Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,
Helping keep children safe through new screening laws Stronger, more effective and transparent screening laws for people working or volunteering with children have been introduced in South Australia. The new screening laws were recommended as part of federal and South Australian royal commissions, to help keep children safe in our communities. The new laws mean that from 1 July 2019 everyone working or volunteering with children must have a valid child-related check. Also changing from 1 July 2019 is the state’s current system for child-related employment screenings, which will be replaced with a Working With Children Check (WWCC). This new check is coming in to better protect your children and make sure that people working or volunteering with children are suitable. It does this through a monitored and more robust assessment of a person’s eligibility to work or volunteer with children. Because the check is monitored, immediate action can be taken if a person is charged with a concerning offence. The new check covers a person’s national criminal history including all spent convictions, pending and non-conviction charges, and other disciplinary and child protection information. A WWCC is valid for five years and is portable across roles and organisations throughout South Australia. Current, valid child-related employment screening checks done by DHS/DCSI will be recognised as a WWCC until they expire. There is also a 12 month transition period for anyone with a National Police Certificate assessed by their organisation, with the certificate valid till 1 July 2020. For most people, this means they don’t need to do anything to be ready for the new law starting on 1 July 2019. For more information about the new check visit the DHS website.
Netball Carnival
On May 31st, a group of year 6/7 students attended the Interschool Netball Carnival. Although it was a freezing day, the Nicolson teams heated up the court with their impressive netball skills! Throughout the day the girls showed great enthusiasm and team spirit. In the 7th game of the day the two Nicolson teams had a play off, which was a lot of fun to be a part of.
It was great to see the girls engage in some friendly competition. Overall, our teams came 5th and 7th and scored highly for their positive attitude! It was a great day to be a part of and the girls should be very proud of their efforts.
Point Lowly Camps In Week 5 the students and teachers in Room 17, 18, 19 and 20 attended camp at Point Lowly. During their stay the students explored the seaside environment, partook in team building activities and managed to look after themselves without the support of family. Much fun was had by all and it was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to get to know each other better in a relaxed
setting. Pam Peters

Aboriginal Education News Every Wednesday this term Room's 6 and 7 have been spending lesson time in the Aboriginal Education room with Mrs Cowan and Mrs Sutton. In Week 6 students had to use their problem solving skills while they designed and constructed their own traditional shelters. Students were only able to use string, match sticks, pop sticks and a small amount of clay. Students were very imaginative and the shelters looked fantastic.
Premiers Be Active Challenge
This week the students have begun participating in the Premiers Be Active Challenge. This challenge requires students to do 60 minutes of physical activity every day for at least 5 days each week for 10 weeks. During the school day, students are provided with a variety of physical activities including, Daily PA, Physical Education lessons and lunch play times. Each time students participate in such activities they will be asked to record it in their Activity Log. To assist your child in completing their goal, please record any physical activities your child participates in outside of school hours and the time in which they spend on these activities in your child’s diary/communication book. For example, if your child rides their bike or jumps on the trampoline for 10 minutes, make a note of this. This enables your child to keep an accurate log of their activity.
Any further questions concerning the Premiers Be Active Challenge, please do not hesitate to ask.
