Apalachee Tapestry MagnetSchool of the Arts presented “AStarry Night” on Nov. 19 at the

Lincoln High School auditorium. Theprogram featured more than 130ATMSA elementary arts studentsand it highlighted all of the school’sperforming arts groups includingdance, band, strings, chorus, guitarand vibrations. The fifth-grade trum-peters were eager to share somethoughts about their music training.

Khamani Meadows said that heenjoys playing music because “youcan show off how much you care forband and how hard you’ve practiced.Learning music in school teaches usto work as a team and we keep push-ing ourselves.” Corey Johnson said “Ihave a feeling inside when I play mytrumpet. I control my breath and mytone to make my music.” JamariJohnson added that “playing an in-strument makes me feel like I can dosomething great.”

The production was a celebrationof arts students, arts teachers, andarts education. These students willforever carry the skills they’re learn-ing at ATMSA as well as an apprecia-tion for the arts.

ATMSA was established in 1999 asLeon County’s first elementary mag-net school. Since then, ATMSA hasexcelled in enhancing student educa-

tion through artistic emphasis. Theschool-wide program incorporatesthe arts into standardized state-ap-proved core curricula. The goal ofthe educators and staff at ATMSA isto help students develop a passion forlearning while nurturing their exist-ing creativity. ATMSA holds the Flor-ida Arts Achievement Model Schooldesignation, an honor that allowsthem to share best practices withother Florida schools.

with educators moderating theclasses and to observe students’interactions with the course-work.

“Teaching is my passion,”Goutoufas said. “These classesare about increasing access tolanguage, about making deafpeople feel more included.”

In the computer lab at God-by, students engage in face toface exercises with classmates,complete “video collaborations”– they record themselves in fiveseparate videos for every les-son to demonstrate their graspof new material – and can settheir own pace through onlineinstruction.

Goutoufas’ visit earlier thismonth also lends students in-sight about what it is like to bedeaf or hard of hearing, too. JoeLabrador, Godby teacher andfootball coach who oversees theASL program there, said thatfor most students, this was thefirst time they met someonedeaf or hard of hearing. It wasan “eye-opening experience,” hesaid.

Many students quickly adaptto sign language, finding itseemingly intuitive.

“It’s really fun. You catch onreally quickly once you get usedto it,” said Canice Glenn, a sen-ior at Godby. “I would definitelyencourage other students totake sign language. There aremore deaf people and it is im-portant to better communicatewith them.”

Kinesthetic learners, whomay not perform well in tradi-tional foreign language classes,Labrador explained, can excelin ASL – boosting their gradepoint averages while fulfillingneeded language credits.

“It’s an active class,” saidGodby senior Cedric Wood, a“conversational” signer work-ing on his fluency, “and I re-member signing because I amdoing it with my hands.

“I also like how (ASL) gaveme a different outlook,” he said.“I got to see another perspec-tive.”
