“SpecialStudent”prize,andstaffawardsmedals)TheBassoliPrize

DuringtheWelcomeDayceremony,the2015BassoliPrizewillbeawardedtoPaolaVaccaraforherproject“VoicesonEbola,”acollectionofinterviewswithpeopleinvolvedinthehealthemergencythatbrokeoutlastyearinseveralAfricancountries.TheBassoliprizeawardsthree-thousandeurosforthebestprojectfeaturinginterviewsandoralhistoriesinthefieldofscience.TheprizewasestablishedbySISSAandtheNationalInstituteofNuclearPhysics(INFN)andisdedicatedtothememoryofRomeoBassoli,scientificjournalistwhopassedawayin2013.“DisorderisalmostSure”withLaureSaint-Raymond

Thecelebrationwillconcludewiththisyear’slectiomagistralis,whichwillbegivenbyFrenchmathematician,LaureSaint-Raymond.Saint-Raymondisanexpertonpartialdifferentialequations;hertalkonchaosandirreversibilityatSISSAisentitled“Disorderisalmostsure.”ThelecturewillbegiveninEnglishandisopentothepublic.ItwillbeprecededbyaspeechoftheDirector,StefanoRuffo.

Atjustfortyyearsofage,Saint-Raymondistherecipientofmanyprestigiousawards.In2002(age27)shewasnamedProfessoratthePierre-and-Marie-CurieUniversityinParisandisnowViceDirectoroftheDepartmentofMathematicsattheÉcolenormalesupérieureinParis.SheisalsoaProfessoratHarvardUniversity.SaintRaymondisalsomemberoftheFrenchAcademyofSciences.In2008shereceivedanawardfromtheEuropeanMathematicalSociety.PROGRAM:
