Welcome Back!!

Wednesday/Thursday 10/14-10/15/2015

Agenda: 3G Activity Quarter 1 Review

Activity: Microscope Review and Lab

Homework: No Homework Tonight

Give, Get & Given3G Review Activity

1. Write down any term (in the “Given” column) that you do NOT already have.

Scientific Method

Independent Variable

Dependent Variable

Biochemistry

Eukaryotic cell

Prokaryotic Cell Nucleus Organelles

Claim Macromolecule Homeostasis Cell theory

2. You will pick 1 word from EACH of the 3G columns.

3. You may NOT have the same words as anyone else at your table.

4. On the back of your 3G sheet, write the words, its definition and explain how each of the terms are interconnected.

5. Explain in pictures how the terms are connected. The drawing must be creative and colorful.

6. 3G Review Activity is worth 15 points

Give, Get & Given 3G Activity

Microscope Lab!! Today we will be looking at the letter “e” and your very own cheek cells while practicing how to

use a microscope

First, we need to review the components and important features of microscopes

http://www.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/f4f6097a-807f-4488-b874-0bae0d8446c8/microscope-activity/en/

After we have mastered how to use a microscope, we will be looking at different species of plants and their cells!

Strand 4: Life Science

Concept 1: The Cell

PO3: Explain the importance of water to cells.

PO4: Analyze mechanisms of transport of materials (e.g., water, ions, macromolecules) into and out of cells:

-Passive transport

-Active transport

Agenda: Notes on Diffusion

Activity: Cellular Membrane Activity

Homework: No Homework Tonight

When talking about cells, explain what a “membrane” is.

A cell membrane is a barrier around the cell that allows things to come in and out of the cell

Functions of Membranes

1. Protects cell

2. Separates the cell from the environment

3. Maintain ion concentrations of various substances

4. Selectively permeable - allows some molecules in, others are kept out

Selectively Permeable: ExamplesIn your notes, explain in your own words

what it means to be selectively permeable.

What are 3 examples of selectively permeable barriers in your everyday life?

Share your examples

Phospholipid Bilayer

The cell membrane is made of a phospholipid bilayer.

Phospho = phosphate (an element)Lipid = FATBi = TWOLayer = stacked

Question

Do lipids like to be in water? How do you know?HINT: Do oil and water mix?

Lipids (FATS) do NOT like water

Lipids have a PHOBIA of water

Parts of the Phospholipid BilayerHydrophilic = loves water

THINK!! A person who is a “bibliophile” LOVES books!!

Hydrophobic = hates waterTHINK!! A person who is “arachnophobic” HATES spiders!!

Other Stuff in the Cell Membrane!• The cell membrane has a lot of stuff in it besides

phospholipids. Some other stuff in the cell membrane are PROTEIN CHANNELS, RECEPTOR MOLECULES, AND CHOLESTEROL.

Cell Membrane FoldableDraw and label picture of the

List the functions of the cell membrane
