Unit 1 - History of Contemporary MediaObjectives:

● Students will study the history of Contemporary Media, dating back to 2000.

● Students will develop an understanding of the paths and changes in media in

the past 20 years.

● Students will learn about key figures in the development of digital media,

social media, and technology.

Lesson:

● Students will watch the 1 hour CNN program, “The i Decade”

○ The program is divided into 5 parts

■ Students will have a worksheet to fill out as they watch the program.

■ At the end of each section Ms. Roberts will lead a group discussion using

this worksheet as a guideline.

○ This will take 3 class periods to complete.

● By the end of “The i Decade” video, students should have completed their worksheet.

○ Worksheet is turned in for a daily grade.

○ Participation in the discussion and engagement in the worksheet preparation

will be evaluated for daily activity grades.

Evaluation:

● An exam on “The i Decade” will conclude the unit.

○ Major grade.

PhotojournalismLesson Planning for Journalism

1st 6 weeks

Unit 2 - Beginning the study of PhotojournalismObjectives:

★ Students will learn the answer for ‘what is photojournalism?’

★ Students will learn the basic functions of a Canon DSLR camera.

★ Students will learn a variety of photographic techniques.

★ Students will develop an eye for photos that can be used for publication.

Lesson 1:

● Camera Function

○ How the camera works slide presentation.

■ Focal Points:

● Participants will follow along with their Google Drive, answering

questions along the way.

● Each student learn the procedure for checking out a camera for

assignment use.

● ALL STUDENTS ARE TO HAVE THEIR OWN SD CARDS BY

SEPTEMBER 11th.

■ Class will have a group orientation on the basic functions of the camera.

○ Activity

■ During 2 class periods, students will use class time to take a variety of

images. At least 4.

■ Upload images to their Desktop folder for the class

■ Edit the images in Windows Photo Editor.

● Minor Grade

Lesson 2:

● Photography techniques and concepts

○ What makes a good picture? What makes a bad one? Knowing both is

important.

■ Focal Points:

● Students will learn how to recognize and photograph using the

following concepts:

○ Angles

○ Filling the Frame

○ Bird’s Eye View

○ Worm’s Eye View

■ Activity:

● Students will take a variety of images for practice, just to get used

to the camera.

● Once they are confident in how the camera works for them,

students will begin to organize a focus to a project.

○ Taking a master image, then taking a picture of the same

object or place that utilizes each of the concepts.

● Upload images to computer.

● Create a Google slide presentation with images on individual

slides, each slide containing the image and a description of the

concept utilized in the frame.

○ Major Grade - due. September 21.

Lesson 3:

● Expanding Photography Concepts

○ How to take interesting pictures.

■ Focal points:

● Exploring the use of the following concepts to create storytelling

images:

○ Dominating foreground, contributing background

○ Dominating background, contributing foreground

○ Depth of Field

○ Emotion

○ Rule of Thirds

■ Activity:

● Going out as a group and shooting the same objects and scenes

utilizing the techniques described.

● Then separating and shooting independently, or with a partner.

○ Paying close attention to:

■ Camera function

■ Camera focus and stillness

■ Sharp, clear images

■ Taking pictures that create a story.

○ Working in automatic function on the camera.

○ Working with staged and candid shots.

■ Select and edit

■ Create a slideshow of your work

■ Present slideshow

● Minor grade - daily activity

● Major grade - final presentation
